Monday debate: next move with Ruutu
A week ago, some hockey "insiders" were saying a Tuomo Ruutu trade was "imminent."
A week later, there's talk Canes general manager Jim Rutherford may be negotiating a contract extension for the hard-charging forward, who's due to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.
Question: when all is said and done, which will it be? Will Ruutu be traded...

Canes taking extra bodies out West
The Canes are headed West and they'll be taking a few extra bodies along.
Chad LaRose, out the past two games with flu-like symptoms, was at practice today at the RBC Center. LaRose is ready to rejoin the lineup, but Canes coach Kirk Muller said an extra forward likely would be on the three-game trip to Anaheim, Colorado and Montreal.

Canes 2, Kings 1
RALEIGH — In the grand scheme of things, moving out of last place in the Eastern Conference may not seem all that notable.
But the Canes will take it, and especially after a hard-working 2-1 victory Saturday over the Los Angeles Kings at the RBC Center.
Jeff Skinner and Jiri Tlusty scored, Cam Ward again was rock-solid in net and the Hurricanes overcame a slumbering start to...

Canes' sweep overshadowed by Gagner?
Which was more impressive Thursday night, Sam Gagner's eight-point game for the Edmonton Oilers or the Canes finishing off a season sweep of the Boston Bruins?
Gagner's big night grabbed most of the NHL headlines and had the Twitterverse ablaze. But the Canes beat the Bruins 3-0 for the first regular-season series sweep in franchise history, and did it against a team that...

Canes head to Boston looking for sweep
The Canes' Chad LaRose missed practice today with flu-like symptoms, coach Kirk Muller said, but should be ready for Thursday's road game against the Boston Bruins.
Muller also said defenseman Jaroslav Spacek, who has missed the last six games, could return to the lineup. If Spacek can play Thursday, that would make Derek Joslin a healthy scratch.
The Canes will be seeking...

Islanders 5, Canes 2
For a long time Tuesday night, the Carolina Hurricanes couldn’t find a way to get the puck past a 21-year-old goalie who was playing for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers last week.
The Canes finally found a way to beat unheralded Kevin Poulin, only to be beaten by a player everyone in the NHL knows all too well: All-Star forward John Tavares.
After the Canes rallied for a pair of...

Ruutu: 'There's nothing I can really do'
Canes defenseman Tim Gleason called constant trade speculation a "nightmare" after signing a contract extension Monday that put it to an end.
Tuomo Ruutu? The forward now has moved closer to the center of the trade storm. Ruutu said today he has had no contract negotiations with Canes management, but insisted he's not affected or burdened by the trade rumors floating...

Faulk back from All-Star shoulder-rubbing
Justin Faulk always thought he had a heavy shot, which is understandable. He does.
The Canes' rookie defenseman also was aware of the shooting prowess of Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins. But he was even more impressed when seeing the "Chara Cannon" first-hand during the Skills Competition at the 2012 NHL All-Star Weekend in Ottawa.
"Shooting 108, 109 miles an...

Canes go back to work amid rumors
It's back to work for the Canes today. Time to prepare for the final push.
But with just 31 games remaining and 10 points out of playoff position, how much of a push can the Canes make?
"It's hard to say," general manager Jim Rutherford says. "There's so much parity and you don't know how injuries will affect teams, or which teams will fall off. All...

Monday debate: is a blockbuster possible?
The trade speculation has been constant and will heat up even more.
The Canes' names have been out there: Tim Gleason, Tuomo Ruutu, Jaroslav Spacek, Bryan Allen. "UFA" might as well stand for Undetermined Future Acquisition, to read some of the trade gossip floating around the 'net.
But there are some in the Canadian media who want to float two other names: Eric Staal and Cam Ward...

Canes 2, Jets 1
RALEIGH -- The Carolina Hurricanes may believe the NHL All-Star Game break is coming at the wrong time.
The Hurricanes topped the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 Monday at the RBC Center, getting first-period goals from Jeff Skinner and Tim Brent and another standing-tall game in net by goaltender Cam Ward.
"Tonight was a grind," said Ward, who had 29 saves. "The Jets definitely...

Canes' last test before break: Mason, Jets
Winnipeg Jets goalie Chris Mason was discussing tonight's game against the Canes, and his three wins against them this season, when the talk turned to the All-Star Game break.
"Sometimes you can take a break before you actually get to the break," said Mason, who will start tonight.
In other words, begin to mentally relax. That shouldn't be a problem for the Jets...

Whitney enjoys productive return
Ray Whitney's north Raleigh neighborhood was easy to spot. Maybe even from space. Wearing bright neon green T-shirts with Whitney's No. 13 on them, the former Hurricanes forward enjoyed significant support in his return to the RBC Center on Wednesday with the Phoenix Coyotes.
It could hardly have gone better for Whitney: He scored Phoenix's first goal and forced the turnover...

Coyotes 4, Canes 3
RALEIGH – It was a tough loss for the Carolina Hurricanes and no one seemed to take it any harder than team captain Eric Staal.
After the Phoenix Coyotes had rallied for a 4-3 victory Wednesday, Staal stepped forward to accept most of the responsibility for the loss.
"I've got to be the best player on the ice on a night like tonight, and I wasn't," said Staal, who was minus-3 for...

Whitney: RBC Center return will be 'weird'
Ray Whitney had a game to play and not much time to talk, but he did have a point to make: returning to the RBC Center tomorrow night will be special.

As debate rages in Montreal, Muller's glass is "demi" full
In any language, Kirk Muller knew to stay away. Asked about the Francophone Furor in Montreal since the Canadiens fired French-speaking head coach Jacques Martin and appointed English-speaking Randy Cunneyworth their interim coach in his place, Muller spoke delicately.
“I look at it more like, my glass is half full,” Muller said. “Nashville gave me an opportunity...
