PLAYERS: Lindsey Vonn

Via The Last Angry Fan:

Lindsey Vonn had surgery this past Sunday to repair her torn right ACL and MCL following a horrific crash that came in a Super-G race in Austria the week before. Doctors are confident that Vonn, an Olympic gold medal winner at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, should make a full recovery with aggressive rehabilitation, and that she should be able to return to competitive skiing at some point.

I’m no kneeologist, but after seeing how awful her surgically repaired knee looks, I’m not so sure I concur with Vonn’s surgeons…

Vonn’s gorgeous gams ain’t so gorgeous anymore.

Although this isn’t the first time we’ve seen post-operative photos following terrible sports accidents, the shock value will always be there. You think you would be immune to the ghastly sight of a swollen, bruised knee with a couple of surgical scars on it, but you’re not, and unless you’re an orthopedic surgeon or combat medic, you probably never will be.

Enjoy your dinner.

  • I Had 3 knee surgerys that looks good I've seen worse all that is swelling that goes down in a few weeks and after movement. Please stop bashing the doctors and the surgery!
  • I'm an orthopedic surgical scrub tech. I assist the surgeon during surgery. Those post surgery pictures look just fine, especialy since she had an ACL and MCL repaired too. There is no outward signs of infection or swelling. The bruising is perfectly normal. Looks like she on the road to a great recovery.

Sorry after I posted I edited to include. I wasn't used to how the posting works here, and just replied under another post. I didn't mean this to say you were wrong in ANY way.
  • I had one and that's enough for me..acute rupture of the MCL and torn medial meniscus in 1980, 3 months in a cast from my hip to my ankle..was back playing softball in 6 months,,have never had a problem with it..had a really good surgeon..
  • Thanks for this ridiculous idiotic post targeted for teenage shock appeal.
  • I have 3 knee surgeries myself and her knee looks like its suppose after having sum1 stick and cut you I think the author really needs to get a dose of what happens and quite trying make like the DR is a crack pot look knee surgery or for that matter any surgery it not a bed of roses but she is a world class athlete and Im sure her surgen is the best of the beast and not uncle fred back yard surgen so really lighten up she will make a full recovery and b back doing what she does in no time!
  • TMI
  • Author is an idiot.
  • I've had 1 knee surgery, with another planned for May, and yeah. It looks bad. Because her injury *was* bad! There is nothing pretty about surgery. From my side of things, it looks pretty good. There's not a lot of really excessive swelling. She'll recover. It takes time and energy, and a lot of will.
  • lindsey stay away from that goofy tiger cub guy
  • I have been an Orthopedic Joint Replacement Physician Assistant for 32 years. In that time I have assisted on 100's of ACL's. This looks great!!!!! I would love to have seen the MRI. Good job Doctor.
  • Really? Surely you jest. The experts who have performed the operation a thousand time say she will most likely recover but you the admitted non-"kneeologist"... The most ridiculous thing I have heard in a long time. Look at it this was now you can wait a year or two and if she never gets back to skiing because of unforeseen complications you'll get to say you were right. Please hold your breath until then as until then what you stated is stupid at best.
  • So long as she can flex and bend them up and around Tiger's neck, that's the important thing.
  • The ones she tweeted to Eldrick were taken about 8 inches higher up.
  • Yikes. I think all should knock off the excessive tweeting.
  • I've had worse. She'll be back.
  • Now you know why they knock you out! Just kidding, I had a total knee replacement six months ago and my knee looked even worse, she'll be fine, she's an athlete - used to training, pain, and recovering from injuries. The rest of you babies should just close your eyes and hope that you never get hurt.
  • What's the big deal? It looks like a knee that was injured, bruised, operated on, bandaged, swollen and... well... pretty much exactly what you'd expect it to look like.
  • I'm no Brain Surgeon or related to Albert Einstien but I have a Degree. My Degree is in Phsycology. My vast knowledge allows me laugh at will...
I have seen every grammatical error there is from whats posted and the comments on the Posts. I have come to good reason for such an event amongst Scholars. Herein lies the answer....
My hypothosis is this..It's Saturday night, people lose controll of their cognitave skills. Therein, everyone is skilled higher that any other. Makes perfect sense to me. Once you've had surgery you become an Authority to those who are gonna get it after you. They connect with you.
Then the next topic on medical problems changes before you get done advising others on the last topic because the thread is so long. Just keep typing your solutions to all the worlds problems, you will be heard. Thanks.
  • I agree with you. Everyones an expert
  • Looks the same except zoomed in.
  • I was a physical therapy assistant is the US Army back in the 1980's. I see that ACL repair has come a long way since then. It looks much better some of the ACL repairs that I saw back then, Orthopedic surgery back then was barbaric compared to today. Plus MCL repair, back then ether one alone would have been the end of her career.
  • I have had EIGHT surgeries on my left knee and is facing a ninth...This looks great compared to my first one...I know Ms. Vonn is up to the challenge of "aggressive therapy." I sure do look forward to seeing her back on the slopes.
  • I think she needs to invest in some new socks....
  • she will kick ass and take names next year. had 5 knee ops my self.stay away from that douch bag that plays with his putter. total piece of s.

  • Im a physician and with all the surgery she's had, Im sure that they will heal. The problem is that this isnt back yard softball or pick-up basketball. This Olympic downhill skiing. I know that she has the best Doctors and Tiger can give her knees a lot of exercise (opening and closing lol) but the fact remains, she still only has a year to get back into top form for the slopes- sooner for Tiger. I wish her luck. Only time will tell
  • Yow, I remember it all too well. I had a similar surgical procedure 40 years ago. My break rotated up into the knee joint resulting in incredible swelling. Did they use the electric drill to relieve the swelling faster? My recovery took almost a full year. The arthritis later in life will be almost as debilitating. I wish you all the best.
  • I think I would have rather seen RGIII's post surgical pics. Good Luck Lindsey, see you in 2014!
  • All of these "expert" bloggers sound like my sister; She barely made it through high school but had the foresight and great fortune to marry a well educated and successful physician. I refer to her as an 'armchair doctor' which pisses her off to no end! His speciality is G.I. but she's an expert on endocrinology, orthopedics, oncology, dermatology, cardiology, neurology, hematology, rheumatology, psychology, anthropology, vascular surgery and carpentry. My point is: share your well wishes but STOP giving your damn (unfounded and dangerously uneducated) advice!
  • They fail to mention she also fractured her tibial plateau which is just below the knee, where the tibia becomes an anvil shape. Its a high impact fracture, and along with her ACL and MCL tear, the swelling would be quite remarkable. I had this same injury almost a year ago. The swelling in this photo is pretty minor compared to what mine looked like. Of course I'm not anywhere close to being in the physical shape she is in. I broke mine skiing, actually trying to avoid a collision with a snowboarder who cut me off and failed to stop to see if I needed any help. I've been skiing for 30+ years and never had a single injury, until age 47. Best of luck to her.
