Can Manchester United cause a few surprises and win the Premier League title from under the noses of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City? They are poised in third place with the arrival of new blood on the cards and online betting websites like Totesport are offering odds of 9/2 on United topping the table at the end of the season.
In the aftermath of the Wayne Rooney saga and the availability of a £50 million transfer warchest that Sir Alex has at his disposal, there has been renewed speculation that United could rekindle their interest in the Dutch attacking midfielder Wesley Sneijder. In sharp contrast to Rooney, Sneijder really made his mark playing for the Netherlands in South Africa. The Dutch reached the final, losing 1-0 to Spain after extra-time.
Sneijder is a creative playmaker and with his trademark ability to score from free kicks, he has earned a reputation as a dead-ball specialist. Although not the tallest of players, he is nippy and has the skill to keep possession of the ball. He can best be described as a two footed midfield maestro.
Things are looking particularly opportune for Sir Alex to renew interest as contract talks between the player and Inter Milan are said to have broken down. If Manchester United are to sustain the claim to be a trophy-chasing club then they need to keep attracting top-class players and no-one would argue that the 26 year old Dutchman would be a major addition to the Old Trafford squad. Bringing him to Manchester would show that United can and will continue to attract top-class players.
