M-V-P! M-V-P! M-V-P!
Season awards are great, and like All-Star Game selections, provide opportunity to complain about worthiness and unworthiness on a yearly basis. We all know the BWAA are going to screw something up, it's almost a requirement, but there is some method to the madness; so in making these selections, I'm not going to be strictly looking at–I don't know–who the most valuable...

Francisco Rodriguez chases 57
Tonight Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez saved his 51st game of the season in pursuit of the MLB record 57 games saved held by Bobby Thigpen for the 1990 Chicago White Sox. With over a month left in the season, here's saying he breaks it. Having said that, there are several by-products that will invariably result from such an accomplishment and I wanted to look over those here now.

Those Tenacious Tampa Bay Rays: 80-Game Winners
Can you believe it? I'll be the first to point out that a) I liked the Tampa Bay Rays enough to bet on them to win over 79.5 games in Las Vegas prior to the season starting (only $20 confident though); and b) I sure didn't think they'd do it before September.
Let's be honest here. No one did.

All-Star Game 2008: The Home Run Derby - Handicapping the Contestants
I love the home run derby (as with most things baseball). It's a contest of power that proves nothing, but it puts on a great show for the fans. Fans want to be able to debate all of the nuances of the game and again, while the home run derby proves nothing, it provides fodder for such debates.
This season, just for the heck of it, I'm going to attempt to handicap the Home Run Derby.

Rotogod Says: One-Third Mark All-Stars - Fantasy Baseball 2008
Rotogod here. Today I will be kicking off a three-part series in which I'm going to talk about a very important phase in the fantasy baseball season: the one-third or two month mark of the season. It is at the one-third mark that fantasy owners can begin to more accurately assess players now that their performances are fairly well established. Here are my One-Third All-Stars...

MLB Amateur Draft 2008: My Draft Board + Pedro Alvarez Scouting Report
With the MLB amateur draft approaching, I thought it would be a good time to start profiling some of the young talent that may be coming to a team near you. Generally speaking, this draft does not have a consensus top prospect, like a Justin Upton or David Price, so it's anyone's guess who the top pick will be and the Tampa Bay Rays are thought to be deciding between Buster...

The Draft That Won't Be Hyped Into Submission
Anyone who turned on ESPN between the months of February and April was at serious risk of becoming exposed to the draft hype epidemic. Wherever or whenever you turned to catch sports highlights or news, you were sure to see Mel Kiper Jr. or Chris Mortensen telling you what it means for Player X to have a better 40-time that Player O. It all became one big circus, as it does every year.

All-Star Game '08: Top Players from the NL & AL
I love the All-Star game. At no other point in the season does more discussion take place on player performance, merit, entitlement, etc. on a game that doesn't even matter. Still, I vote. It's a yearly event and I love it.

Daisuke "Dice-K" Matsuzaka had better watch out. There is a new Japanese phenom on the horizon. Yu Darvish, the 6? 5? half-Japanese, half-Iranian fire-baller has already won the Japanese equivalent of the Cy Young award as well as the equivalent of the World Series MVP and he's only 21.

Among these, Florida Marlins sit atop the National League East, beating out the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies; the Chicago Cubs, on the brink of their 100th seasons without a World Series, are looking poised to make a run; and the Colorado Rockies are looking...

Seattle Extends Catcher Jenji Johjima, What about Jeff Clement?
The Seattle Mariners have announced their decision to give catcher Kenji Johjima a three-year $24 million contract extension. This news should come as some shock as the Mariners' top prospect, Jeff Clement, is a catcher and at the moment, is hitting .397/.535/.692 with five home runs for AAA Tacoma.

The San Francisco Giants Demote Barry Zito to the Bullpen, Should Demote Themselves Instead
Let's get some things straight: 1) Zito was never a hard-thrower and while the decline in his velocity is concerning, it was an inevitability, although the Giants were hoping the decline would come later rather than now. 2) Zito has never had good command of his fast ball. Even when Zito was at his best with Oakland, he was walking between 78 and 99 batters per season from 2001...

What's Wrong With Francisco Liriano?
This is a question that many, especially within the Minnesota Twins organization are asking right now as the decision was made last week to option Francisco Liriano down to AAA Rochester. All of the indications are that Liriano is healthy and isn't experiencing any pain in his delivery, so the problem must be either mechanical and/or to some extent mental.

The Evan Longoria Extension: Taking the Trend to the Next Level
Simply put, I wanted to go on the record and state that the Evan Longoria extension was absolutely brilliant.
