Firing First Base Coach Jose Cruz Is THE Key To Turning Around The Astros
Yeah, sarcasm. I'm getting good at it.
Drayton fired, uh, I mean, "reassigned" all of the Astros coaches except for Dave Clark and Sean Berry, the hitting coach. I was sorry about the latter and hoped that maybe Drayton would put out the bucks to hire Jaime Cevallos, who turned Ben Zobrist from Eric Bruntlett to almost MVP. At the very LEAST, perhaps he could have...

Brad Lidge Saves Consecutive 1 Run Games To Help Phils Win NLDS
Yeah, I know it is not Astros news, but I like Brad.
It has been a postseason of Closers Who Fail - and interestingly enough, Brad, who has had, uh, his share of struggles this year, has come through, unlike Papelbon, Huston Street and Ryan Franklin.
What's that old Stones song - When The Whip Comes Down...
Got an, um, interesting comment purporting to be from "Jack Zduriencik...

Astros Top Prospects For 2010 And A Few Words About Jim Fregosi
Top Prospect Alert has beaten Baseball America to the punch and named the top 10 Astros Prospects and yes, I KNOW they really REALLY had to look long and hard to think of 10 of em. Just because you sign all the guys you draft doesn't mean that the guys you drafted were all that. This year, especially, pretty much all guys signed almost immediately (and there were no guys who...

Reviewing the 2009 Astros Relief Pitchers
In this entry I am going to evaluate pitchers who ONLY relieved and had no starts (the guys who swung both ways are going to get their very won entry.)

In Which The Astros Manage To Score 2 Runs vs The Mets Over 3 Games And Unsurprisingly, Lose Them All
Or, to put it even more succinctly, When Nelson Freaking Figueroa pitches a 4 hit, no walk shutout against your ballclub, you ball club is, to put it nicely, absolutely terrible.
Well friends, sorry no posts this weekend, but I've been sick with whatever virus from heck the kids thoughtfully brought home from skool. The greatest truth on earth is that the ONLY thing that kids...

Berkman And Tejada Propel Paulino To His First W Since June 27
Paulino had 5 starts and gave up 2,2,1,4 and 8 runs - and had exactly 2 runs of support in the first 4 of those games. In his last start of the season, his teammates FINALLY kicked through, Miggy driving in 3 and Lance driving in 2.
Paulino needed 110 pitches to go 5 innings, but he slogged his way through, giving up 2 doubles, 4 singles and 3 walks, striking out 5 and giving up...

J.R.Towles Smashes TWO Homers Off Pedro Martinez
The other day, I wrote an entry which said "man bites dog."
Today's entry should be subtitled "newborn baby bites killer pit bull."
No matter what happens to Towles in the future, he will alsays be able to relish the day he hit TWO homeruns off one of the greatest righthanded pitchers of all times.
Interesting because the first homer was originally ruled a...

Dave Clark, Cecil Cooper = Same Guy
Well, tonight's game showed why I wrote "Coop" in last night's entry when I should have written "Clark." Second verse, same as the first.
He pulls Bourn because we're facing a lefty - nevermind that Bourn hits leftys VERY well and puts Jason Michaels in center - might as well put Clank in center. He won't let Chris Johnson, Maysonet or Manzella...

Miggy Tejada Supports Bazardo As He Outpitches Hamels
Yorman Bazardo outpitched Cole Hamels.
I can't believe I am writing that, but it is true. So I am gonna say it again: Yorman Bazardo outpitched Cole Hamels.
Yorman threw 5.2 innings, gave up only TWO hits - a leadoff single to Rollins (which led to a run) and a double to Victorino which SHOULD have been an out, but it bounced off the first base bag and took a bad hop and Berkman...

#51 Wandy Rodriguez Wins His 51st ML Game And The Astros Have A Wining Record At Home For 2009
The last baseball game of the year here at home, another meaningless game, except for Wandy, my favorite Astro, on the mound, but I said to myself, it IS Wandy and after all, you won't be able to go to another baseball game until next April, so out we went - Brother and the kids and me. Husband was SUPPOSED to go, but he said - Baby, I'm too tired. I should have been suspiscious...

Paulino Pitches Badly. Miggy Goes 4/4 But Astros Lose To The Reds Again
It didn't start off so badly. Paulino got through the first inning on 12 pitches, giving up only a double to the LF bullpen to Votto.
Then Bourn led off with a single and promptly stole second. Miggy hit a single through the 5.5 hole. And there we are, men on first and third, no outs, Berkman and Lee coming up. What could be better, right? Well, Lance hits a bullet to first,...

Miguel Tejada's Noodle Arm Exacerbates Brian Moehler's Lousy Pitching
Moehler wasn't exactly sharp in the first, needing 6 pitches to K Stubbs, 6 pitches to get Janish to FO to Bourn, throwing 6 pitches to Votto before he golfed an inside sinker into the RF stands.
He was even less sharp in the second - struck out Bruce, then gave up consecutive singles before getting Hannigan to ground out. Then with men on second and third, he got 2 quick strikes...

Bud Norris Breaks Losing Streak As Astros Defeat John Smoltz For The First Time In Over 10 Years
And no, I have no idea when the Astros last defeated Smoltz, but it was 1998 or earlier as the Yahoo game logs only go back to '99. And the Astros have never defeated the guy in the postseason. EVER.
Sometimes, things just don't turn out the way you think they will. Bud Norris didn't have great control of the strike zone and seemed to overthrow at least half of the fastballs...

Astros Pitchers Continue Triumphant Slide Into Supreme Suckage
Well, why not start off with what little good news there was from this embarassing game:
1 - Michael Bourn hit 2 changeups and, in fact, hit the second off the RF wall. 5' higher and it would have been out. He almost managed to catch another ball on the Hill, but it fell for a triple and I was disappointed that Oquendo didn't allow Ankiel to keep running to earn himself an...

Wandy Gets No Help From Defense, Pitches Lousy And Loses
This was his first bad game in a month, and, in fact, his first lousy home game.
sigh
I can't even begin to tell all yall how disgusted and disappointed I was when I looked at the lineup and saw the same old same old. Second verse, same as the first. Or should I say - won't get fooled again. So much for taking a look at the young guys.
And same old crap with the defense...

Cecil Cooper FINALLY Fired As Astros Manager!!!!!
I was driving in my car with kids being (reasonably) good lil kids, when I turned to the AM radio to check on the traffic, got the news and what did I hear?
Drayton McLane, unhappy with the 0-6 road trip, finally decided to fire Cecil Cooper.
I screamed YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! so loudly I shocked the kids into dead silence - why youda thought Ah had done won me a date with...

Brewers Sweep The Astros As Bourn Takes The Golden Sombrero
Good:
1 - Pence took 2 walks, didn't swing at even 1 bad pitch, got a single, and SHOULD have gotten a 3rd walk, only the HP ump was unusually biased in favor or the other team and called Ball 4 Strike 3
2 - Astros got 4 walks and 6 hits, 4 of them doubles
3 - Miggy hit into his NL league leading 29th double and only needs 4 more in the next 2 weeks to break his ML record. He...

Pence Hits HR #24 And Moehler Gives Up Only2 Runs And Doesn't Win
Got an email from a Brewers' fan I know at the beginning of the game. He said that Cooper gave an interview in which he said that Geoff Blum was angry that he wasn't playing against Suppan because he has great numbers (15 fer 28 with 2 HR, 4 doubles and 3 walks) but he "had" to play the young guys.
And Coop is telling this to the Milwaukee media like WHY??? It makes...

The 2 Pitches That JR Towles Doesn't Catch Cost The Astros
Yeah, unfortunately, it's true.
Well, that and the hitters not hitting with MOB and Coop pulling his usual assinine leftylefty thingy and it backfiring as usual.
Lance Berkman hit a 400' homer righty in his first game back after missing a few with back pain (it's going around, hunh.) Lance always said he had a better righty swing and when he hits a homer hitting righty...

For The Second Time This Year The Astros Hit 5 Solo Homers And Lose
Cooper likes to put his players in a good position to lose.
This was one of the worst major league games I have EVER had the misfortune to watch. And I didn't even bother to watch after the end of the 6th - I KNEW the ending already.
Bazardo gave up a lot of HARD hit baseballs, 2 homers a 5 more really hard hit balls, 3 of which were caught. He has a rather mediocre fastball...

Cooper's Stupid IBB Strategy Earns Sammy Gervacio His First Loss
AND his first earned run in 4 WEEKS
I honestly don't know why I bother to watch any more, except to hope that Coop makes even more stupid decisions so he'll be fired, because I'll tell all yall straight, if he is not gone, along with the crappy other coaches, I'm quitting until Drayton wises up.
When your team can't beat Kip freaking Wells, they flat out suck...

Cooper Mismanages The Bullpen AGAIN And Reds Beat Wandy
I would say I was stunned when I saw Wandy hitting at the top of the 7th with the Astros leading by barely 1 run because Wandy looked to me as if he'd thrown his last 3 good pitches to get Phillips at the end of the sixth.
And I was right - he started Rolen off with 3 balls, got a gift strike from the ump, then things went from bad to worse. Rolen walked and Gomes doubled. Gervacio...

Paulino Gives Up One Run And Pirates Break Their 14 Game Away Losing Streak
Paulino had an interesting game - lasted 5 innings, gave up 6 singles, 7 K, 1 walk and 1 run. He had all his pitches working, but tended to overthrow a LOT. He went to SEVEN 3-2 counts then gave up 3 singles, 2 FO, 1 K and 1 walk - and the pitches thrown for the 3 singles and 2 FO were mid-plate, high in the strike zone. Of the 58 pitches he threw which were strikes, 16 were swing...

Astros Beat Ohlendort On The One Bad Pitch He Threw
Ohlendorf has gotten better since we last saw him. He set the Astros down in order 1,2,3 for the first 3 innings and retired Bourn to start the 4th when Matsui, singled on a push bunt down the first base line, deftly avoiding the tag. Lance flied out, then Ohlendorf made his ONLY bad pitch - he hung a slider to Carlos and the ball ended up right about on the tracks.
Moehler, who...
