The Western New York Flash lost 1-0 on an own goal to Sky Blue FC Sunday, in what was the season opener for both clubs in the fledgling National Women’s Soccer League. The announced attendance at Yurcak Field on the Rutgers University Campus was 2,611.
The game was characterized by several near misses by the reigning FIFA Women’s Player of the Year, Abby Wambach, and by several great saves by rookie goalkeeper Adriana Franch. However, neither effort good enough to equalize the own goal 41st minute.
The score came off a corner, when Sky Blue FC’s CoCo Goodson sent a shot in that ricocheted off McCall Zerboni and into the Flash net.
Despite the score, the Flash controlled the majority of the first half, putting early pressure on the home team. 15 minutes in, Veronica Perez was pulled down in the box, awarding a penalty kick to the Flash.
