LATEST STORIES FROM CHICAGO SPORTS BLOGS
Oh my god! A Blog post
Well what do you know? I actually still remember how to log into the site! How about a quick explination on where I have been these past few months. As most of you know my wife and I had our first kid last year, and as a result, I've been waaay too busy teaching my son how to be a Sox fan. It's been fun.Except that the Sox are absolutely terrible this year. It's been...

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things
While the past couple years haven’t really allowed
me the
time to blog as I’d like I can’t let Opening Day go by without saying a
few
things. I had already started
thinking about what about this day and the upcoming season gets me
excited. Then, as I was listening
to http://www.670thescore.com/
The
other day Laurence Holmes
and Chris Rongey
were asking White Sox fans...

Peppers!
Since I started using twitter, all my random Bears thoughts have been collected there. But with Julius Peppers signing, thought I'd dust off the old blog.
I love the Bears' signing of Peppers. A good pass rush makes everyone else on D look better. Overpay? Absolutely. But you have to overpay or you don't get him. They may well have improved their D ranking from 27th...

Bears Win Finale; Still Need Overhaul
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed today's Bears win over the Lions. It wasn't like season's past where they'd be out of the playoffs, and you'd mostly be rooting for a loss in a meaningless game to improve the team's draft position. With the first and second round picks gone, there ain't no draft status to root for. I enjoyed...

Top Music of 2009
It's time for my top albums of 2009. I didn't have a whole lot of time to listen to full albums this year, so my second half of this post will be dedicated to singles I like. It's not how I would prefer to listen to music but hey, it's an iTunes world and we're all just living in it.
Albums that will stay in the rotation
I'll still be listening...

Cubs Trade Bradley!
Sorry, wishful thinking. They haven't traded Milton Bradley yet. But they will.
In the meantime, let's take a look at the Cubs. The last time we saw them, they were crushed under the weight of their high expectations and missed the 2009 playoffs by 8.5 games. (That's it? They seemed a lot worse than that.)
So what went wrong...

Bears read last rites by Minnesota
The Bears were depantsed by Brett Favre and the Vikings today, and the season is "officially" over. Just a brutal, brutal game. Almost 600 yards of offense for the Vikings while the Bears were held well less than 200 (and only two - two yards! - in the second half). Favre had wonderful protection all day and his kick-ass receivers made the Bears...

Bears Whipped by Arizona. Time to Clean House?
Today, the Bears were embarassed for the second time in three weeks, as they lost to Arizona 41-21. Quick recap:
Can't tackle. Can't cover. Can't rush the passer. Top to bottom, horrible performance by the D.
Offense was OK, but still kept making stupid drive-killing penalties. Offensive line is still horrible as Cutler...

Benson gets last laugh as Cincy demolishes Chicago
There's not a whole lot to talk about with today's game. The Bears were completely outclassed in every phase of the game. Offense, Defense, Special Teams. The D-Line was abused, the Linebackers were running on their heels all day, and the secondary was flat-out horrible. The completely manhandled and overmatched offensive line was beyond...

Bears take care of Lions
The Bears beat the Lions 48-24 in a victory that wasn't quite as dominating as the score would indicate. Some quick notes, in outline fashion:
Special Teams were the stars of the day:
Johnny Knox returned a kick 102 yards for a TD (though he did almost pull a Desean Jackson at the end of the play). Hester, Bennett, and Manning all had nice returns as well...

Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympics
I woke up early this morning to be inundated with stories of the President's speech in Copenhagen. This was on the behalf of Chicago's bid for 2016 Olympic Games. I have to go on record as one of the many people who are in favor of the Olympics in Chicago. It would be one of the greatest things to happen to the city since we rebuilt it after that stupid cow burned it down...

Bears Upset Steelers
The Bears beat the Steelers today 17-14 on a game-winning kick by Robbie Gould. I was checking out twitter after the game, and Steelers fans are taking it none too well. First off, everyone pretty much agrees that the Bears suck, and its pathetic to lose to them. Second, they mostly pinned the blame solely on kicker Jeff Reed, because otherwise they "...

Bears Drop Opener against Packers
The 2009 Bears season started off with a spectacular display of ineptitude from our bright new quarterback, Jay Cutler.
This game had me scratching my head in the first half.
It was a pretty poor performance. And I know what you are all thinking. I'm being pessimistic. I'm always pessimistic. But this isn't the case tonight. This is pure fact. Jay Cutler had a bad...

Bears Lose Opener; Somehow Still in Playoff Race
The Bears lost an ugly game to the Packers. Let's quickly summarize.
Cutler was awful in the first half. 3 picks, could have been 5. Grossman all over again. Jake DelCutler. I felt like throwing up.
Cutler looked like a new man in the second half. A few great drives, some beautiful throws. Great pocket presence. ...

2009 Bears: Who should stay and who should go
The Backup Bears beat the Backup Browns tonight in the season finale. Jay Cutler played one series and didn't even attempt a pass. I so wish I had spent $75 on a ticket to THAT game!
Anyways, it's cutdown time for the Bears. Lets look at the closest races:
WR - Hester and Bennett are the only true locks on the team. Of the remaining WRs, Juaquin...

Jack's First Cubs Game
Ok, so the season is for all practical purposes over, and I've got the mother of all rants brewing. But I'm going to skip all that for now, and talk about my son's first Cubs game.
Talk about a breath of fresh air. Jack is a crazy Cubs fan, and he legitimately likes every player on the team. Even Milton Bradley. His favorite player is Soriano...

Bears Look Good in Second Tuneup
The Bears starters looked really good in beating the Giants 17-3 on Saturday night at Soldier Field. The Bears starters gave a pretty dominating performance, and that's really all you could ask for.
Jay Cutler looked very good in his three drives, all of which led to Bears scores. What you saw from Cutler was, IMO, Kyle Orton's ceiling. In other words, while Cutler...

Bears Training Camp, 2009
Went to Bourbonnais today to take in my first few glimpses of Jay Cutler and the 2009 Bears. I gotta say, I was very impressed. Cutler's throws cut through the air unlike any Bears QB I've ever seen. SO impressive. He makes Orton and Grossman look like, well, Orton and Grossman. It's going to be a treat to watch him lead the Bears ...

Cubs Thoughts: Closing Time
Ok, Kevin Gregg isn't very good. That 600-foot home run that Dan Uggla hit on Sunday, as part of back-to-back blown saves, is pretty much all the evidence you need. But you know what? I'm not worried about the Cubs at this point. I've pretty much given up hope.
I have absolutely zero confidence that this team can both a) outlast...

Cubs trade Hart and Ascanio to Pirates
The Cubs traded Kevin Hart and Jose Ascanio today to the Pirates for John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny. I don't know about this trade. If you ask me, Hart has been awfully good for this team. Three wins in three starts since the break while Dempster/Lilly were on the shelf. And Ascanio has pretty decent stuff and seemed overall pretty competant as well. Gorzelanny...

All-Star Thoughts and some Cubs Grades
Well, the AL won again. Ho-hum. Unless you happened to be in St. Louis, these last two days of MLB events were pretty dull. To witness:
The HR Derby was a complete and utter bore. Three hours is about two hours too many, and unless a) you've actually heard of the guy (I'm looking at you, Nelson Cruz), and b), he can get into double-digits...

Boozer to the Bulls?
ESPN is reporting that a Carlos Boozer to Chicago in a four-team deal is on the table. They aren't giving specifics of yet, but they are basically reporting Boozer to Chicago, Hinrich to Portland and Tyrus Thomas to Utah. I don't want to get too excited, because often these types of deals often fizzle out before anything happens. (Remember Kobe...

Gordon Gone
Ben Gordon is signing a five-year deal worth $55 million dollars to play for the hated Detroit Pistons. I'm a little saddened by this. Gordon's not a superstar, or even an All-Star. He can't play defense to save his life, and he's not much of a passer. But what he's good at he's great at, and that's scoring. ...

Abbreviated Cubs Rants
Lots going on with the Cubs these days. It seems every day inspires another rant. I could probably go on for 10 pages on each of these topics, but in the interest of time I'll try to be brief.
DeRosa Traded to St. Louis - Jim Hendry had a chance for a do-over but for whatever reason he couldn't get it done. Instead, DeRosa lands in hated...

A Little Mike & Mike on the Cubs
With apologies to the real Mike & Mike, my friend Mike and I engaged in a little email exchange on the Cubs the last few days that sum up the feelings of typical Cubs fans. It started Monday (after the Cubs swept the Indians) with an email from MikeB:
MB: Boy, I thought we had problems until they came to town and redefined the term “struggling.” Have you...
