The Falcons Look to Right the Ship vs. 49ers
Atlanta Falcons: 2 - 1
Game time: 4:15pm
Eastern
The Falcons return from
their bye week to face the surprisingly tough San Francisco 49ers,
their second road game in a row. Their last trip, up to Foxboro to
take on the enigmatic Patriots, did not go so well. That loss sits
especially poorly with me, because it came against a team that did
not look very good. Tom Brady was...

Preview: Falcons at Patriots, Gillette Stadium
Tom
Brady hasn't lost back-to-back games in nearly 6 years. The Patriots
are nearly undefeated when the visiting team is playing for the first
time in Gillette Stadium. Wes Welker is out. So is Jerious Norwood.
Matt Ryan and Thomas Dimitroff are both making homecomings of sorts.
The Falcons are battling to continue their season-long winning
streak. The Patriots are battling...

Week 1, Falcons roll on the Fins
Dolphins
7, Falcons 19
Falcons record: 1-0
The Falcons open the 2009
campaign with a decisive victory over fellow upstart, the Miami
Dolphins. The expectations of the Falcons defense was high coming
into the game, while the expectations for the defense were quite low.
During the preseason, the defense, especially the secondary,
struggled to control the wide receivers of all of...

Pregame Parallels, Dolphins at Falcons Week 1
"We really haven't accomplished
anything. We got to the playoffs, which is a great thing, but our
expectations for ourselves are bigger than that," says Matt
Ryan, regarding the Falcons' surprise 2008 season and the upcoming
2009 season.
"What we did in 2008 has no bearing in 2009. We have a
big challenge ahead of us: to learn each other and to build team...

Falcons Milestones, Preseason
Last season, the Falcons
set for themselves several milestones to measure their performance in
a season during a season where they weren't expected to accomplish
much. Two of those were avoid losing back-to-back games and win
three games in a row. Mike Smith set what he believed to be feasible
goals and held his player to them. Much of the success of the
Falcons in the 2008...

Falcons Looking Forward to New Season
As we enter the home
stretch before the Falcons' season opener this Sunday against the
Dolphins, Mike Smith, Thomas Dimitroff and the Falcons organization
as a whole is still working to make this team better. Not pleased
with the performance of the secondary this preseason, the Falcons
have added former first-round pick Tye Hill (traded from St. Louis
for a 2010 7th round draft...

Falcons preseason record: 2-2
The end of the preseason
has arrived in inglorious fashion for the Dirty Birds as they drop
the fourth and final game-before-the-games to the Baltimore Ravens'
second- and third-string players. The final score is of little
concern compared to the way in which it was lost. The Falcons again
failed to stop the opposing...

Preview -- Ravens at Falcons, Georgia Dome
Falcons preseason record: 2-1
As the Falcons enter the
final game of the 2009 preseason, they are entering a final round of
roster cuts that must be completed by Saturday. Already gone are Von
Hutchins, who never got to show what he was capable of in Atlanta due
to his injury during the 2008 preseason, and Ben Hartsock, who was
made obsolete by the offseason trade for Tony Gonzalez...

Post Game Notes, Chargers at Falcons
Falcons preseason record: 2-1
The Wall Street
Journal released its list
of most attractive quarterbacks on Friday, and you'll never guess
who took top honors. Our own Matt Ryan is more handsome than Brett
Favre, Tom Brady, and every other starting quarterback in the NFL.
The study was based on symmetry of the face, and Matty Ice's face
came out to 99.82% symmetrical...

Preview -- Chargers at Falcons, Georgia Dome
Falcons
preseason record: 1-1
The
Falcons return home to spend the last two weeks of the preseason
playing on familiar turf. The first two games were bittersweet, with
the first string offense looking anywhere from solid to unstoppable,
and the first string defense playing good-to-solid football. That's
what the first half of tonight's game will showcase against the
visiting...

Post Game Notes, Falcons at Rams
Preseason record: 1 -
1
First, I would like to
say I am pleased with the improvements this team has made over the
last week. Though, the defense late in the game didn't look
impenetrable, they certainly looked more organized, and didn't allow
the Rams to run roughshod throughout the backfield. They capped off
the game by ending the would-be tying Rams drive by forcing...

Preview -- Falcons at Rams, Edward Jones Stadium
I have to be honest. Last week's second half debacle has rattled my faith in this rebuilt defense. The first half looked good, but depth is a concern for any team, and if the defense loses multiple starters in a game, the young backups haven't yet shown me that they can handle stepping in during a game situation.
On the other hand, it was only the first game of the preseason...

Post Game Notes, Falcons at Lions
Falcons pre-season
record: 0 - 1
It was destiny that last
year's strongest pre-season team would find a way to make a dramatic
comeback late in the game. That's a tough thing to admit, but fate
was against the Falcons today, and all in favor of the masters of
games that won't count, the Detroit Lions. Hats off to you.The
Falcons showed a lot today, both in strengths...

Preview -- Falcons at Lions, Ford Field
Ok, ok, I know it's just
a pre-season game, but I'm bouncing in my seat in anticipation. It
has been too long since we've seen these guys in action against a
real opponent (insert Detroit Lions joke here) as opposed to a
scrimmage against their own teammates. We're still a month away from
the Falcons' season opener against the Dolphins.
Here's a quick and...

Banner, Head Coach Andy Reid and Quarterback Donovan

The Holdout is Over!
Roddy White is breaking his holdout today as he and the Falcons come to terms. An undisclosed source reports to the AP's Paul Newberry that White and the Falcons have agreed to a 6 year, $50 million deal, with $18.6 million guaranteed. White is expected to be with the team for both sessions of Monday's practice.Following the injury to Harry Douglas, it is welcome relief...

the starters, I am not making arguments against players not mentioned

Summertime Observations
First, I'd like to apologize for my
absence. Over the last month-and-a-half, I've embarked on a new
employment opportunity, and am in the process of re-balancing work,
work, family and my Falcons blog.
But enough about me.
I wanted to share this link to an
amusing article. Something about the greatness of man versus the
greatness of ego.

Draft Day Spectacular
Finally! Draft day is upon us! The
Falcons started their draft early this week, swapping their 2nd
round pick from 2010 for premier tight end Tony Gonzalez. Tony G.
rounds out this already impressive offense, providing Matt Ryan with
the only weapon he was missing last season. Hartsock did a great job
blocking, but wasn't the pass-catching threat Gonzalez will be.

Falcons '09 Schedule
I'll start with the good news. The
Falcons have two prime-time games this season: Sunday the 18th
of October hosting the Bears, and Monday, November 2nd at
New Orleans. Chicago will be gunning for revenge for Atlanta's
unlikely and amazing comeback late in last season's game, and with
Jay Cutler at the helm, Ryan and the crew, and the restructured
defense will have...

Odds and Ends, April 6th
As the off season
progresses, with the exception of the signing of former Jacksonville
LB Mike Peterson, the Falcons remain silent, waiting for the draft.
Thomas Dimitroff has stated on several occasions that the team is
committed to building in the future from the draft, in the Patriots'
style. Given that, the move today, trading Laurent Robinson to the
St. Louis Rams in exchange...

A Veteran Move
The Falcons have signed
LB Mike Peterson, of Jacksonville, to a two year deal, addressing two
pressing team issues - pass coverage and defensive leadership.
With the departures of safety Lawyer Milloy and LB Keith Brooking,
the only player remaining from the Falcons' only Super Bowl
appearance in 1998, team experience came quickly into question. Of
the two elected defensive...

Moving and Shaking
The Vick-Capades
Atlanta
has opened the bidding for fallen icon Michael Vick, who will be
serving the end of his dog-fighting sentence under house
arrest. Not surprisingly, teams are reluctant to discuss their plans
either for or against acquiring Vick. Mike Singletary's statement of
possible interest, then reversal has been the only gleam of hope so
far for Dimitroff'...
