Sounders 1 – 2 Earthquakes
The misery continues for both the Seattle Sounders club, and its fans.
After losing on penalties in the U.S. Open Cup final on Wednesday in Kansas City, the Sounders fell to top of the table San Jose in stoppage time Saturday night.
With a very unorthodox lineup and formation laid out by Sigi Schmid (4-4-1-1), the Sounders left most of their starting team talent on the bench for this game.
With the five games in fifteen days stretch the Sounders are on right now, it’s no surprise that Schmid would have to rest some guys at one point, but against the best team in the league doesn’t seem to be the right time to do that in my book.
Sammy Ochoa was the lone striker to start the game, and he nearly connected on two opportunities.
One of those being an acrobatic bicycle attempt that struck the cross bar and deflected over.
Super sub Freddy Montero brought the Sounders level in stoppage time.
Every time he is brought in off the bench he seems to score.
But Montero is definitely a guy the Sounders need to be on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes each game. Super sub or not, he is way to valuable to be kept off the field, feud with Eddie Johnson or not.
Kasey Keller makes fun of Lenhart
Okay, this really had nothing to do with the game at all, but it was one of the funniest things I heard all day.
Kasey Keller was making fun of Steven Lenhart’s hair, and he likened him to Dee Snider of Twisted Sister!
Put some spandex and some awful eye makeup on him, and he really would be the spitting image of Snider.

New man in the middle
New DP Christian Tiffert got his first start for the Sounders Saturday night, and he looked pretty impressive in my eyes.
This style of game is probably a lot slower than he is used to, which should help with his play making abilities.
On one set piece, he nearly scored, missing both the foot of Zach Scott, and the lower corner of the far post at the same time.
A perfect amount of spin was applied, as it curved gracefully around the wall, and every other Earthquake defender too for that matter.
I look forward to watching him and the boys gel together as the season reaches the home stretch.
The B team
At this level, almost any team should be able to field a winning team every outing.
Don’t get me wrong, we played a damn good hour plus without our star power out there, but to almost concede a win and go for one instead of three against the best team in the league is disappointing.
Sammy Ochoa had some good chances, but the revolving midfield support that would join him in the box just wasn’t creating any chances.
It’s hard when the chemistry isn’t at 100%, but these guys, sans Tiffert, should have a good feeling for each other, and that was not seen in this game.
Can’t hold lead
Kudos to the team for containing Chris Wondolowski for pretty much the entire match, but to give up the winning goal so late is inexcusable.
We should have walked away with at least a point.
Hopefully we can stop relying on whining to the refs about poor calls, and get out of this funk before we face Vancouver next Saturday.
As we finally did see late in the game, the chemistry between Mauro Rosales and Eddie Johnson is what we were missing the entire game.
Why not start them, and pull them early in the second half if Schmid didn’t want them out there for the full 90.
It’s just one of those things that I will never understand.
Up next for the Sounders, Vancouver Whitecaps at home on Saturday. Game time is 1:00 local time, and can be seen on King.
Keep those scarves up Sounders fans, we’re not out of this just yet.
