The Tom Preissing Era is off to a crummy start. One of the two D-men who came over from L.A. in the Ryan Smyth trade, Preissing had arthroscopic surgery on a knee today and is out 4-6 weeks.
He apparently suffered the injury at some point early in camp, as he never took part in [...]
O’Reilly’s bonus and other nuggets

Ryan O’Reilly received a $60,000 signing bonus yesterday, as part of his three-year, entry-level contract. That money is his whether he plays for the Avs or not this year.
So, if he actually does make the Avs this season, his base salary will be $840,000, and he’s set...

Ryan O’Reilly signs contract
September 21, 2009 by
All Things Avs
| Comments
Wow, Avs just signed Ryan O’Reilly to a three-year,l $2.7 million contract. Maybe this kid will make the team after all. It’s an “entry level” contract, and there still is a chance – maybe a good one – that O’Reilly still will be sent back...
Stoa cut
September 21, 2009 by
All Things Avs
| Comments
Unfortunately for Ryan Stoa, my hunch proved correct. He’s just been sent to Lake Erie of the AHL.
He and Ryan Wilson were the cuts by the Avalanche today, which reduces the roster to 27.
As I said in a blog last night from the Blues game, Stoa’s lack of speed was becoming...

There’s not much worse than preseason sports to me, but it’s my duty to bring you the details of this tilt between the Avalanche and Blues here at the Pepsi Center, so I will not let you down.
12:17 left here in the second period, and the Avs are getting shut out so far by the [...]

Peter Budaj gets the start in goal tonight, and Matt Duchene will play his third game in four nights against the Blues. Other Avs players in the lineup include: Stewart, Durno, Jones, McLeod, Hendricks, Cumiskey, Liles, Hannan, Peltier, Hensick, Tucker, Hejduk, Salei, Stastny, Quincey...
Avs cut 10, Willsie included
September 19, 2009 by
All Things Avs
| Comments
A bit of a surprise today, with Brian Willsie among the 10 cuts the Avs just made. That brings the roster down to 29. Only six more cuts to go, with about a week left of preseason games.
Matt Hendricks survived the cuts, despite being a minus-4 last night in St. Louis.
Willsie was...
Put preseason games on TV!
September 18, 2009 by
All Things Avs

I’m with a lot of you out there, frustrated at the fact that the Avs never put any preseason games on TV. As several smart-alecks out there have reminded us, what is Altitude’s justification for not putting on preseason games when they run programming like “2Xtreem...
Avs cut Cann, Gaunce
September 18, 2009 by
All Things Avs
| Comments
Neither of these are shockers, but the Avs reassigned goalie Trevor Cann (to Lake Erie) and Cameron Gaunce (to Mississauga, OHL) just now. That drops the roster to 39 entering tonight’s preseason game at St. Louis.
The Avs must get down to 23 players by opening night.
Detroit...

I gotta tell you, I’m looking forward to one Avalanche alumni night more than any other: Alexei Gusarov Night.

Mike Chambers wrote this yesterday, but it was put on another blog section of the denverpost.
When Avs rookie center Matt Duchene first took to the ice at age 2, he wasn’t interested in skating, shooting or delivering that Stanley Cup-winning assist. But he sure enjoyed taking draws...

Roster down to 41 now, as the following eight players were cut and sent back to their respective teams. I’m a little surprised Burki was cut so soon. I thought he looked real good last night, on a line with Stewart and Durno.

Here it is, snapped from a few different angles this morning on the iPhone. There is what seems to be some kind of “Abominable Snowman” theme to it. He’s got his “Andy” nickname on the back.

I’m usually not such a geek zealot for line combinations, especially in an intra-squad scrimmage. But here are some line combos here from the Burgundy-White game.

Camp observations

I haven’t done much written analysis of camp stuff yet, but here are some early impressions:
-Ryan Stoa is going to have to work on moving his feet. He’s got a kind of loping stride out there, and coach Joe Sacco implied that he looked a little slow on Sunday, Day 1. Sacco...

Meet your new Avalanche captain

All Things Avs

Adam Foote will be the Avalanche’s captain for 2009-10. Just got word. Milan Hejduk and Paul Stastny are the assistant captains.
As I said just last night, I think Footer was/is the worthy choice, and it’s a well-deserved honor for No. 52.
