A closer look at college football's true dynasty - College GameDay

TUSCALOOSA - I’ll be honest: I was late to College GameDay. But it was a Saturday and no reasonable person other than an ER doctor or Jon Gruden should be awake at 7 a.m. on the weekend. The ESPN college football pregame show tentpole made its first trip to the University of Alabama in two years for this year’s installation of the LSU-Alabama rivalry this weekend, and it was...

Here's the Bengals Hail Mary radio call

When AJ Green caught a Hail Mary pass at the end of the Bengals-Ravens game on Sunday my first thought was how silly it was for the Ravens to tip the ball in the air for him to catch it and not knock it down. My second thought was whether or not Dave Lapham made it through the play in the Bengals radio booth without having to be rushed to the hospital. The former Bengals...

Tim Tebow is preparing to be a college football broadcaster

You know what's been the most refreshing part of the 2013 NFL season thus far?  The absence of TebowMania.  It's amazing what can happen when ESPN discovers there are 1695 other players in the NFL worth discussing.  Things are back to normal and my blood pressure is a few points lower. After a preseason stint with the Patriots and more than half of the season done...

AA Book Club: Jay Onrait's 'Anchorboy' is scattered brilliance

In a way, Anchorboy, Jay Onrait's memoirs (well, kind of, but not really) in the world of broadcasting is a bit of an odd release. It's essentially being promoted as a physical release in Canada, while only being put out digitally in the United States, the country in which he's currently employed (Amazon has an American physical release set for May 6, 2014). Basically...

Fox NASCAR promo: "2 guys 1 cup"

This is incredibly a real thing that happened over the weekend.  A Fox Sports 1 NASCAR promo before the network's morning show played off a very famous, very horrifying internet meme with the phrase "2 guys, 1 cup."  Additionally, a tipster tells us that what you don't see in the video above is the entire spot which went like this... "2 guys, 1 cup, and...

Damon Bruce reportedly suspended from KNBR

After sustained silence in the wake of Damon Bruce's rant about women in sports, it looks like San Francisco radio station KNBR has taken action.  And it doesn't look promising for Bruce.  On Sunday, Bruce was absent from his duties as pregame host for the San Francisco 49ers.  Rich Lieberman reports Bruce has been suspended and might even lose his job over the comments...

Maryland hired a PR team to spin positive feelings about its B1G move

Last November, when the University of Maryland announced it was jumping from the ACC to the B1G in a move that left us all baffled, the higher ups at the university correctly predicted that decision would not go over well. After 60 years in the ACC, you're bailing on Duke to play Northwestern in basketball? WHAT? They went as far as to hire a PR firm to leave comments on...

FOX Sports South host busts out De La Soul references

James Bates has been featured here before. Back in February 2012, he (hilariously) fell off his stool while previewing a college basketball game between Dayton and Xavier for CBS Sports Network. The former Florida Gators linebacker was at it again on Thursday night. While co-hosting The New College Football Show with Tommy Bowden on Fox Sports South, Bates managed to reel off...

You can add another prominent name to the list of former NFL players dealing with the frightening side effects of a career filled with blows to the head. FOX NFL Sunday analyst Terry Bradshaw is reportedly dealing with memory loss and depression, as seen in an article from USA Today. Bradshaw was having issues remembering things and visited a clinic to learn more about his condition...

NBCSN getting everything right but the games

Ed Note: This article appears courtesy Bloguin's national NHL blog Puck Drunk Love where our Steve Lepore also contributes. Sometimes, it's fun to pick up on how NBCSN is doing. We don't write about it much as we (and by we, I mean both myself as someone who's covered the NHL on TV forever, and hockey fans in general) used to. I think part of it is the...

Verne Lundquist takes a playful swipe at Brent Musburger

Near the end of the LSU-Alabama game on CBS, we had our first cutaway of Katherine Webb, who as we all know by now, is the girlfriend of Crimson Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron. And while Verne Lundquist did mention her sitting next to McCarron's mother, Dee Dee Bonner, he chose not to gush over Webb as his former colleague Brent Musburger did earlier this year. Check out...

College hoops on Fox Sports 1 is a solid production

Fox Sports 1 aired their first college basketball game on Friday night, and the outcome was what was expected - a solid, entertaining production. Gus Johnson and Bill Raftery were on the call, and you know what you're getting out of those two. Their chemistry was pretty good out of the gate. There were no onions on Friday night, but Johnson and Raftery were blessed with a...

ESPN's first NBA doubleheader ratings up 55%, viewership up 72%

ESPN kicked off their Wednesday NBA doubleheaders this week, and the early results were strong. The Bulls-Pacers and Mavericks-Thunder matchups averaged a 1.7 rating, a 55% jump from last year's first doubleheader. The games featured last year were 76ers-Hornets and Spurs-Clippers, which only averaged a 1.1 rating, with the early matchup drawing just a 0.9. Both games this year...

Damon Bruce digs a deeper hole

KNBR host Damon Bruce's terrible rant about women in sports didn't just occupy space on blogs and social media as one of the worst things to come out of sports talk radio in some time.  It was covered as a mainstream news story by some national outlets and local San Francisco networks.  Perhaps that's why it's all the more surprising that KNBR has remained silent...

Friday featured the continuation of the epic feud between ESPN's Keith Olbermann and WFAN Radio in New York featuring the sports pope himself Mike Francesa.  The entire week long battle has been the stuff of legend.  Ali-Frazier could only make it through three fights.  Yankees-Red Sox could only dream of this kind of intensity.  The history of Celtics-Lakers looks a November...

Desmond Howard uses slur when discussing Dolphins locker room

ESPN college football analyst Desmond Howard appeared on SportsCenter Friday morning to discuss the saga in the Dolphins locker room. (Because honestly, who hasn't given their opinion about it at this point?) During his segment, Howard expressed his frustration with the "honorary black guy" line of thinking that several Dolphins players have been rolling out this week...

Fox Sports 1 falling short with advertisers

There's a policy among TV networks to provide free commercials to their advertisers if ratings don't meet projections. These are called make goods and for the companies that bought time on Fox Sports 1, they received make good ads on the World Series on the Fox Mothership.  Advertising observers are now monitoring FS1's ratings to see if make goods will be provided...

Don't mess with Sam Ponder on Twitter

Vikings QB Christian Ponder has become quite the target of social media snark with his play on the field this season.  He's not reached Brandon Weeden territory, but it's at least in the same neighborhood.  Perhaps part of that is Ponder's high-profile significant other, ESPN's college football reporter Samantha Ponder. Sam Ponder has shown a deft touch in dealing...
