More thoughts on Clemens
Roger Clemens' interview had many folks talking. I second Evan Grant's opinion on this. Clemens didn't say anything that surprised me and there were some unanswered questions. Let's see what happens when he talks to Congress (and to the Houston media this afternoon).
Some other thoughts on the inter...

Nolan sharing stories
Nolan Ryan was in Arlington last night as a keynote speaker of sorts at the 50th anniversary of the YMCA of Arlington. Ryan sat on stage and chatted with Scott Murray in an informal interview setting. He did talk about the Rangers president job before the event. But here are some highlights of his ch...

Nolan's last no-no
You can't have major Nolan Ryan news without reminiscing about his no-hitters, so I Googled up the video from his seventh and final no-no.
It's a treat to watch a 44-year-old throwing heat and buckling Blue Jays' knees with his curveball. But the best part of the video is ex-Rangers pitching coach T...

Catching up with Chan Ho
Rangers fans who miss the great Chan Ho Park will want to read this story in the Los Angeles Times. The $65 million mistake is back with the Dodgers as a non-roster invitee. "This could be my last chance in baseball," he says.

Surprise Party, Day 2: It's a wrap
I know, it's another late update, but I'm having a hard time balancing all the demands of the pesky print version of Seamheads (or the official name: dallasnews.com Texas Rangers blog) and my real reason for existence: blogging. I'll get it straight at some point.
Lucky to get the first workout in t...

Surprise Party, Day 4: It's a wrap
A few notes while I ponder if the Rangers could Punk a teammate the way Phillies pitcher Brett Myers did Kyle Kendrick.

Name that catcher
As Evan Grant wrote today, the Rangers have a big competition at catcher between Gerald Laird and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Evan included a chart I thought was interesting:
Age: Laird 28, Saltalamacchia 22
Batting avg.: Laird .224, Saltalamacchia .266
Homers: Laird 9, Saltalamacchia 11
RBIs: Laird 47, ...

Thoughts on Kinsler's deal
This may seem like an obvious question to some. But a few emails this morning indicate that some of you aren't sure the Rangers should tie up Ian Kinsler this long this soon. As one person put it: "Are we sure he's our future at second base?"
I think the answer is yes. First of all, it isn't just wh...

Surprise Party, Day 5: Break o' dawn, breaking news
Three sources have told me that the Ian Kinsler contract is complete. It's going to be five years guaranteed for $22 million. If the sixth-year option is picked up, Kinsler's contract will roll to $32 million; if not, he'll get a $500,000 buyout. Kinsler signed a $407,570 deal last week. I'm not sure...

Friday briefing
Not much going on this morning. I'm finishing off the spring training preview, which should be available online Saturday afternoon and in the print edition of Seamheads Sunday a.m. You will all be happy to know I've taken no corny theme on this and gone straight to serious issues. Feel free to discus...

Clemens and Congress
They are on a break right now in Washington DC. But it's been interesting (at least some of it, anyway). It seems that many of these folks on the committee are taking sides without blatantly doing so.
The committee chairman waited until near the end of the morning session to talk about the fact that...

Fowl ball
Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez and Hall of Famer Juan Marichal are taking some heat from PETA after appearing at a cockfight in the Dominican Republic.
They took part as honorary "soltadores," the word used to describe the person who puts the animal to fight. Martinez said he was only a spectator.

Don't charge mound vs. Millwood
Kevin Millwood admits that he wasn't in great shape last season, when he had a horrible year by his standards. He's determined not to let his gut get in the way again.
But Millwood gets bored with the traditional conditioning drills, so he decided to get into kickboxing and dragged Kameron Loe along...

Surprise Party, Day 3: It's a wrap
Getting this to you while it's still sunny out here in the desert. That's a first. And it may be a last, too. So enjoy it while you can. By tomorrow, we may be back to a post-sundown schedule.

Mench for the bench
Kevin Mench is coming back to the Rangers. Mench agreed to a minor league deal with the club on Tuesday afternoon. He'll fight for a backup outfielder's spot along with David Murphy, Nelson Cruz and Jason Botts.
Mench, 30, hit .267 for Milwaukee last year with a .746 OPS and eight homers in 101 gam...

Here come the relievers
If you count everybody invited to spring training, the Rangers could have as many as 18 guys vying for seven spots in the bullpen in 2008. But we already know a few of those players who have jobs: C.J. Wilson, Eddie Guardado, Joaquin Benoit and Kazuo Fukumori.
No jobs are set in stone, but it appear...

Surprise Party: Day 2 Bulletin - Kinsler signs (but it's not that big a deal)
We interrupt this workout to inform you that Ian Kinsler was among 14 Rangers who signed 2008 contracts today. Kinsler will get $407,570, which is a nice round figure. Now, don't think this kills the chances of a long-term deal. This just allows the Rangers to have something done in case the long-ter...

Pitching, pitching, pitching
Evan Grant's spring training preview focuses on what is always the biggest issue involving the Rangers this time of year (and just about any time of year): pitching.
Pitch counts are a big part of Evan's story, especially when it comes to Brandon McCarthy and C.J. Wilson, who must lower their pitche...

Looking at Bartolo Colon
Now that the Rangers have traded away Edinson Volquez, thought to be a viable option as the fifth starter, Texas may be more inclined to get an experienced arm to bring in for spring training. One possibility is right-hander Bartolo Colon. He's 38 years old, pitched in just 99 1/3 innings last year. ...
