GAME DAY: Lightning at Maple Leafs 3/14/11
Lightning (38-22-9) at Maple Leafs (30-29-10) at 7:oo p.m.
The fourth and final meeting between the Maple Leafs and the Lightning is a must-win of sorts for both teams. Both have played mediocre at best lately, and both are looking to get out of ruts. The difference is the Lightning’s rut is making them drop in the playoff picture, while the Maple Leafs rut is keeping them...

Bolts (and Hockey) Taking Over the Twitterverse
Not just about what you ate for breakfast or which shoes you are wearing today, Twitter has become a legitimate source for the latest news on world events, like the Egypt protests and the earthquake/tsunami in Japan. Or, you know, cyber-stalking your favorite hockey player. Which in this case, is a very good thing for the NHL.
Twitter has become a must-use for hockey fans with...

Boucher calls out Team, Prepares for Florida
Last night, Guy Boucher called out his team’s maturity. He (correctly) pointed out that the Lightning play a full 60 minutes when it seems they “need” to against top teir teams, but then they have losses like last night against Ottawa that make you wonder why this team was leading their division in the first place.
This is one of those intangibles that brings teams to the...

Time for Expansion!
Bolts By The Bay is looking to expand it’s “net presence”. Yep that’s right, create more traffic. Someone down here in Tampa has to do it, so if it’s not going to be the team on the Ice, it might as well be the team on the (inter)net. Right now, its a one-woman show down here. It’s been working out wonderfully.
But of course, with only one person, I can’t generate...

Kubina Suspended, Chara Carelessly Chillin’
Pavel Kubina has been suspended for three games by the NHL for his elbow to the back of David Bolland’s head last night. Bolland didn’t return to the game, and has what was described as an “upper body injury.” There was no call on the play.
The league has been busy lately, and this was immediately compared to the Zdeno Chara hit, which got Chara nothing...

Shootout Personnel: Hit or Miss?
After losing in a shootout last night to the rival Washington Capitals, Guy Boucher’s decision-making is being called into question. Not about how the Capitals had all the momentum from the last 5 minutes of regulation on, not about being unable to finish off chances, but about probably had the least to do with the loss: the shootout.
We’ll set aside the fact that the game...

Bolts Fall to Caps in Shootout 2-1
Despite the fact the “defensive hockey” is touted as the style of Stanley Cup champions, it has one major flaw: you must play perfectly. It leaves no room for error. This is the lesson the Bolts have learned during their now four game losing streak after tonight’s shootout loss to the Washington Capitals.
The Lightning did nearly everything right tonight. They scored...

Despite Challenges, Purcell Perseveres
The AP
We all know the superstars in the league. The Crosbys, the Ovechkins, the Stamkoses, they were all number one overall draft picks. Hockey, more than any other sport, high draft picks are rarely a letdown. Late-round gems are relatively rare, and undrafted players who go on to make solid NHL production are the rarest.
Yet, the Lightning have two such players on their...

‘Ning Drop Second Straight 2-1
It was the same story, next day for the Lightning, who found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-1 score for the second night in a row in Boston. It was a similar game, with each team playing tight hockey with few mistakes. Also like last night, the Lightning made the last mistake, and it cost them again.
Starting with the positives, the Bolts’ offense wasn’t completely absent...

Bolts Fall in their Dance with the Devils
It went down to the wire, but Tampa Bay lost 2-1 to New Jersey tonight in Newark. The Lightning and Devils played a close, tight game that wasn’t filled with too much excitement. While the Devils are technically still on the outside of the playoff bubble, the trade of Arnott signaled that the team wasn’t taking their chances too seriously.
The result was two teams whose positions...

Lightning Stay Put on Deadline Day
Having already made some big-name trades, the Steve Yzerman and the Bolts stayed put today as the rest of the league finished re-arranging itself. This was actually a low-traffic deadline day, with only 15 deals and 31 players moved. However, this year, more than usual, high profile players were involved in trades weeks before the deadline.
The Lightning had already acquired...
