Some Thoughts on the Passing Of Larry Munson
By the time I arrived in Athens, Georgia in 1994, Larry Munson was already 72 years old and well-ensconced as the "Voice of the Georgia Bulldogs." Almost everyone I knew in Athens loved him. I did not. I could not understand how they could like this play-by-play announcer who was a clear "homer". How could they love this true curmudgeon? How could they...

Maybe the NCAA Could Name The Final Four Brackets to Drive Ratings
There are concerns out and about that the fact that there are no number one or two seeds left in the upcoming Final Four could lead to lower ratings on CBS. The Time-Warner networks (TNT, TBS, and TruTV) are out of the picture, so the public relations folks cannot play the Nielsen numbers game to show record ratings.
What happens this weekend on one network will give numbers...

Some First Thoughts on the First Four on TruTV
I got home from work in time to catch the end of the "AT&T At the Half" on TruTV and then the second half of the scintillating battle between UNC-Asheville and Arkansas-Little Rock. As to be expected there are pluses and minuses, and Charles Barkley has been refreshingly good. So with that being said, here are some thoughts and observations.

The National Hockey League (NHL) has come to their senses and realized that you cannot safely play a hockey game when it is 50 degrees out and raining. So the NHL and NBC Sports have announced that the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic start time will be pushed back to 8:00 PM ET on Saturday, January 1, 2011. Here is the official announcement: The National Hockey League announced today the 2011

Who Was In The Truck For The Vikings Last Game at The Met?
The players are complaining about the weather and conditions for tonight's Chicago Bears - Minnesota Vikings game on ESPN Monday Night Football? What wimps! The wind chill is only going to be -1. When the Vikings played their last game at the Met (Metropolitan Stadium) on December 20, 1981, the wind chill was -8, and there was snow on the ground. Television Producer John...

Inez Sainz Does Not Have to be a Good Journalist, She Just Needs To...
With all of this heated arguments about what did or did not happen to TV Azteca's Inez Sainz last weekend, I am reminded of what a critic of commentators on Spanish-language sports broadcasts once said to me: They don't have to be good or knowledgeable about the sport they are calling, they just need to speak Spanish.
That thought kept running through my head as I watched...

Is This Live College Football or a Live NFL Films Production on Fox SportsNet?
Watching College footnall on Fox SportsNet is kind of wierd. I do not normally watch it, but had to tune in for the Georgia Tech - Kansas game today. Watching it on a traditional NTSC television is so radically different than what you normally see on ESPN, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, and FOX Sports (the mother ship).
The combined audio and video make me feel like I am watching...

FOX Sports Production Decision May Cut Older TVs Out of Info Loop
Panama City Beach, FL (Aug 30, 2010) - Just over a week ago I was flipping through the television channels and came to the FOX Sports MLB Game of the Week on local affiliate WPGX FOX 28. As I started to watch, I noticed that the in-game score "bug" was severely cut off, so severely that I could not tell who was playing. Yesterday, the same thing happened on the NFL...

FOX Sports Pitches In To Support Warfighters Abroad
For those of us here in the United States who provide services to support our warfighters abroad, we have life pretty easy. We come onto our offices to do our work, and at the end of the day we go home to our families and lives. Our warfighters (soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen) in theatre do not have that luxury. Many are in a war zone and there is no other way to describe what they deal

Oh I Did Not Hear the "N" Word on the NBA Finals Last Night!
I would like to be able to say that I imagined hearing the ESPN audio picking up some Boston Celtic using the "N" word on last night's broadcast of the NBA Finals on ABC Television. But I did not. I heard it and others did too. Surely there was enough time after they went to a commercial break to acknowledge the gaffe and apologize to the viewing audience.

No Perfect Game Replay on MLB Network for Tampa Bay, Oakland Fans
The MLB Network will be airing a replay of Dallas Braden's perfect game masterpiece Monday, May 10, 2010 at 12:30 PM ET for baseball fans to see what they may have missed today. Except for fans from the Tampa Bay and Oakland markets that is. The reason why is unclear, so we have asked the MLB Network for clarification. If an when we get a reply, we will post the reason here.

MLB Network To Re-Air Bob Costas/Ernie Harwell Interview
Baseball lost one of its great voices of yore yesterday when Ernie Harwell lost a year-long battle with cancer. The longtime voice of the Detroit Tigers, who was once involved in a trade, sat down with Bob Costas last year for a lengthy interview on the MLB Network. As part of their tribute to Harwell, MLB Network will be re-airing the interview today (Wednesday, May 6, 2010) at 4:00 PM ET/3:00

Golf Writer: Tiger Just Quit
Scott Michaux has been covering golf for a long time for the Augusta Chronicle. That means he has been covering Tiger Woods for a long time as well. He was at Quail Hollow on Friday when Tiger Woods' golf game came crashing down on him as he crawled home with a worst-ever professional round of 79. Michaux was at the Nationwide Tour's Stadion Athens Classic at UGA on Sunday...

When Texas A&M alum Martin Piller took the turn Sunday during the final round of the Nationwide Tour's 2010 Stadion Athens Classic at UGA (the University of Georgia), he stood two shots back of leader Daniel Summerhays. By the time they got to 72nd hole of the tournament, they were tied at 12 under par.

Georgia Golfers Balancing Nationwide Tour Tee Times with Final Exams
University of Georgia golfers Russell Henley and Harris English dind themselves in an enviable position this week. Bradley Iles of New Zealand rolled off four consecutive birdies on his last four holes to finish 5 under and take a share of the clubhouse lead at the 2010 Stadion Athens Classic at UGA on the Nationwide Tour.
