PLAYERS: David Beckham

With the L.A. Galaxy in Montreal this weekend to take on the Impact, it was only natural that a reporter ask the Galaxy’s biggest star something about hockey. As we all know, soccer is not the most popular sport north of the border. When David Beckham was asked what it was like to travel to a hockey town for a soccer match, he had a brilliantly witty answer waiting in the holster. As you can see from the video above, Beckham took a shot at the Canadiens while paying a compliment to the Kings, who have shocked the hockey world by advancing to the semifinals of the Stanley Cup playoffs as a No. 8 seed.

“I think we’re the hockey town at the moment,” Beckham said with a grin before adding that he doesn’t want to offend anyone.

As we know, the Canadiens missed the playoffs altogether this year after a disappointing season. Beckham’s comment was very well-timed and light-hearted, but I’m sure the joke didn’t earn him any fans in the Montreal area. Moments like this one would seem to indicate that those people take their hockey fairly seriously.
