Western New York Flash forward Samantha Kerr was named Week 9 NWSL Player of the Week Tuesday after playing a major role in WNY’s 5-0 rout of defending champions Portland Thorns FC. Saturday’s victory in Portland snapped WNY’s five-game winless streak.
Kerr registered two goals and an assist to help lead the Flash to victory over Portland. She also played during the first half of WNY’s 1-0 road loss to FC Kansas City the Wednesday prior to the Portland game.
The 5-0 win for WNY set NWSL records for both largest margin of victory and biggest road win, and tied the record for most goals in a game and most goals scored by an away team.
Kerr’s two goals were her second and third of the season.
Kerr also earned a penalty kick when Portland goalkeeper Nadine Angerer was judged to have brought down Kerr inside the box. Angerer was sent off the pitch and WNY midfielder Carli Lloyd converted from the spot to make the score 2-0 in the 28th minute.
