Tottenham Hotspur have sacked manager Andre Villas Boas following a humiliating 5-0 defeat at home to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. The result follows an unimpressive start to the season for Spurs who expected more after they spent over £100m in the summer transfer window. The clubs official statement said “The club can announce that agreement has been reached with Head Coach, Andre Villas-Boas, for the termination of his services. The decision was by mutual consent and in the interests of all parties.” This weekend result isn’t the first thrashing of Spurs this season, they lost 6-0 at the Etihad three weeks ago and lost 3-0 at home to West Ham in early October. Villas-Boas took over at Spurs in July 2012 after Harry Redknapp left the club. In his first season he guided his side to 5th in the league, narrowly missing out on Champions League football. This is not Villas-Boas’ first Premier League sacking, he was dismissed from Chelsea in March 2012 after only eight months in charge. The early favourites to take over at White Hart Lane include former England manager Fabio Capello, Swansea boss Michael Laudrup, Former Spurs’ forward and USA manager Jurgen Klinsmann and ex-England boss and Spurs’ midfielder Glenn Hoddle. Despite bringing in Paulinho, Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue, Christian Eriksen, Vlad Chiriches and Erik Lamela in the summer Villas-Boas could not fill the hole left by star forward Gareth Bale, who left for Real Madrid in the summer. Bale scored 21 goals last season, often goals of individual brilliance, while this season Tottenham have been frustrated by a lack of goals, they have only 15 from 16 games in the league this season. The news of Villas-Boas’ sacking came just hours before the Europa League draw which saw Tottenham drawn against Dnipro, managed by former Spurs boss Juande Ramos, who was sacked by the club in 2008.
