Yesterday I looked at the North, Central America and Caribbean Qualification Group for the 2014 World Cup. Today I will be looking at the fixtures on Friday and the following Tuesday to wrap up, sort of, the South American section.
As hosts, Brazil are already there which means there are nine sides left to play off for the remaining four guaranteed places for next years World Cup. If everything was to end today then we would see Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Ecuador join Brazil next year with Uruguay having to go through a playoff game with Asian side, Jordon.
Again we have matches both on Friday of this week and Tuesday of next. Teams already with no chance of qualification are Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru with Venezuela hanging by a thread to their hopes. Now if you have done your math it would not have escaped your attention that this leaves only five teams left, and with four automatic places and a playoff remaining it pretty much assumes that these games are a formality.
Argentina will be there, they have already qualified as was expected. The real interesting part of this qualification process comes on Friday when the two teams directly below Argentina face each other and the two teams directly below those also face each other.
Fair enough the match between Colombia and Chile will just be a formality as whoever loses that game will more than likely still eventually qualify. However the match between Ecuador and Uruguay will be one to watch I think, with both on the same points and the loser almost certainly condemned to go the playoff route, it is sure to be a feisty game.
For the neutral it would be good to see a Colombia win and a Uruguay win on Friday as that will mean when Chile then play Ecuador on Tuesday the winner will qualify automatically and the loser has to go through the playoffs.
Qualified: Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Uruguay
Play Off: Ecuador
