What Could Have Been For the Kansas City Chiefs
Remember 2005? Doesn't seem all that long ago - but lots of things have changed since then. We elected a new President. Personally, I've had children (thus reinforcing every parent's dream that their kids will receive offspring exactly like them - exacting some measure of revenge for tormenting my poor parents.) The economy crapped all over itself - and the war continues...

How Patient Should Chiefs Fans Be?
I'm almost over last week's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. I have almost moved on after watching my team surrender midway through the second quarter, and just try to run out the clock in an attempt to catch an early flight home. Almost. I put my Madden 2010 season on "Rookie", set the time to 15 minute quarters, and destroyed Philly 163-0 last night - so that made me...

Tyler Thigpen Traded
The Kansas City Chiefs announced they have traded backup quarterback and last year's starter, Tyler Thigpen, to their favorite trading partners, the Miami Dolphins for a conditional draft pick. Per usual, no terms were released by the Chiefs.
The Fish needed another quarterback after Chad Pennington went down for the 4,193,957 time with a season-ending shoulder injury. The...

Kansas City Chiefs Wave the White Flag
I tried something new yesterday.
My son was getting baptized, and the ceremony followed noon mass - which doesn't bode well for a 12:00 p.m. CST kickoff for the Kansas City good guys and someone who wants to watch the game. So - I set my DVR, went to the service and planned on watching the game when I got home.
(I knew something wasn't going right when, midway through the...

The Kansas City Chiefs Aren't as Bad as you Think
The Chiefs' performance against the Ravens was a pleasant surprise. I don't know if I have ever been less excited about watching a Chiefs' game than I was going into Sunday. I thought the Ravens were going to wax the Chiefs. When I heard that Matt Cassel was inactive for the game, I almost couldn't bring myself to watch the game. As the game started, I remember turning to my friend...

Chiefs' Free Agent Options: Plaxico and the "Pistol" Don't Work Well Together
Last week, I expressed my concern that the Chiefs didn't do enough to surround Cassel with enough weapons. The good news is that there are still some people in the market worth looking at. As I said previously, I normally don't approve of throwing money at free agents; however, this year is an exception--the Chiefs should bring in some veteran stopgaps so that Cassel has some players...

Jason Whitlock is Scared of Me
It doesn't take long to get someone's opinion on Jason Whitlock - he's one of the more polarizing figures in the Kansas City sports scene. Most people either love him or hate him. He's been called opinionated, contraversial, racist, insightful, and pretty much any other adjective you can think of. I would like to add one more - spineless.
A week or so ago, I wrote...

Kansas City Chiefs Offseason Report Card: Defensive Free Agency
First, let me say that I know people are expecting me to grade the Chiefs' 2009 draft. I read through my colleague Ryan Brown's article on MVN, and it pretty much says everything I need to say. That being said, I will now shift gears toward the Chiefs' defense. Let me first say that I am and always have been a strong advocate of moving to a 3-4 defense. It does concern me that the...

Matt Cassel Deserves Better Than the 2009 Chiefs
First, let me mention that I happen to really like Matt Cassel. I love his potential. I am well aware that the knock on him is that he often struggles to make his reads in a pro set offense, but I love his work ethic and I love his mechanics, both of which make me believe he will be a very quick study. I also hate that every single supposed expert and analyst railed on him for having...

Is Mike Brown the New Version of Rodney Harrison?
The Chiefs announced the signing of safety Mike Brown on Wednesday, which seemed like a surprising move, given that the team had two starters in Jarrad Page and Bernard Pollard - plus they drafted DaJuan Morgan in the 3rd-round last year. However, in retrospect, the move makes sense when considering the man who made the signing.
Back in 2003, Scott Pioli signed safety Rodney Harrison...

Anazlying the Chiefs' Draft
Hey, better late than never, right?
Since I was indisposed this year during the draft, I was unable to conduct what I was hoping would be an annual tradition - drinking beer and saying "WTF?" every time the Chiefs made a draft pick. It worked well last year, but unfortunately I wasn't able to follow up in 2009. That's sad, actually, because this was the first year of Scott Pioli...

Chiefs Offseason Report Card: Free Agency - Offense
I'm having a really difficult time grading the Chiefs' approach to free agency this offseason. On the one hand, I've always been a minimalist: I hate it when teams spend money for the sake of spending money and I despise it when fans treat average players like Max Starks and Rex Hadnot as if they were borderline pro bowl players. My theory has always been that if a player is at all...

Trent Green Retires
The Kansas City Star is reporting that former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Trent Green is retiring after having been released by the St. Louis Rams back in February.Congratulations to Trent for moving on into his post-NFL life. He was one of the best quarterbacks this town has known and I will always remember how classy an individual he was, and how well he represented the Chiefs...

Chiefs Offseason Report Card: Todd Haley and the Coaching Staff
Head Coach: As most of you know, I liked Herm Edwards better than most people did. I still believe that he was a decent head coach crippled by a GM who was in his post a few years longer than he should have been and who refused to let his team rebuild in the way Herm wanted to. That being said, I still agree with Pioli's decision to fire him. I hope Herm Edwards goes to another team...

Are the Chiefs In Good Shape? Literally, Yes.
Last year was embarrasing - for lots of reasons.
A 2-14 record. Larry Johson trying to fight half the female population in Westport. A half-empty Arrowhead. An NFL record for lowest sack total by a team with 10. Marques Hagans taking snaps at quarterback. Yeah, there was a lot to be ashamed of if you support the Kansas City good guys.
However, was was most embarrasing for...

Chiefs' Offseason Report Card: Ownership
Hey everyone. Sorry for the delay since the last post. I took a little time off, but I'm back and ready to talk Chiefs' football again. I thought it would be nice to start off with an evaluation of how the Chiefs fared this offseason on several different dimensions. We'll start today with the Ownership.Ownership: I was reluctant to grade Clark Hunt because we have yet to see how...

Is It Worth a Super Bowl Ring?
"The Japanese camp guards of World War II always chose one man to kill whenever a batch of new prisoners arrived. I always wondered how they chose the man who was to die. I think I would have been good at choosing the person." - Dwight Schrute, "The Office"
You know who else would be perfect for that position? Chiefs' general manager Scott Pioli.
We are roughly six months into...

Chiefs Fans: Tyson Jackson is a Very Good Pick!
Chiefs' fans, put the picket signs down. Picking Tyson Jackson was a great pick for the Chiefs.I know for most of you, this is a head-scratcher and I promise you that there will be a bunch of pissed off co-workers at the water cooler complaining about this pick. But those guys don't understand the basis of a 3-4 defense and I imagine many of them rely on a 4-3 draft board to determine...

MVN Draft Predictions: Who Will the Chiefs Pick? Raji or Crabtree
NOTE: Sorry to play this game with you, but while I say B.J. Raji or Michael Crabtree is the most likely candidate to be drafted by the Chiefs, I still realize they're anything but a sure-handed play.As I said in my previous article, I believe the Chiefs' best opportunity is to trade down. Mike Mayock confirmed my rhetoric that teams just aren't interested in the draft trade value...

MVN Chiefs Draft Predictions: Part 1--Draft Day Deal Options
So we have approached the one-week mark until the NFL Draft. I've laid out a position-by-position preview over the last few weeks and I hope that's given you all some idea about what the Chiefs need to achieve through the draft. This could end up being the Chiefs' most mysterious and exciting draft in history given that there are a few new sheriffs in town. However, if I could predict...

MVN Chiefs Draft Preview: Linebackers (and Why it Won't Be Aaron Curry)
I still think it's interesting that Aaron Curry is still the favorite among most mock drafts to be the Chiefs' #3 pick in 2009. I've written about this before, but let me briefly tell you why this doesn't make any sense and then go a little more in-depth. In short, Aaron Curry is a great top 5 pick if a team is running a 4-3 defense. In a 3-4 defense, Curry would be placed at an...

If the Chiefs Were the Cowboys, This Move Would Make Sense
At least, that's how the signing of Zach Thomas has been portrayed to me.
Last year, Thomas signed with the Dallas franchise and the move was heralded as a coup for Jerry Jones and the Boys.
"He'll bring leadership!"
"He's still got some gas in the tank!"
And so on...
Now, one year later (and admittedly, one year older), Thomas is a member of the Kansas...
