Manchester United are edging closer towards securing their third signing of the summer as they continue talks with Real Madrid over the transfer of Raphael Varane.

The Frenchman is the subject of strong interest from Manchester United and was identified as a target earlier this summer. Varane has just one year remaining on his current deal at the Spanish club, which forces Real Madrid’s hand in negotiations.

On Sunday, several outlets close to the situation offered updates on the matter with the general consensus being that Varane’s departure from Real Madrid was edging ever closer.

According to Goal Espana, and Real Madrid insider Mario Cortegana specifically, ‘significant progress’ has been made in direct talks between United and Real Madrid over a deal.

The breakthrough in negotiations is said to have been positive, with belief that a deal for the 28-year-old could be closed next week for a fee of €45-55m. Real Madrid rejected United’s first offer for Varane, it’s stated, but remain open to listening to offers.

Claims of a deal progressing were echoed by several French sources – according to Le Parisien, the two clubs are ‘very close’ to a final agreement. The French publication claims that talks have accelerated in ‘the last hours’ and that it should lead to Varane becoming a United player by the end of the upcoming week.
