Owners and Players are Only Losers in Lockout
This is not one of those heartfelt diatribes about the suffering of the fans. Nor will his be the lament of a fan’s disappointment in the wake of union decertification and ensuing lockout.
The fans will be fine. We’ll get on with our lives with or without the NFL.
However, the owners and players won’t fare as well.
Sure, our desire to discuss free agency, prep for the draft...

A Ridiculous Contract Even by Raider Standards
Al Davis loves to reward his players. In recent weeks he’s made headlines by inking Richard Seymour and Stanford Routt to highly lucrative deals, placing an $11-million franchise tag on Kamerion Wimbley and basically blowing up the argument for the cash poor owners amid labor negotiations.
Just two years ago Nnamdi Asomugha’s record contract created a wave of controversy as Davis...

Chuck Bresnahan Promoted to Defensive Puppet
Well, it only took about a month but Chuck Bresnahan has finally been named defensive coordinator in an official statement made by the Oakland Raiders. This after being hired as a “defensive coach” while no other DC candidates were either pursued or interviewed.
Our long Raider National nightmare is over!
This has the look and smell of an Al Davis move. I highly doubt any other...

Samson Satele Tendered
Add Samson Satele to the slowly growing list of Raiders that were tendered RFA contracts last week. No word on what kind of tender the Raiders placed on their starting center but most see it as an insurance policy.
Being the only center currently on the roster makes retaining Satele’s services a must. Though he has run hot and cold in his two years in the East Bay, Satele got into...

Raiders Place Highest Tenders on Michael Bush, Zach Miller
Jerry McDonald reports that the Raiders have placed the highest tenders on both Michael Bush and Zach Miller. Of course this means little to nothing if the next CBA doesn’t allow for fourth-year players to be considered restricted free agents.
For now it means any team interested in acquiring the services of either Bush or Miller will have to part with a 1st and a 3rd round pick...

Money Talks, Robert Gallery Walks
John Herrera just can’t leave well enough alone.
Yesterday Robert Gallery announced he and the Raiders “mutually” agreed to part ways. It was widely assumed this was a business decision. It’s pro football. It’s a business. We all know that the term “mutually” usually means “money related”.
Whatever. That’s the way these things go.
Gallery thanked Al Davis...

The Legacy of JaMarcus Russell: 7 Wins, 1 Mansion in Foreclosure
The stench of JaMarcus Russell has nearly blown completely out of the East Bay. TMZ reports that Russell’s $2.4-million home in Oakland is in foreclosure. Apparently in the $32-million he earned (I use that term very loosely) from Al Davis, Russell can’t spare the nearly $200,000 he owes in past due payments.
Should the Prince of the Purple Stuff be unable to come up with the...

Robert Gallery is a Goner
Can’t say I didn’t see this one coming. The Raiders’ youth movement is finally working its way through the offensive line. According to an ESPN report, Robert Gallery has said his farewells to Al Davis and will seek employment elsewhere. The Disney Sports Network quotes Gallery in the report.
“With the end of the league year coming today, and the few conversations I&...

You Don’t Have to Ask Kamerion Wimbley Twice
I don’t know about you. But if you asked me if I wanted to make $10-million, my response would be the same as Kamerion Wimbley’s: where do I sign up?
Not that it comes as any surprise but today word spread that Wimbley has every intention of singing the franchise tag the Raiders placed on him.
Initially, the franchise figure for Wimbley was reported to be worth $10-million. Adam...

Al Davis Doesn’t Have a Savings Plan
If the Oakland Raiders are supposed to be a struggling NFL franchise locked away in a smaller market then nobody told Al Davis. In the last two weeks Davis has done his usual middle finger routine to his fellow NFL owners.
In a tense labor climate where billionaires are crying broke, Davis is spending like there’s no tomorrow. Then again, there might not be a tomorrow. That doomsday...

Raiders Bring Back Rock Cartwright, John Henderson
Yesterday was a busy day for Al’s checkbook. It has become an annual ritual for the Raiders to make some DB very happy as this time it was Stanford Routt’s turn to cash in. As if Routt’s $31-million deal wasn’t staggering enough, along came news of Kamerion Wimbley receiving the franchise tag. A tag valued at $10-million for next season.
But yesterday wasn’t all about the...

Stanford Routt Gets Paid, Nnamdi Asomugha Gets Played
When Al Davis said Nnamdi Asomugha’s $16-million salary in 2011 could pay for two players he was referring to Stanford Routt and Kamerion Wimbley. This much has been made clear as the dust settles on a hectic day of money matters.
Earlier in the day word spread of the Raiders coming to terms on a new deal for Routt. We now know what the terms of that contract are.
Routt just got...

Kamerion Wimbley Gets Tagged
More news on the Oakland defensive front as Jason La Canfora reports the Raiders have placed their franchise tag on Kamerion Wimbley. Just a couple days ago Oakland expressed their intent to exercise a buy-back option on Wimbley’s rookie deal. But that was before the league stepped in and declared the buy-back in violation of the 30% rule.
Instead of allowing their leading sacker...

Raiders Re-up with Routt
According to Jason La Canfora the Raiders have come to terms on a contract extension with Stanford Routt. The NFL Network Insider cites a “source with knowledge of the situation” but reveals no specifics of the new deal.
Good news for the Raiders who were in danger of losing their top two corners. With Nnamdi Asomugha free to hit the open market, keeping Routt was a top priority...

The Combine is Calling
For Al Davis this time of year is like Christmas. Except instead of boxes wrapped in colorful paper, the foot of his tree is littered with cornerbacks, wide receivers and all sorts of other skilled positions with sub 4.3-second potential.
Yes, there are no secrets. Whenever a player gets into his stance to run 40 yards he’s only 4 seconds and some change away from having his name...

Kamerion Wimbley is a Keeper
Rumored for over a week, today the Raiders officially informed Kamerion Wimbley’s agent that they will exercise the $3.5-million buy back on his contract. All Wimbley did was record a team high 9 sacks last season. Overall you’d have to say he was well worth the third round pick the Raiders gave the Browns for his services.
Wimbley’s versatility proved invaluable in John Marshall’s...

Jason Campbell Still a Short Term Solution
Maybe if Tom Cable didn’t have such a man crush on Bruce Gradkowski we might be having a different conversation right now. Chances are that even if Jason Campbell had been given every snap in 2010 we’d still have arrived at the same fork in the road. When compared to JaMarcus Russell, Campbell looks like Jim Plunkett. But no matter what Al Davis might think, when Campbell is...

With Seymour in is Asomugha Out?
Anytime Al Davis opens his checkbook the repercussions usually spread throughout the NFL. Those $30-million Davis has committed to Richard Seymour over the next two years are only the most recent wave making stones tossed into the pool of pro football. This time the splash Davis has made could leave him all wet.
Amid the speculation of who will now be franchised in the wake of the...

It’s Official: Raiders Announce Seymour Signing
Yesterday news spread of the Oakland Raiders and Richard Seymour coming to terms on a two-year deal. Today, the Raiders made the news official with an announcement on their website.
Though none of the terms were disclosed, SI.com has the contract valued at $30-million, $22-million of which is guaranteed. Hey, it’s good to be an All-Pro defensive lineman employed by Al Davis.

Seymour Contract Frees Franchise Tag for Zach Miller
Now that the Oakland Raiders have made Richard Seymour the highest paid defensive player in the NFL, it’s time to focus in on the next order of business. No, not hiring a defensive coordinator. Who needs one of those? Not pursuing Nnamdi Asomugha. Why pay a DB $16-million when you can pay a defensive lineman $15-million? No, the next order of business is keeping the best asset...

Wax Nostalgic
Who is doing the hiring of our new coaching staff, Hue Jackson or Al Davis? If Hue is doing the hiring, he is getting philosophical with hiring all of the past players as coaches. The hiring of Rod Woodsen, Steve Wisniewski and the promotion of Greg Biekert may be Hue’s way of getting the nation on his side. Who doesn’t love seeing all the past great Raiders on the side lines...

Raiders Reach Two-Year Agreement with Richard Seymour
Just when it looked like another franchise tag was in order along comes news that the Raiders have signed Richard Seymour to a two-year deal. According to Sports Illustrated the deal is worth $30-million, $22-million of which is guaranteed.
While the numbers are very similar to what he would have received under the stipulations of the franchise tag, this deal brings to an end Seymour’s...

Rod Woodson to Coach Cornerbacks
Once a Raider, always a Raider. That has long been the motto as few NFL teams routinely retain the services of their players as often and frequently as Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders do. Today the Raiders announced another addition to Hue Jackson’s staff by appointing Hall of Famer Rod Woodson as cornerbacks coach.
Woodson is the latest member of the staff with Silver and Black...

Playoffs or Bust for Hue Jackson
For Tom Cable, 8 was not enough. By proclaiming the Raiders couldn’t be called “losers anymore” Cable authored his parting words as Al Davis showed him the exit. The best season in seven painful years wasn’t what Davis expected. In Al’s mind the Raiders were a playoff team in 2010. A missed kick in Arizona here, a bad performance in San Francisco there and this squad could...
