Holy crap, I work for the mainstream media now

Today is my first day as Executive Producer for SFGate.com, the Bay Area's best portal site and online home of the San Francisco Chronicle (part of Hearst Corporation). Although I'm still sad to have left all the great folks at Yardbarker and FOXSports, I'm very excited to be joining such a well-respected and large website. And those who know me know I never really knew...

I need to work on my Twitter credibility

At first I thought maybe the "Similar to @alana_g" profiles were just loosely based on a general interest category like "sports." But apparently there is an algorithm that determines the profiles, and I doubt the algorithm would recommend me for any kind of legitimate editorial job. Let's hope my business cards at the new job won't include my Twitter handle...

How I got my start at Yardbarker

Big thanks to LadyBallers for giving me 15 minutes on the soapbox as part of their Female Sports Professionals series. Please head over to LadyBallers to check out the full interview (including all my unsolicited career advice for anyone trying to break into the sports industry) but here's an excerpt about how I ended up at Yardbarker: Please give us a little background on how...

I paid for Don Cheadle to prank call my friends

My friends Jennifer and Onye are big fans of the actor Don Cheadle... or maybe not, I have no idea. But anyway, I decided I would do something generous and spend my own money ($15 each) to have Don Cheadle call them at their offices and jazz up their boring lawyer lives for two minutes. I have to say, Don Cheadle is an amazing actor, because in the movies he doesn't even seem...

ZOMG I'm going to Hollywood!!!

Oh wait, I think this was just the red carpet of GQ's Super Bowl party, not the set of American Idol. Rats. My Yardbarker colleague Jeff and I were in Dallas for the week before Super Bowl and produced 14 videos for our sponsor T.G.I. Friday's. You can see all of them on our T.G.I. Sunday blog. I highly recommend the ones that feature Randy Jackson, the best red carpet interview...

Pour out some liquor for FanHouse

AOL's FanHouse (or FanHaus for those on the inside) is coming to some sort of transition. Depending on how you spin it, FanHouse is either being killed or being absorbed by Sporting News, which will be AOL's new source of sports content. Stay tuned for serious thoughts about this news. In the meantime, let's reminisce about the Fantasy Sports Girls, who were introduced...

Please explain this Stanford football joke to me

Scout has an article about Stanford's domination of the Pac-10 all-conference teams. A fellow Stanford alum pointed out that there are some suspect names in the section listing honorable mentions:None of the highlighted guys appear on Stanford's official roster. Maybe Warren Wonka and Edward Snate time-traveled to us from some saloon in the Wild West, but surely "Ernest...

Rasual Butler didn't get my joke

It seems Rasual Butler accidentally tweeted pictures of his manly parts and then scrambled to claim his Twitter account was hacked and to ask everyone to delete their retweets. In his zeal to thank his supporters, he seems to have missed the subtlety of my middle school humor. It's ok Rasual, I know Twitter humor can be hard.

High school girls' hurdles race leaves me LOLCI

Thanks Gawker for this video of the most horrifyingly enjoyable high school girls' hurdles race. LOLCI (laughing out loud, crying inside). InjuryRate is a bad person for turning me onto this.

Steve Nash story is a hoax: he's not quitting basketball

The Phoenix New Times is currently running a story claiming that Stevie Nash is leaving the Suns as of November 15th to pursue a political career in Canada: A mere week into the 2010 NBA campaign and the Phoenix Suns' season hopes have been annihilated for this year and many years to come. Superstar point guard Steve Nash has informed Suns management he's leaving the team...

OMG SINGLE RAINBOW!! And other pics from the Giants game

I was lucky enough to be at last night's Giants/Phillies game where San Francisco whiffed on its chance to clinch a World Series appearance at home. Oh well, at least someone still loves you, Giants players...Also, I sincerely hope the TV cameras were able to avoid this mess when they filmed the foul line. Some idiot had "Free Johannes Mehserle" signs on the mast of...

Never should have given these broads microphones

By the power of UStream, I was there at TechCrunch Disrupt for the 'Women in Tech' panel. You can read Lemondrop's hilarious account of it, or treat yourself to the full 30 minute video: As a female in the male-dominated sports industry, I just want to point out that bla, bla, bla, BOOBS. Now excuse me, I have a sandwich to make.

My vagina has no comment on the Ines Sainz story

Thanks for asking, but my vagina doesn't really feel like getting into the Ines Sainz versus Jets issue. Here are some bullet points from my brain instead:I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED: I wasn't there, so I have no idea what happened to Mexican television reporter Ines Sainz that day at Jets practice. I suspect that it was legitimately upsetting, because Sainz is a beautiful...

Things aren't going well for this week's stalker

For the second time in as many weeks, I have a creeper on my hands. I have to at least give credit to Creeper #1 last week, because he was just slick enough to have me second-guessing myself. And he did manage to come up with quite a bit of info on me for his efforts. Creeper #2 -- not so much. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to "Marco Young":

My tribute to Ballhype

Yesterday Ballhype and all the associated DailyRadar Blips sites were shut down. If you try to access them now, you're directed to a thank you page. From what I understand, even some close to the situation did not know this was coming. Many might not know that I was one of the original Ballhype advisors, back when Jason and Erin Gurney were first starting the company. Jason first...

My three cents on the Jesse Jackson brouhaha

I heard the cops were called after today's taping of ESPN's Outside the Lines because the homie Bomani Jones murdered the two other guests. In this clip they discuss Jesse Jackson's "runaway slave" statements about Dan Gilbert and LeBron James: please click here to watch it if you haven't already. The only thing that could have increased the pwnage of Bomani...

BlackBerry Bold: $242 and three hours well spent?

Sprint PCS owes a commission to brianspaeth, JohnThorton, and DonCheech for my BlackBerry Bold purchase since Sprint Store employee Gloria and her stank face sure didn't earn it. Me: Hi, I need to buy a new BlackBerry, but i was wondering what the differences are between this Curve and this Bold. Gloria: With your discounts and rebates the Curve would be $50 and the Bold would...

I raped the BwB legal/ethics panel (allegedly)

This past weekend at Blogs With Balls I sat on a panel about legal and ethical issues in sports blogging. Panelists included Josh Zerkle (With Leather), Jonah Keri (writer for multiple papers, magazines, and sites), Dr. Nicole LaVoi (blogger and academic), and moderator Jason McIntyre (The Big Lead). You can watch most of the panel in the video below. Josh wrote up his thoughts on...
