What'd I Say?

And with that, we close the book on new content at this blog. It will remain as an archive as we continue to move over the comments section and find an easy way to index things at the new place. I hope you join me, but do understand if this breaks the chain. This has been an education, a passion and a tremendous amount of fun. It was a shared expression, empty without you. I thank...

G 42 Devils at Oilers

Las Vegas in the olden days must have been something else. The NHL will be expanding soon, 2 more teams are required to make things work. Among the possible cities are Toronto 2.0, Quebec City, Las Vegas, Seattle, Kansas City. The old KC Scouts are in town tonight.Steve Tambellini could help this team by adding a veteran defenseman now. I understand the hope is that Ryan Whitney...

Eberle Update to Come

I'll remember the day Jordan Eberle was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers. Wall to wall grin and as we roll along it's a good starting point for the current cluster. Today or tomorrow or a week from now the Oilers will tell us how bad his current injury is and how long he'll be gone. Eberle's loss is a big one, and of course injuries are beginning to become a prominent...

Half Time Stats

Who's Zoomin' who? Which of the Oilers young forwards is delivering the best season in 11-12? How much is RNH's 5x4 worth? There are many in the Oilogosphere better able to answer these questions, but the old man would like to have a lash which can also serve as a mid-season reference. Everything here is courtesy Gabriel Desjardins and his brilliant work at behind the...

Total Recall

The Edmonton Oilers have recalled Gilbert Brule, Magnus Paajarvi and Ryan O'Marra from Oklahoma City. We can imply a few things from this transaction, including the fact that Teemu Hartikainen and Josh Green didn't impress enough in their latest cup of coffee. We await news today on Jordan Eberle's injury, and there's a chance Brule won't get through waivers.

Rookies

Despite appearances, the Edmonton Oilers are relying far less on rookies this NHL season. The huge number of rookies from a year ago are still developing but at least the pace of new hires has slowed to a more normal rate. 11-12 Rookies (TOI)Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 658Corey Potter 549Anton Lander 395Lennart Petrell 282Colten Teubert 182Alex Plante 32Teemu Hartikainen 27Ryan O'Marra...

Sail On, Sailor

We did this a couple of weeks ago but the Oilers road trip, injuries and zero talk about an Ales Hemsky extension get us here. The Oilers will be active from now to the deadline. Book it.INJURYThe road trip was a disaster on all levels, but losing RNH, Gilbert and Eberle is especially cruel. Edmonton sent down Teemu Hartikainen and Josh Green after the game and it's reasonable...

G41 Oilers at Stars

You can see the Oilers future on display every time they play. Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and on it goes. A 220-pound Finn winger is trying to wiggle into the everyday lineup and said player has some nice things. Is there room? Who goes?Teemu Hartikainen is 220 pounds of mad Finn, and as he showed last spring the young man can impact the game down low and in...

Jordan

This is beginning to get serious. Jordan Eberle--gap toothed man child from the flatlands--is finding the upper reaches of the NHL's scoring charts. Jordan Eberle is an emerging player, in that zone between "damn he's going to be an NHL player" and "stand back, I don't know how big this thing is gonna get!"JORDAN'S PROGRESS5x5/60: 3.24--first on...

G40 Oilers at Blues

We're reaching the midway point of this NHL season and lots of things are coming into view. There are many predictable things--Detroit, Chicago and Vancouver are at the top of the western conference standings and Jordan Eberle is in the top 10 in scoring. The Oilers spent a decade without a "first shot scorer" and now they're falling out of the sky. Taylor Hall can score goals in...

OKC sends three to the All-Star Game

Phil Cornet, Alex Plante and Yann Danis have enjoyed solid seasons so far in the AHL with the OKC Barons. All three will represent the Barons at this year's All-Star game. Cornet would have to be considered the biggest surprise, after all it was uncertain what role he'd play in the organization this season. Plante has had his best season in the AHL, and his last year and a half in...

The Nuge is Out, All over Town

The Nuge is out "indefinitely" according to this tsn report. There's no timeline for return, but he'll apparently miss at least 3-4 games. This vague information is similar to the Oilers handling of RNH's "will he stay or will he go" status during the period when he was eligible to be returned to junior. For Oiler fans, one of the few remaining feelgood stories on the team is RNH...

G39 Oilers at Sabres

My goodness Gilbert Perreault was fun to watch. He could go end to end and deke the entire roster before potting a goal. He could score off the rush with his slapshot, he was a sublime passer and a stickhandling wizard. Buffalo began their franchise with "the franchise" and didn't stop there. This is the French Connection. L-R Rick Martin (they used to play up his name...

G38 Oilers at Hawks

This is Phil Russell. He was a star as an Edmonton Oil King and was drafted by Chicago and enjoyed success in the Windy City. Edmonton's connections to Boston (Sather) and Detroit (all the old time Flyers like Bucyk and Ullman) are stronger, but the Chicago-Edmonton hockey story intersects from time to time. This lineup is from sometime between 1963 and 1965, because Len Lunde...

RE Revisited

Back in the summer I wrote several posts attempting to peg "reasonable" for this edition of the Edmonton Oilers. Let's have a look and see how things are progressing. Going into year 2 of his Oilers coaching career, we expected coach Tom Renney to line match more and to have more bullets every night. I estimated a solid improvement in GF/GA:2010-11 actual: 193-269 (-76 goal diff...

G37 Oilers at Islanders

The New York Islanders of the Torrey-Arbour era were formidable. Quality, depth, skill and a massive mean streak, the club had impact players who were complemented by a large group of role players. Although Bill Torrey didn't invent the trade deadline, he famously used it to put his team over the top in 1980. It didn't take a long time for the Islanders to win. Their first...

The Lesson of Corey Potter

The Edmonton Oilers have some depth issues on defense. That isn't news, hell the summer of 2006 was a long time ago. I'm wondering about so many young defenders on the current 6. Smid-Gilbert is a veteran duo, and after that it's a lot of inexperience (Peckham, Petry and Teubert) and minor league experience. I'm wondering if it might be an idea to grab another AHL...

Hand Jive

Every once in awhile there's a Tony Hand story to remind us of the legend. Last time he got a lot of news was three years ago when Hand was approaching 4,000 career points (!!!!!!!!) at the age of 42. The British Hockey League (it's been called all kinds of things) has improved over the years, but Hand remained at the top of the scoring charts well into his 30s.Hand is from Edinburgh...

G36 Oilers at Wild

Small victories are big steps. The Edmonton Oilers have some maturation on defense and youngsters learning on the job in Edmonton and in Oklahoma. As with all of these things, you never know about specific players but (as they say) if you throw enough on the wall some will stick. The Oilers fanbase would have loved Jim Dorey. Seriously. He played the game in black and white with...

I-35 Update

The OKC Barons lost last night, but there is good news on the pro prospect front. Last night in the middle of the first period, two young Barons rang shots off the post. Magnus Paajarvi--in OKC to find his confidence and some swagger--hit iron and then Teemu Hartikainen--back after missing 10 games--did the same. "We had great chances, it's just one of those things that...

(Last Chance for) Hearts of Stone

As the reality of another lost season grips fans of the Edmonton Oilers, the time has come to talk of "next year": the draft, the men who offer hope and finally a defensive pairing worthy of the Oildrop. I've long since given up on hoping for some kind of grand intervention by Oilers management for this season. Ryan Whitney's in real trouble, things are unlikely...

G35 Oilers at Canucks & WJ Day One

The Oilers have faded in the NW standings, but remain one of three teams with a positive goal differential. A closer look reveals a lot of what the Oilers are about is the powerplay. Oilers 11-12 are 59-65 at even strength, 28-23 on the PP and 4-3 on the PK. The powerplay has been outstanding at home--19 goals leads the league and the 24.4 home percentage is 2nd in the entire league...

Merry Christmas

It's early, a little before 7. Kids are asleep, my wife is snoring (don't tell her, she doesn't think she does it) and it's just the dog and me. We got the dog about a month ago from a nice family in Legal, it's a ******/Pom we named "Ziggy" and she's the cutest kleenex box I've ever seen. The kids think we got her for them, but the truth is that it's been a tough year for my wife...

She Talks To Angels

The World Juniors take center stage beginning on Boxing Day, and Oiler fans are going to have to check the schedule and programs. There are four Oiler blue to keep an eye on. Oscar Klebom got a look at things and "talked to Tambellini" while playing a solid game for Sweden against the Canadians last night. Klefbom looked good to me, he was on what looked like the third...

RNH and his Rookie Season

Lots of talk on the Al Gore lately about RNH and his even strength and road numbers. Before we get too far into this, let's not start a witch hunt. NO ONE is suggesting he isn't an outstanding player, no one is implying he isn't the Calder favorite. Let's look at the issue of road points and even strength points. Even strength pointsRNH is killing it on the powerplay--I don't know...
