Mavs hold on in a thriller
Before Monday's game, Rick Carlisle addressed a trend for the Mavericks that on the surface would seem to be a valuable asset.
It concerned the fact that after their first four losses this season, they came back in the next game and won all four times by an average of 21 points.
Against Philadelphia, they made it five-for-five in bounce-back wins, even though it was a lot tougher...

Mavs in a struggle now
It took J.J. Barea's 3-pointer with 14 seconds left in the third to spring the Mavericks free with a 78-72 lead going into the fourth.
For the second game in a row, they are getting tomahawked on the boards, with Philadelphia -- a bad rebounding team, by the way -- winning the glass 42-31.
The Mavericks are having to work way too hard for this win against a team that played last...

Kidd, the new sharpshooter
Jason Kidd has 18 points with 2:52 to go in the third quarter. That's one off of his season high.
He's also got 10 assists and four rebounds, but it's his 7-of-13 shooting that's got everybody buzzing at AAC.
The Mavericks have needed every bit of Kidd's offensive punch because they are clinging to a 73-66 lead that has been as big as 17 but hovered mostly around 10 points.
We...

Mavs' defense makes an appearance
The Sixers are shooting 4-for-18 in the second quarter. That's 22 percent and the Mavericks are having a little something to do with that.
Their defense is playing better than it did Saturday in Cleveland, although that's not saying much.
Sparks have come from J.J. barea, Jason Kidd and Drew Gooden.
Kidd already has 13 points and the Mavericks are up 48=36.

Mavs finish first quarter fast
The Mavericks went on a little 6-1 blitz to close out the first quarter and take a 28-23 lead over the Sixers.
Jason Kidd was responsible for the quick finish with a beautiful fast-break feed to James Singleton and a bucket of his own.
The Mavericks already have gone nine players deep and Tim Thomas and Kris Humphries haven't yet played.

Practice? We talkin' about practice?
With Allen Iverson looking like he could be rejoining the Philadelphia 76ers soon, the Mavericks were asked if Iverson would have ever been a consideration for them.
There was the diplomatic answer from coach Rick Carlisle:
"It's a non-starter concept and topic for us because we have 15 guys. So it wouldn't even come up unless there was a trade. And how do you trade for a free...

Dampier to be back tonight
The Mavericks will welcome Erick Dampier back to action tonight against Philadelphia, a source said this afternoon.
Dampier has been out for two weeks since a still-undisclosed illness hospitalized before the game at Detroit.
The source said he's been cleared to play. While it's unknown if he'll be in the starting lineup, it wouldn't be surprising to see him out there from the...

Marion a blessing for Mavs
Shawn Marion has played the last three games despite a sore left ankle and he was limping slightly after shootaround today.
Don't bank on him missing the game tonight, however. He's been a game through it and talked like he wants to continue doing whatever he can.
"I'm just taking it one day at a time,'' Marion said. "It's still sore and hurting. We're treating it, trying to get...

Mail call!!!
I'm looking for legit questions to answer in this week's newsletter/mail bag that I expect will be more about poking fun at golfers with 5-irons in their back window and tales from the road in the NBA.
Send serious inquiries to esefko@dallasnews.com.
You can send silly ones there, too.

Mavericks humbled, 111-97
The Mavericks came close to a franchise record for fewest rebounds in a game and were otherwise dominated by the Cleveland Cavaliers Saturday night at Quicken Loans Arena.
They ended up with a franchise-low tying 24 rebounds against the Cavaliers. It was a glass-kicking to the enth degree.
LeBron James had 25 points and 12 assists and Delonte West had a double-double (10 points...

About those rebounds
Three minutes into the fourth quarter, Shawn Marion has six rebounds, Dirk Nowitzki has five and Drew Gooden has five.
All the rest of the Mavericks have two, both by Jason Kidd.

Amazing, simply amazing
Not the fact that LeBron has 18 points and 12 assists, although that's pretty fair through three quarters.
What's really stunning is that the Mavericks are within eight points going into the fourth quarter.
They still don't look like they aggressor yet, but they have gotten this far without rebounding well or playing great defense.
It wouldn't take much of an upgrade for them...

Intensity upgraded
But the Mavericks can't make up any ground on the Cavaliers.
They are playing harder and smarter in the third quarter, but the one thing still missing is rebounds. After they pounded Indiana by 21 rebounds last night, they have just 13 rebounds tonight with 2:55 to go in the third quarter.
They could have a shot at the franchise record at this pace for fewest rebounds in a game...

Strange substitution
Drew Gooden was just taken out before the second of two Shaquille O'Neal free throws.
He was replaced by Kris Humphries, who is a good rebounder. But Gooden is the best active rebounder on the team, especially at the defensive end in traffic.
So naturally, the Cavaliers tipped out the missed free throw by Shaq and ended up with a 3-pointer by Jamario Moon.
Maybe the Cavs would...

Thank goodness it's a 48-minute game
The Mavericks kind of figured they would be met by a surly bunch of Cleveland Cavaliers. After all, they were beaten Friday night in Charlotte while the Mavericks were hammering Indiana.
Won't that make it tougher to deal with the Cavs, Carlisle was asked pregame?
"In theory, it could,'' he said. "I know our team tends to be more motivated after losses. Most...

LBJ rules the first quarter
LeBron James had nothing short of huge first quarter with 11 points and eight rebounds. He added four rebounds.
The points and assists mean he had a part in 27 of the Cavaliers' 35 first-quarter points as they went out to a nine-point lead.
The Mavericks couldn't stop anything. The Cavaliers shot 64 percent and had 22 points in the paint.
The Mavericks?
Zero.

Shawn, the new Josh
Shawn Marion has six quick points in the first four-plus minutes of the game and the Mavericks are up 12-9.
With Josh Howard out, other players are picking up the first-quarter scoring load that usually could be counted on from Howard.

Ross out, Thomas to play
Tim Thomas sat out the second half of the Indiana game on Friday with a sore lower back, but he was on the court before the game tonight and appears to be ready to give it a shot.
That's figuratively, not literally, as far as we know.
Thomas said he got some treatment on the back and was moving around fairly well.
Meanwhile, Quinton Ross, also suffering from a low-back problem...

Recapping the play of the week
Many apologies for not giving this play its proper due in Saturday's paper. But space and time constraints sometimes get the best of us.
Better late than never, though, so we have to rehash the outrageous play that Matt Carroll and James Singleton teamed up for with just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter Friday at Indiana.
The situation was this: Jason Terry missed a...

Mavs win, 113-92
The Mavericks finished off an absolute smashing of Indiana with the starters all propping their feet up for the fourth quarter of a 113-92 victory at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Kris Humphries had 12 points and 11 rebounds to key a huge rebounding night and Dirk Nowitzki had 31 points in 30 minutes.
The Mavericks now are 2-0 on the road trip that ends Saturday night at Cleveland.

Defenses catching up with Roddy?
The young rookie is having his second tough game -- offensively, at least. He's still a pest on the defensive end, but he can't get anything going as teams are starting to overplay him a bit.
He's got three points in 13 minutes, but he's looked choppy in the offensive end.
Just growing pains for the kid.

Go ahead, take a nap
You won't miss anything the way this game is going right now.

Dialed in from the field
For the second game in a row, the Mavericks are blistering the nets.
After throwing in 66 percent of their shots Wednesday at Houston, they are hitting 50 percent against the Pacers and lead 66-54 at halftime.
And after Wednesday, 50 percent seems sort of average.
The Pacers put together a mild rally late in the first half, knocking 10 points off of what was a 55-33 lead for the...

There's monsters in here
What else can you call Kris Humphries, who grabbed 10 rebounds in just 10 minutes off the bench. He was a major reason the Mavericks went up by 20 points in the second quarter.
Humphries also had eight points and J.J. Barea had five points and five rebounds.
The Mavericks are nearly doubling the Pacers on the boards, 28-15.
