Schedule, Signings, and Stuff
My apologies for not writing recently. I know it's been quite a month of signings and the new schedule, so here are my thoughts as we get into the slowest part of the hockey calendar.First of all, the free agent signings by the Caps were fantastic. They did not have a lot of money to do a lot of things, especially with some big contracts they still have (Nylander/Theodore), but...

No Winter Classic is a Crock; Fedorov Gone.
I'll start off by saying I am, of course, biased. The Capitals are my favorite team. That being said, the decision to have the Flyers take on the Bruins at Fenway Park next New Year's in the Winter Classic proves yet again that the NHL is run by idiots.
Morons.
You do realize, Bettman and co., that you want to showcase the stars in your league? You realize you want something...

Ovie's Got Hart... Again!
Congrats to Alex Ovechkin for winning the Hart trophy (and the Pearson) for the second straight year. I can't express how impressive that is. After so many years of wishing that a Capital would be one of the best players in the league, I will never take Ovie for granted.
Sure, we want the big prize. Ovechkin said as much during his acceptance speech for the Hart. He said next...

Now What? (Fedorov Leaving?)
After a week of reflection and frustration (we could be the team crushing Carolina), it's time to take a look at what's next for the Capitals. Deals will be made and players will be leaving. What should they do? Here's what I think:
1). Re-sign Sergei Fedorov (for the right price).
He may not be the player he once was and it helped that he missed 40+ games this...

Not Our Time.... Yet.
Not much I can say right now.
That pretty much sucked. The Caps were outplayed somewhat during the series, but fought real hard and were able to get to Game 7. They were outplayed pretty badly in Game 7 and that's why the season is over.
The one thing I hope the team takes out of this playoff run is that they have to play as a team. They need to trust each other more and...

Caps Survive... Bring On Game 7!
I have to admit. I had no faith. As a lifelong Caps fan, I have seen it so many times before. The bitter disappointment after Saturday night was an oh-so-familiar feeling. Any Caps fan can tell you that. It was almost a sure thing that the Caps would not be able to survive and win Game 6. After all, these are the Capitals.
But maybe they are not.
Maybe these are not the old...

Cursed!
I have been a Caps fan since birth. I have watched almost every playoff game they have played in their history. We have to be the unluckiest team in the history of the NHL. How teams like Tampa and Carolina win Stanley Cups while the Caps hit posts and have overtime shots go in off their own guys is just beyond heartbreaking.
Sergei Fedorov made a great poke check on the winning...

NHL Gets Wish; Series Tied
I know I'm biased, but come on now.
You can't tell me that there isn't an agenda by the refs. For the first 30 minutes of the game, the Caps were playing 5 on 7. After scoring in the first minute of the game, the Caps had the momentum and could have silenced the crowd and the Pens. Then Chris Clark bumps into somebody... whistle!! The entire context of the game was changed...

Pens Dominate; Series Now 2-1
What can you say?
The fact that the Caps were even in overtime was a miracle. The Penguins were a desperate team and they played like it. The Caps were a team up 2-zip in the series and they played like it. Instead of the back and forth excitement of Games 1 and 2, the Caps sat back and were beaten to pretty much every loose puck all night long. They were out worked all night...

Caps Up 2-0; Crosby Whines... Again
Once again, this series is living up to all the hype. Luckily for Caps fans, it's going our way... for now!
What more can you ask for? Alex Ovechkin with his first playoff hat trick. Sidney Crosby with his first playoff hat trick. Simeon Varlamov with another amazing performance in net and the Caps with a 2-0 series lead headed to Pittsburgh.
Now, this was huge for the Caps...

Caps Strike First; Lead Pens 1-0
You always say, it's nice when you don't play your best and still win. That was our Capitals on Saturday afternoon in Game 1.
Don't get me wrong. I think they played well, even great, at times, but 22 giveaways and allowing countless odd man rushes will not get it done in this series. You know the Penguins will be better in Game 2 and let's hope the Caps are as...

SWEET REDEMPTION!!!
11 years of frustration looked like it was going to be 12 years of frustration. The Caps came out flat and were outplayed for the first 40 minutes. But the goaltending of Simeon Varlamov kept them in it and the old man got it done in the 3rd. Who else put Sergei Fedorov could have come though with such a huge goal? What a shot and what an atmosphere at Verizon Center. I wish I...

Brashear Suspended 6 Games
Wow. 6 games? Can you say 'track record'???
While I expected Donald Brashear to be suspended for Game 7 on Tuesday night, I did not expect such a lengthy one. The AP story explains it like this:
Brashear is being punished Monday for two separate actions -- one before and one during Washington's 5-3 victory in Game 6 at New York on Sunday. He was suspended for one...

Bring On Game 7!
Here we go again!
What a wild series this has turned out to be. The Capitals and Rangers; John Tortorella and the Caps fans are building quite a rivalry. In another impressive performance, the Caps whooped up on the Rangers for the second straight game and for the second year in a row have a chance to win a Game 7 on home ice to win their first playoff series in 11 years. 11...

1 Down, 2 To Go
I'm frustrated.
What a great performance the Caps had on Friday night in a must-win Game 5. But I'm frustrated because I wonder where this type of effort was in the first 2 games of this series. I just don't get how this team does not seem to put it all on the line until they are one loss from elimination.
They put themselves in a very tough situation where one...

A Familiar Situation
Well, here we go again.
Like last year, the Caps slow start to a playoff series has them down 3-1 to a team they are better than. Not much better, but better.
For the 1,000,000th time, the Caps are likely going to be done in by a red hot goalie who has played out of his mind. Can the Caps ever be the team that has that goalie? I'll give you 1998 where Olie had some amazing...
