Ruskell Paranoia Ends
At least that’s one less thing to worry/complain about. Today’s Chicago Tribune reports that current Bears director of player personnel Tim Ruskell has been eliminated from consideration to be the next GM. According to the article, the finalists are Jason Licht from the Patriots (the guy it is reported has absolutely no control under Bill Belichick) and Phil Emery of...

2011 Conference Championships
I pledged that I would always owe the New York Giants a debt of gratitude after that team shockingly upset the Green Bay Packers in Wisconsin in 2007. My fondness for the Giants continued, even after they embarrassed the Bears in 2010.
Then this year, what do you know, the Giants again pulled off a complete shock by forcing a choke on the Packers at home, again. So it will always...

2011 Conference Championships and Thoughts
Prior to the 2010 season, I was hoping that it would take a couple more years than it did for Jim Harbaugh to break into the NFL head coaching ranks. At the time, I figured Lovie Smith would have a year or two more before he coached himself out of the Bears’ gig, and thought it would be awesome to see Harbaugh return to Chicago.
That dream is now dead, but how good is this...

2011 Chicago Bears Season
The 2011 Chicago Bears looked to be a sure bet to secure the top wildcard spot in the playoffs. The day was November 20th, the time early evening. The Bears had just won their fifth straight game as they handily beat the reeling San Diego Chargers. The previous week, the Bears had avenged an earlier loss to the Detroit Lions, delivering a 37-13 mauling and seemingly knocking the...

GM Interview List Revealed
Any of these guys do anything for you?
I didn’t like Dick Jauron as a coach. But at the end of the 2003 season, as much as Jauron was doing nothing for the Bears, at the time I thought “why fire a guy unless you KNOW you have targeted a better replacement.” I didn’t want the Bears to keep Jauron, but as much as I felt that way, I thought it was stupid to...

Arkush on Bears’ Situation
For the record, I could not stand Hub Arkush for a number of years. When he served as an extension of the Bears’ organization as a part of their gameday crew, he was practically intolerable in my opinion. Constantly condescending to the fans (i.e. “let me explain this a little better for the fans, who don’t understand”), unbending that his opinion was the only one, and...

More Articles Point to Ruskell
Sorry to say it Bears fans, but the scary news on the GM front continues to build, if you believe longtime writers such as John Mullin (which I do). Mullin’s recent article goes a little deeper into why it looks like Tim Ruskell may end up being the Bears’ organization’s choice to succeed (the ultimately unsuccessful) Jerry Angelo as GM.
I did a tiny bit of research...

Trib: Bears Seriously Looking at Ruskell
My coverage of the possibility that the Bears might hire Tim Ruskell as Jerry Angelo’s replacement at GM was mostly sarcastic, I admit. I didn’t really think the Bears could possibly hire the very most underwhelming, and scary given his record in Seattle, candidate.
But in today’s Tribune it is reported that “There is an internal movement to seriously consider...

Tice Yes-DeCosta No
Catching up on today’s news on a busy day for my “real” job.
That didn’t take long: today the Bears officially promoted Mike Tice to offensive coordinator. No surprise there at all. Let’s just hope this goes better than the “promotion” of John Shoop to replace Gary Crowton. That didn’t go so well.
Interesting thing about Lovie. ...

How Full is Your Glass?
So the last post made shortly after the announcement of Jerry Angelo’s firing was posted before the Ted Phillips presser at 4 p.m. Tuesday. As we all know now but didn’t then, we were in for several surprises.
I had to DVR the press conference due to work and still haven’t watched it, but got the overview from today’s papers. While we were all clamoring to hear that this...

Angelo Fired as Chicago Bears GM
Twenty-nine years of watching a Chicago Bears team run by the McCaskey family has lulled me into never expecting bold moves.
Michael McCaskey took over as president of the team following the death of his Grandfather George Halas in 1983 (as season in which the team finished 8-8 I might add with a smile). Michael went on to fire successful General Manager Jerry Vainisi three seasons...

Bears Finish Disappointing Season
The only interesting footnote to the 2011 season is their 8-8 record is the first time they have finished with that mark since the NFL went to a 16-game season in 1978.
Other than that, all we can say is what a disappointment.
I wrote on Friday that I admit I had the Bears finishing 8-8 or 7-9 prior to the season-my glass was not half full. What I did not predict is that they would...

Chicago Bears Weekend Six Pack: Final
Six final thoughts before the merciful end to a Chicago Bears season that peaked with great drama, but ends as an extreme disappointment.
1. I’ll say it again, in my 33 seasons (God, I’m not that old, am I?) of watching the Bears, never have I witnessed one like this. Yes, in 1995 the Bears had their best offense since the 1940′s, started 6-2 and finished 3-5...

Tillman, Graham, Forte Rookie Pro Bowlers
NFL Pro Bowl rosters were announced yesterday, with the Chicago Bears honorees being:
Brian Urlacher (Eighth)
Lance Briggs (Seventh)
Charles Tillman (First)
Matt Forte (First)
Corey Graham (Special Teamer, First)
Briggs is a perennial honoree, making seven straight appearances since 2005. Pretty impressive. Too bad Urlacher missed the cut in 2004 and 2007-2009, otherwise he would...

2011 Chicago Bears Season Over
Don’t feel like saying much about this one. As expected, the Bears were throttled 35-21 by the Packers in Lambeau. Chicago is now eliminated from playoff contention after the Bears gave up five passing touchdowns to Aaron Rodgers. It was Rodger’s first five-touchdown game in his career. Go figure.
There were just a few positives. Josh McCown, to me, earned the...

Chicago Bears Weekend 6 Pack Packers II
I can’t not post before a Packer game, but this one will be more like a three-pack. Taking my first day off work since mid-September, no shopping has been done yet. Like an idiot I have to get every bit of it done on 12-23, but that has been the result of my schedule.
1. Funny how a fan’s mind works. I still have hope that Josh McCown will be a revelation at Lambeau on Sunday...

What’s Left for 2011?
So let’s recap.
After 10 weeks of the 2011 season, the Chicago Bears were flying high. Winners of five straight and sitting with a 7-3 record, the Bears seemed to be a playoff lock. Only one player of significance had been lost to injury for the season, left guard Chris Williams.
Then following the win over the Chargers, word began to trickle out that Jay Cutler had suffered...

Disappointment Fork Towel Toast Done
This is not an article, just a series of disjointed comments on the finAl Day of the the Chicago Bears season for all intents and purposes.
- Good buddy Doug, fellow section 249 resident before the game: “has their ever been a team in such a good position that had such a dramatic turn to their season…?” Prophetic. I don’t know. Today we witnessed the final nail in the...

Chicago Bears Weekend Six-Pack: Win or Die
1. Bears receiver Sam Hurd charged with allegedly running a large cocaine and marijuana distribution operation. Astonishing is all that can be said. While the rest of us scrape by every day, a man with a $4.5 million contract with over $2 million guaranteed has to run a large-scale drug operation. Sad.
2. Speaking of Hurd, this was basically the replacement for former receiver...

Biggs: Angelo may go “All In” for 2012
After Sunday’s reports that Bears GM Jerry Angelo may retire following the 2011 season “depending on how it turns out,” many of us may have found ourselves excited and relieved. We shouldn’t if the Bears’ answer is to promote Tim Ruskell to GM, but that’s another discussion.
To me it’s hard to rate Angelo as great or terrible. Since taking...

2011 Bears’ Playoff Hopes Dwindle
What a season, this 2011 Chicago Bears season. Let me get this straight. Hopes are suspect entering the season, the the Bears throttle one of the supposed top teams in the conference. Following that impressive win, Chicago is suddenly considered one of the top teams in the league.
Then the Bears lose the next two games to NFC contenders, then ultimately begin 2-3 and are on life...

Chicago Bears Weekend Six-Pack: Denver
1. I’m surprised at myself. I did think that at some point in the year I would consider the ramifications of the Greg Olsen trade. But I’m surprised I’m just thinking of this now. When the trade went down, I agreed with it based on the fact that it was a necessary step in the “Martzification” of the Bears offense. Fair enough, the Martz offense requires large blocking...

Playoff Train Derailed
I am rarely overly optimistic about the Bears. To me, that just comes with the territory when you’ve been a fan for 33 years. But today, I told one of the vendors at Soldier Field that I felt confident that they would win today.
That, my friends and fellow fans, is exactly why I’m rarely overly optimistic about the Bears.
All I can say about today’s game is:
Matt Forte knee...

Chicago Bears Weekend Six-Pack: 12-2
1. I’ll shorten my usual twice-per-year, full-post rant on Chicago Bears organizational policies toward the fans to just one-sixth of one post, but as always it must be said. I along with my fellow season ticket holders received our letters instructing us to pay for playoff tickets this week. Despite everyone knowing that absent the Packers losing their final five games to drop...

My Prediction: No Cutler
As soon as the Bears copped to Jay Cutler‘s injury following the Chargers game, my gut reaction was that there is no way we will be seeing Cutler again during the 2011 regular season or playoffs. Yes, the Bears, Lovie Smith in particular, claimed that there is every reason to be hopeful that Cutler will be able to throw with his pins and screws in the thumb, but I never believed...
