Hawks 89, Magic 87 (OT)
Orlando–Before getting to everything the Hawks did wrong while blowing a lead before pulling out the W, let me take a minute to point out something that’s pretty remarkable.
After a period in which it seemed as if the Hawks would never beat the Magic as long as Dwight Howard was around, it’s now to the point where the Magic can’t want anything to do with...

Atlanta Hawks at Magic: Game thread
Larry Drew says Erick Dampier will be dressed tonight so look for Dampier to get a shot at checking Dwight Howard. “We need a big body,” Drew said. Hawks coaches went over plays with Dampier last night.
Josh Smith on being left off the All-Star team: “I felt I deserved it for two years in a row. You’ve got to factor in there is a lot of politics involved...

Atlanta Hawks: Erick Dampier signed; Josh Smith snubbed?
Here is my AJC story on the Hawks signing Erick Dampier to a 10-day contract. Here is my other AJC story on Joe Johnson making the All-Star team and Josh Smith being left off.
AJC wise guy weighed in on the Smoove Snub. Now I will take a stab at figuring out if ‘Damp’ can help the Hawks.
Dampier is a big dude. Maybe he’s too big. He was last listed at 265 but, based...

Here is the updated game story from the Hawks’ win over the Pacers, which snapped a three-game losing streak.
You can call it the Highlight Factory again.

Josh Smith had 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead the much-needed effort for the Hawks (17-9)...

Pacers at Atlanta Hawks Game Thread
I will double check with coach Larry Drew pre-game, but according to the Hawks coach this morning he is planning no lineup changes for tonight’s game against the Pacers. Drew said Tuesday he was considering ways, including lineup changes, to get his team to play with more energy. He wants the Hawks to get their ‘mojo’ and ’swagger’ back as they have...

Lineup changes could be coming after three-game slide
Vivlamore at practice on Tuesday. Here is your report:
No real news on the Hawks continued search for a big man to help their depleted corp – but changes could be on the way in light of the current three-game losing streak.
In talking with Larry Drew following this morning’s practice, the coach said he is considering a number of changes to get the team’s energy back. It’s...

Atlanta Hawks: Suns 99, Hawks 90
Here is the updated game story of the Hawks’ loss to the Suns Monday, their third straight home defeat.
Apparently, there is no place like the road for the Hawks these days.
After a recently-completed 4-1 road trip, the Hawks dropped their third straight home game Monday night, this one a 99-90 defeat at the hands of the Suns.
The Hawks (16-7, 8-4 home) have now lost to the...

Suns at Atlanta Hawks Game Thread
Vivlamore filling in for Cunningham. Here is your report from this morning’s shootaround in preparation for tonight’s game against the Suns.
The key to snapping a two-game losing streak is the Hawks’ defensive energy, according to coach Larry Drew.
As the Hawks host the Suns tonight, Drew emphasized defense to his team during the morning shootaround and with the media...

Atlanta Hawks: Good fit for Fesenko?
The Hawks plan to sign a center and it almost certainly will be a guy on a 10-day contract rather than a permanent addition. They’ve discussed Kyrylo Fesenko, Erick Dampier and Dan Gadzuric but, as far as I know, they haven’t inquired with those guys yet to gauge their interest in a short-term gig in Atlanta.
I’ve always thought Fesenko, the massive 7-foot Ukranian...

Atlanta Hawks: Sixers 98, Hawks 87
No doubt the Hawks’ vulnerability in the middle was on display again (especially since the perimeter D was shaky, too). Spencer Hawes found the perfect opponent for his return from an Achilles injury, Nicola Vucevic and Thaddeus Young got theirs and Philly’s guards found lots of space in which to operate once they made it past the first level–all they had to do...

Sixers at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread
The Hawks said Jason Collins will miss at least two weeks with what they said is a sprained left elbow. Elton Brand (thumb) is out for the Sixers. Spencer Hawes (Achilles) will play.
Collins is glad his injury wasn’t worse: “I didn’t break it, didn’t dislocate it. We will look at it in two weeks and be re-evaluated.”
There are different degrees of...

Collins has MRI, won’t play Saturday vs. 76ers
Hawks center Jason Collins had an MRI on his sprained left elbow Friday. While the team waits for the results, coach Larry Drew ruled Collins out for Saturday’s home game against the 76ers.
It also appears that one possibility for big man help – free agent Kenyon Martin – won’t be joining the Hawks.
“He won’t be ready tomorrow, that’s for sure,&...

Grizzlies at Atlanta Hawks Game Thread
C-Viv reporting from Philips Arena.
Here is a quick blog from this morning’s shoot-around to keep you busy before game time. In case you missed it, read my earlier posting on the Hawks meeting with representative of Kenyon Martin earlier today.
Coach Larry Drew is very aware of the potential for a letdown against the Grizzlies coming off a 4-1 road trip. He called for the Hawks...

Hawks meet with rep for Kenyon Martin
The Hawks met Thursday with a representative for center Kenyon Martin, the AJC has learned.
Martin, 34, averaged 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds in 48 games for the Nuggets last season. The 11-year veteran signed a one-year deal to play in China with Xinjiang during the NBA lockout last summer. He is eligible to return to the NBA following the Chinese season in several weeks.

Atlanta Hawks: Joe Johnson’s D has been strong, too
Much of the discussion about Joe Johnson’s season has focused on his offensive surge since Al Horford went down. And rightly so: In 11 games without Horford, Johnson has averaged 21.2 points per 36 minutes with a 55.9 true shooting percentage (by the way, his 54 percent TS mark for the season ranks fifth among shooting guards playing 30-plus minutes).
With Al sidelined, Joe...

Atlanta Hawks at Hornets: Game thread
Jeff Teague will start at point guard for the Hawks tonight against the Hornets. Teague said he felt “fine” despite the sprained ankle that limited him during Friday’s win against Pistons.
“Jeff is a go,” coach Larry Drew said before the game. “He was moving around on it pretty good yesterday. He hasn’t mentioned that it is bothering him to the...

Drew: Teague a ‘day-to-day decision’
NEW ORLEANS – C-Viv in the Big Easy filling in for MC.
Here are a couple of notes from today’s practice in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Hornets:

Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 107, Pistons 101
Auburn Hills, Mich. –This was similar to the Milwaukee game: Awful start, great finish. “I wish it could be a little earlier,” Josh Smith said. “I would rather have the lead than try to claw back into it and do it the way we did it. But a win is a win. I’ll take it.”
The Hawks did it behind Joe Johnson’s 28 points after halftime. There are times when Johnson doesn...

Atlanta Hawks at Pistons: Game thread
Auburn Hills, Mich.–Hawks will use same lineup as last game with Zaza Pachulia at center. “It’s not set in stone,” Larry Drew said. “We will stay with it for right now.”

Atlanta Hawks: The ‘big’ issue
My blog people have spoken, and the vast majority of you say the Hawks need another center now and should sign a free agent or trade for one.
Rick Sund also has spoken, and he says: “It all depends on who you match up with [in the playoffs] and how you do it.”
“Some teams you’ve got to be able to match up big and some you’ve got to be able to match up small,&...

Atlanta Hawks: Hawks release rookie guard Donald Sloan
Rookie Donald Sloan ended up being the odd man out with Kirk Hinrich’s return from shoulder surgery.
The Hawks waived Sloan today, well in advance of the Feb. 10 deadline for all contracts to be come guaranteed. The Hawks now have 14 players on the roster and, by my accounting, releasing Sloan gets them comfortably below the luxury-tax line so they won’t need to waive...

Atlanta Hawks: Spurs 105, Hawks 83
The Hawks are deeper than last season but the bench didn’t look so good against a team like the Spurs. This time Larry Drew decided not to ride ride his starters once it became lear the reserves had little to offer.
Hawks starters other than Jeff Teague weren’t anything great offensively but at least they played some defense. The Spurs made 31 of their 50 twos and 11...
