Liverpool striker Luis Suarez desperately tried to engineer a move away from Merseyside this summer but despite his best efforts he looks set to remain at Anfield for the long haul. The controversial Uruguayan had been linked with European champions Bayern Munich along with Spanish giants Real Madrid prior to the opening of the transfer market this summer. His impressive form with Liverpool prior to his FA-imposed suspension for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic saw him score 30 goals and make 13 assists across all competitions for Brendan Rodgers’ side. It appeared likely that Real Madrid could be the likeliest of destinations for him in the run-up to the summer window but their pursuit of Tottenham’s Gareth Bale saw their interest in Suarez shelved as they endeavored to sign the PFA and PWA Player of the Year from Spurs. Meanwhile across enemy line in North London Arsenal’s failure to agree a fee with Real Madrid over the purchase of striker Gonzalo Higuain saw the Gunners enter the fray with Liverpool over Suarez. Arsenal made two bids for the Reds striker but Liverpool stood their ground and maintained their stance that the player was categorically not for sale. Suarez went public with his attempts to force a move elsewhere following Arsenal’s £40000001 bid which crucially did not trigger a release clause. The 26-year-old complained to the tabloids that he felt he’d been ‘betrayed’ by Liverpool and Rodgers who he claims ‘promised’ he could move on this summer if the Reds didn’t make the Champions League.
