Real Madrid says midfielder Xabi Alonso has undergone surgery after missing several games at the end of last season because of back pain.
The 31-year-old Alonso was left out of Spain's squad for the Confederations Cup in June in Brazil because of the problem. Madrid says Alonso was operated on by the specialist Ulrike Muschawek in Munich, Germany.
The Spanish club did not indicate how long Alonso is expected to be out while recovering.
"Real Madrid player Xabi Alonso was successfully operated upon on [Friday] morning for an athletic pubalgia," read a statement on Real Madrid's website.
"The surgery was carried out by a specialist in this condition, Dr Ulrike Muschawek, from the Hernienzentrum in Munich. The operation was supervised throughout by Real Madrid Sanitas Medical Services."
