Manchester United continued to keep their top star players by extending the contract of winger Nani.
The Portuguese international didn’t see much game time last season after falling down to the pecking order under the watchful eye of former Manchester United veteran coach Sir Alex Ferguson.
The arrival of Shinji Kagawa and Ashley Young in the past two seasons meant that the 26-year old winger could only manage to sit on the bench or watch from the stands if Ryan Giggs has been included in the 18-man match day squad.
Nani has penned a new five-year deal that will see him stay at Old Trafford until the summer of 2018. It is believed that new Manchester United manager David Moyes has decided to keep Nani who only made handful of starts last season.
Nani told the club official website after he signed a new deal the, “Playing at United has been a fantastic experience for me. When I came to the club, I never imagined the success we have enjoyed so far. Training with top players who wants to win trophies just motivates me.”
The limited game time that was offered to Nani forced Portugal manager Paulo Bento to prefer Bundesliga based winger Vieirinha who is in the books of VFL Wolfsburg in his preferred starting line-up. Portugal will visit Northen Ireland on Friday in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier and it will not be surprising to see Nani start the match from the bench.
David Moyes was lighted to have Nani for another five years, “I am really pleased that Nani has re-signed for another five years. He has great ability and experience beyond his 26 years. He impressed me in training and I am looking forward to work with him in the coming seasons.”
Manchester United have only signed Maroune Fellaini from Everton this summer and they had attempts to sign FC Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas and Leighton Baines who plays for Everton but their bids were rejected by the respective clubs.
“I am happy the new manager has shown faith in me, and I am looking forward to help the team compete for more honours this season,” concluded Nani.
Manchester United will play newly promoted side Crystal Palace in their next fixture and Nani, who came in as a substitute in their loss against Liverpool last weekend, will be expected to feature for The Red Devils again.
