Donnie Henderson

In the wake of Mark Carrier moving on to the Jets, it got me thinking of another secondary coach formerly held in high esteem by the media. With Carrier going up to be the d-line coach (to position himself for a d-coordinator job, seems like a smart move under Ryan who can show him the ropes and probably does most of the d-line coaching anyway) it looks like the Ravens will just...

Rate the 2009 Ravens Season

As we head into the off season I thought I'd wrap up my thoughts on the 2009 Ravens season while they are still fresh and I'd like to hear yours as well...with an A, B, C, D, and F rating. I can't give them a 'C' because that's average and teams don't make the playoffs every year. An 'A' feels too high comming off of the 2008 season which was an over achieving 'A' in my book. So...

Our Pass Offense (or lack thereof)

Did last night's performance by two offensive juggernauts absolutely underscore the inadequacy of our pass offense ? Granted, the Colts are human and there were some key drops - Garcon on 3rd down, for one. Still, I am sure we all saw just how much this team needs to go in terms of a SB caliber receiving corps. We clearly have the OL, running game, and the QB. Capped or no...

NFL Insider: Ravens want lower price tag?

There's been a lot of speculation over the past month as to where Brandon Marshall will wind up for 2010. Mike Klis of the Denver Post noted on Friday that despite Marshall being contrite about this past season, he's likely to be shopped anyway. On Sunday, the Post had word from Denver owner Pat Bowlen that he'd like it if Brandon stayed a Bronco, but wouldn't block a trade if coach...

What tender will we give those RFAs, if any? RFA: QB Troy Smith (5 round) QB John Beck (2) RB McClain (4) WR Clayton (1) WR D. Williams (4) TE Q. Sypniewski (6) TE Jones (Undrafted) OT Gaither (5) OT Terry (2) OT Moll (5) OG Yanda (3) OG Chester (2) LB Barnes (4) LB Burgess (6) CB Washington (1) SA Landry (5) PK Cundiff (Undrafted) P Koch (6) Interesting and a little extreme with...

Ravens' Top Needs Going into the Draft

I'm not convinced at all that the Ravens are going receiver in the first round. Actually, the more I think about it, the more I start to question whether they'll take a shot on any of the perceived first round receivers. The fact is the Ravens still have other needs besides receiver, so there's no point to reach, although I don't expect them to wait longer than round two to address...

Is Demaryius Thomas the Ravens' Answer at WR?

Thomas may be the most physically gifted receiver in the draft, and has a chance to eventually be an Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson type player in the NFL. His value will only go up after the combine. I think he's the number two receiver in the draft behind Dez Bryant, and more than worthy of a first-round pick. See for yourself:http://www.pressboxonline.com/blog.cfm?ID=2015

Ravens hire Dean Pees as linebacker coach

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/blog/2010/01/report_ravens_hire_dean_pees_as_linebacker_coach.html Pees, 60, had been the Patriots defensive coordinator for the past four seasons. He chose not to return to New England on Jan. 14 after his contract expired. It is unknown what this addition means for Vic Fangio, who coached the Ravens' linebackers for the past two seasons...

Flacco Mentor/Backup

While we continue to discuss the merits of Joe's experience in the Pro Bowl, I am wondering more about another matter- his backup(s) and mentor. Since it sounds like Troy Smith could move on, we might be left with John Beck as his backup. I am wondering, with 1 potentially backup and no current mentor/coach (now that Hue is gone), might the team consider an experienced QB who could...

Troy Smith Wants to Be a Brown

He sure wants out of town...QuoteQuarterback Troy Smith currently plays for the franchise that used to be the Cleveland Browns. (Cue the Browns fans either who insist that the Ravens were never the Browns or who get pissed at us for mentioning it.) Now, Smith wants to play for the franchise that currently is the Cleveland Browns. Smith made his preferences known in a recent interview...

Vic Fangio to Stanford as DC

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/blog/2010/01/former_ravens_lb_coach_goes_from_one_harbaugh_to_another.html I can't say I didn't see this coming after the Ravens signed Pees to be LBs coach. Obviously one Harbaugh was giving the other some time to get a replacement in before announcing Fangio was leaving. Read more...

Will the Ravens Take a Receiver in the First Round?

I know it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that the Ravens will take a receiver sometime in the draft, but I'm not convinced it will be in the first round. Believe it or not, the Ravens have several other needs other than receiver, and it wouldn't surprise me to see them take a tight end like Jermaine Gresham or Aaron Hernandez, or even a defensive linemen like Brian Price or...

Ravens notes

Some random notes on the Ravens this week... The Baltimore Ravens are not raising ticket prices in 2010. QuoteThe Ravens had a packed house in Owings Mills this week, as all of their coaches and personnel staffers were on hand for the yearly tradition of dissecting the roster. From Monday to Wednesday, the group goes through every player to rate their contributions from the 2009...

Bisciotti Opens Pandora's Box

QuoteFor months, the NFLPA has been asking the league to explain the basis for its desire to change the financial terms of the current labor deal. For months, the NFL has tried to create the impression that teams are losing money without saying that teams are losing money. The reason for the high-stakes high-wire act is simple -- if the league claims that teams are not making money...

On Mark Hendrickson…

Mark Hendrickson will be back in Baltimore in 2010. He’s taking a small paycut and will likely join the team as a long reliever and spot-starter (especially in the team’s early April stretch of 16 straight games, which I’ll rant on later). I’m torn on the signing, but definitely see the value Hendrickson adds to this club. First and foremost, he adds a left arm to a...

On Miguel Tejada…

As we’re all aware, Miguel Tejada is back with the Orioles for 2010. Like just about every move the Orioles have made (and haven’t made) in the last two-three years, the Tejada signing has come with plenty of commentary from the fan base. What I tend to be hearing most are rants and ruminations about Tejada’s final season-plus as an Oriole in 2007 and the attitude that...

Frick ‘n’ Jon Miller

A whole-hearted and sincere congratulations to Jon Miller, former Orioles television broadcaster and 2010 Frick Award Recipient for contributions to sports journalism. Miller will be inducted into the broadcasting wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown as a part of his award. Miller left the O’s on a relatively bitter note after the 1996 season. As many have pointed...

Snow and Baseball

I’m reminded this snowy Wednesday of the Orioles Opening Day game from 2003. The O’s won 6-5 over the Indians, in a game stopped in the 3rd inning for snow. That’s right, snow. I still remember laughing with my friends about the thought of snow in Baltimore during baseball season. This winter being the exception, Baltimore generally doesn’t see snow outside of January...

Rex Ryan and Bart Scott

After the 2nd half smackdown from Peyton and the Colts, Rex and Bart Scott sure were quiet in the postgame. I know the Rex and Scott supporters will argue, but I still say you are better off shutting up/playing the game. There is something to said for humility in sports. I know Rex and Bart wont change - its their mindset and they feed off it - but they still got a little lesson yesterday.
