Since yesterday I‘ve heard lots of complaints about Mexico’s performance in the Confederations Cup which is being played in Brazil. The team lost its second game in a row against the hosts with an unimpressive 2-0, effectively eliminating them from the competition. I can’t help but think, why could people in Mexico (I’m Mexican by the way) be so disappointed with a team that hasn’t won anything important in its entire history?
I know they won the Confederations cup in 1999 but everybody knows this one doesn’t count and I’m also not counting the all-time most boring tournament in the world, the infamous Golden cup, and I’m not forgetting that they are CONCACAF’s powerhouse, big deal.
People in Mexico seem to live in a bubble where “El Tri” is the best team in the world (sorry Spain). Every time a new tournament comes around, the fans have high expectations not taking reality into account, and by reality I mean the mexican players being more interested in the nightlife of the place they’re visiting instead of putting all their energy into what they’re actually there for, and maybe if they did this, they would actually live up to these expectations.
This shouldn’t be a disappointment, its just history repeating itself, the same story with different characters but the ending is always the same.
Let’s hope things get better for these guys in the world cup qualifications, because I can’t imagine a world cup without Mexican fans.
