2012 Minor League Players - Third Base
We finish our tour of the infield minor league assignments with a look at third base. This is not a position of strength in the Jays minor league system and you could see the same players in the same spots to start 2012 as played in 2011.
Las Vegas Now that Brett Lawrie has passed through the sin city third base should be occupied by Kevin Howard. When Lawrie was injured last season...

2012 Minor League Players - Middle Infield
We started this series by looking at catchers and first basemen, today it's the middle infielders who we review. Because of the interchangability of shortstops and second basemen we will look at them together making it a double position look.
Las VegasThere could be a battle for playing time in AAA. The Jays had an excess of middle infielders, even before they added Omar Vizquel...

Fielder to Tigers for Lots of Money
Tim Brown/Jon Heyman reports that Prince Fielder has signed with the Tigers for $214 million over 9 years. That's just shy of $24 million a year, or about $1.2 million less than Albert Pujols received a year.Fielder will reportedly play first base, while Miguel Cabrera will move (to DH or Left Field, presumably.)
The total dollar amount shouldn't be too surprising...

More Morrow
The Jays signed Brandon Morrow to a (for all intents and purposes) 3 year, $21 million deal with a club option for $9 million. Will he be worth it?
The short answer? It depends. Per Mike Wilner, Morrow will make $4 mil in 2012, and then $8 million in 2013 and 2014, with the $10 million option/$1 million buyout in 2015. Going into 2012 Morrow had accumulated...

Jays are #1
John Sickels has done a farm system ranking for the first time - and guess who's top?1) Toronto Blue Jays: Eight B+ prospects with ridiculous depth behind them.2) San Diego Padres: Incredible depth after the winter trades pushes this system almost to the top. 3) Texas Rangers: Continues to churn out talent, with much more percolating at the lower levels. I do not give the Rangers...

2012 Minor League Players - First Base
Yesterday we looked at the placement of minor league catchers for 2012 and it was relatively straightforward. Today we look at first basemen and the picture is much more muddled.
Las VegasVegas is the first team with a logjam at first base. There is no spot for David Cooper in Toronto and so he is ticketed to return to AAA. Mike McDade played well in AA last season, very well...

Jays to lock up Morrow tomorrow?
Shi Davidi tweets that the Jays and Brandon Morrow are set to announce......
......a 3 year, $20MM contract with a $10MM buyout. I would assume there are some team options in there. If true this would leave only Casey Janssen unsigned amont the arbitration eligible players.

2012 Minor League Players - Catchers
We are in the depths of a baseball-less winter but pitchers and catchers will be reporting to camp in less than 30 days. The minor league camp won't start until March but let's start thinking about the lineups for the 2012 season. There is no hurry so we will do this over the next week or so. Today I will look at the catchers. Infielders, outfielders and starting pitchers...

Watching In The Winter
For those of us with mlb.tv and a hankering to watch some baseball on a cold winter night Bill James has published his top 100 pitcher duels of last year at Grantland. No. 16 is Ricky Romero against James Shields on April 16 and there are three other Jays games featured including Henderson Alvarez beating Josh Beckett on Sept 5th - my favourite game of last year.
If anyone else...

He Turns *50* on Nov. 18 ...
Apologies to Yu Darvish and all, but in the day's most fascinating transaction, the Colorado Rockies will sign 49-year-old rehabbing lefty Jamie Moyer to a minor league deal.Forty-nine. Rehabbing. (He missed ALL of 2011.) Sure, he's left-handed and has 267 (267!) big league wins, and I have always been a fan. But really? Jamie Moyer?More than one-third of the players on Colorado...

M's Pineda headed to AL East, Bronx
After the Yankees spent much of last season trying to pry perennial Cy Young contender Felix Hernandez from the Mariners with a package headed by catching uber-prospect Jesus Montero, the M's finally convinced the Bronx Bombers to change the asking price and the two teams have completed a different deal, sending Montero to the AL West in exchange for a different young ace with...

10 Photos - Jays vs Rangers July 31/2011
Today's POTD features the game played on Roberto Alomar Hall of Fame Day at the Dome.
Colby Rasmus takes a first inning pitch that Rangers catcher Taylor Teagarden tries to snare......but it glances off his glove. No one was on base at the time and Rasmus would eventually strike out to go 0-for-13 as a Blue Jays. However, things would get better for the former Cardinal on this...

Blue Jays Drop Canadian Third Baseman!
No, it's not Brett Lawrie. To make room for Darren Oliver the Blue Jays have designated Mark Teahen for assignment. The Blue Jays will trade or release Teahen after the prescribed waiting period, which is ten days I think.Teahen's status change is not a surprise, there is no spot for him on the 2012 squad. I assume AA has been trying to deal him with no success. The Jays...
