PLAYERS: Thierry Henry

Ireland-93251766
Check out this disgrace from today's World Cup qualifier between Ireland and France. Ireland's up 1-0 in extra time in the second leg with the winner going to next year's finals in South Africa. (The previous encounter was a 1-0 France win so they needed OT to get a winner.)Thierry Henry of France clearly handles the ball on a long pass in the penalty area, and gets the ball over to William Gallas, who scores the tying goal, and France goes to the finals, and Ireland gets screwed big time, and will watch the finals on TV.It makes the Irish in me boil over. Pathetic.

Missed Handball Prevents Ireland From Reaching World Cup

Thierry Henry is one of this generation’s legends of European soccer. The 32-year-old striker has been a member of the French national team since 1997 and has scored over 50 goals for Les Bleux - to say nothing of his nearly 230 goals in club play. He was one of the faces of Gillette shaving [...]

France Beating Ireland: It was the Ref’s Fault, Not Thierry Henry

Thierry Henry controlled the ball with his hand.  He flicked it to William Gallas who headed it into the net.  The goal, scored in extra time, sent France to the World Cup.  On the surface it’s an unrequited romantic narrative.  The heroic Irish were felled by dastardly Frenchman.  The incident played firmly into prominent stereotypes [...]

Henry: Hardest yet to come against Ireland

Striker Thierry Henry says the hard work is not over just because France won 1-0 in Ireland in the first match of their World Cup playoff, and he expects the Irish to fight back in the return leg. France needs only a draw on Wednesday at Stade de France to qualify for next year's World Cup in South Africa, while Ireland has to win to stand a chance of qualifying. ...

Old Logic: France Surrenders. New Logic: France Cheats

Ireland's World Cup dreams die, and France's live on, thanks to a goal that saw two strikers clearly offsides, and a pair of blatant Thierry Henry handball assists to boot. The Irish, as you might expect, aren't taking this well. First, make the decision for yourself: Now, let's see how they're handling it among headline writers across Ireland (and the UK, no friend of France)....

The Handball Heard 'Round the World

The World Cup field is set after a series of matches yesterday, none more anticipated than Ireland and France playing for one of the final spots in the tournament. The fact that with a loss on Wednesday, France – the 1998 winner and 2006 runner-up – would be watching from home is nearly unimaginable. Well, thanks to French superstar Thierry Henry, we don't have to worry about...

MLS Must Reject Henry

In my EPL Talk piece yesterday, I discussed all of the reasons that Ireland’s potential qualification was better for World Football than France’s would be.  Much of this thought process centered on the importance of American market to the success of the World Cup. But alas, Giovanni Trapattoni’s side was defeated at the hands of Thierry Henry’s [...] Related posts:Western...

France coach sees no need for handball apology

France coach Raymond Domenech says he and his players see no reason to apologize for the Thierry Henry handball against Ireland that put the team into the World Cup. Domenech said his team does not feel guilty about the way Henry handled the ball with his left hand before setting up William Gallas' goal against Ireland on Wednesday. The goal gave France a 2...

Yep, that’s what they’re calling Thierry Henry’s handball that led to France’s victory over the Irish this week in what turned out to be the end of Ireland’s bid to play for the World Cup in South Africa.
