Joining the Fun @ Five For Howling
When I first started this site back in 2006, I just wrote to exercise my love of writing and sports. Naturally, after adopting the Phoenix Coyotes as my favorite team, it morphed into a Coyotes blog.
Writing was and still is fun.
What’s cool about keeping a hockey blog is the people who I get to meet on a virtual basis. Hockey people are the best people I have come in contact...

Reviewing and Applying The Code
I keep pushing this book because it truly changed the way I view hockey games. In fact, if I read this book around 2003-04, I would have understood the tragic events that plagued the game.
We know that event and I really won’t go into much detail except to serve as a reference point for later.
The book in question is a book written by Ross Bernstein and is titled The Code...

Making Sense of the Logjam
When the boys over at Five For Howling were kind enough to have me participate in their roundtable discussion last month, one of the subjects was what number would it take to qualify for the playoffs. I pegged that number at 95, maybe 97 and that was on past experience.
Since the lockout, the number of points required to qualify for the playoffs hovered around 90 – 96, with...

There Will Be Blood
I don’t like the term “goon” or “enforcer”. I like “policeman.”
Marty McSorley NHL Live
First, my apologies to Paul Thomas Anderson for the title.
Yesterday afternoon, Dave Strader had one of the ultimate enforcers on NHL Live as they covered Wayne Gretzky’s fantasy camp in Las Vegas and we got some unique insight to his views about the nature of the current game...

Superbowl XLV
I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We lived there until the early 80s as my parents despised the cold and wanted to move to warmer weather. Dad worked for the Federal Government and received a transfer to an Air Force base on the east coast of Florida. So, they sold the house, packed up our stuff, and moved us to a place where 70 degree weather was common during the month...

Every Game is a Playoff Game
The Western Conference is just a mess. Looking at the standings right now, the Coyotes hold the eighth spot one point away from the Blackhawks and tied with their opponent the Minnesota Wild. One point behind Anaheim and Colorado (currently playing right now as I write this) and two points behind Nashville.
You could go down the list and see that Columbus, all the way down at...

A Microcosm
Microcosm: a miniature representation of something, esp a unit, group, or place regarded as a copy of a larger one
That’s how I viewed the game against the Greasers Tuesday night. Because the next day there was talk about failed deals, experts outside of Arizona opined wildly about how our bond markets work, people with microphones in other northern locales...

Hockey Sales
I had another topic in mind today, and it will have to wait until this weekend. It will still be appropriate – even if the Coyotes prevail against the Avalanche later tonight. But the arena atmosphere last night took on a metaphorical quality that I will extrapolate in detail. Anyway, today “news” broke about people who are experts in municipal bond markets...

The Skating Enforcer
Hockey does not have true enforcers any more because if they can’t skate or play, they become a liability on the ice – especially in the salary cap era of the NHL.
I have written this before that Paul Bissonnette should play in every game. The last time I opined such a thing was back in December when the debacle took place.
However, from what I saw from section 106...

Tin Foil Hats and Other Perspectives
Thursday was an exciting game played by two division rivals, the Phoenix Coyotes and that other team.
That other team, the Peasants, want to qualify for a playoff spot while the Coyotes are trying to hold their position. As advertised it was a tightly checked, goalie showcase where defense matters most.
Right in Dave Tippett’s wheel house if you ask me.
Martin Hanzal scored...

A Reckoning
Other teams that face the Coyotes should be very concerned right now.
They are winning and they are playing with a bit of a snarl.
They are righting the wrongs that have been inflicted upon them by others and by themselves.
Since December 23 in that Pennsylvania city that is not Philadelphia, they have posted a 8-4-2 record, with a unbeaten streak in regulation standing at eight...

Regression to the Mean
When stocks get overvalued, the market “corrects” itself moving the numbers to the true value. Holders of that stock freak out in the short term, because their assets diminish, quite quickly, and panic can set in.
The overvalued housing market ran so hot that its correction will still take many more years to add back the true value of the property. Houses that only...

Another View of the Winter Classic
The Washington Capitals beat the flightless fat birds 3-1 in the Winter Classic.
I only know this because I read it this morning; I didn’t see the game last night.
Wait, what? You mean I, a passionate hockey fan, did not see the preeminent game of the season, second only to the Stanley Cup Playoffs?
ZOMG!!!!!1!!!1!1one
Yeah, I didn’t see it. I’m pretty tired...

Missed Opportunity
We’re going backward.
It’s not completely the Coyotes’ fault. Jaroslav Halak stood on his head so that his team could weather the first period storm.
Then, during the second and most of the third period, the storm was over and it was a peaceful experience on the ice for the Blues as they scored four goals.
And then, all of the sudden, with less than two minutes...

Scoreboard Watching: Game 37
If the playoffs started today, the Coyotes would be going home. They are ranked 10th in the conference, and at one point this season, they led the division.
After some games they should have won, and going 4-5-1 in their last ten, the decisive win against Los Angeles was more important than ever. Tonight if they are able to earn two points, they will be able to gain ground on...

On Life: One Fan’s Perspective (Non-Hockey)
Today’s Disclaimer: If you are one looking for a hockey related article today, I’ll apologize in advance; this one is only indirectly tied to the sport. This one is primarily for me, so if you don’t want to read it, that’s fine, you can move along and I’ll see you later – no hard feelings.
However, if you do read it, thank you for allowing...

More on the Debacle
I’d encourage everyone to read the definitive book on the code in hockey entitled: The Code: The Unwritten Rules Of Fighting and Retaliation in the NHL That book was an endless source for me and changed the way I watch hockey.
We all know that hockey has the elements of supreme coordination combined with violence and hard hitting collisions. The officials cannot stop it...

A Debacle
From my cheap seats (read, my couch in my living room) I had a bad feeling that the points the Coyotes squandered would bite them in the ass. Unfortunately, I should have bought some lotto tickets because my feeling was dead on.
For the first ten minutes, I had hope. The flightless fat birds lost two in a row, and even though they would be well-rested, the Coyotes had started...

Random Missive
Soon, this East Valley Resident is headed to the West Side to catch his first hockey game of the season, but before I go, I have semi-random thoughts to share:
First, it’s becoming clearer that the Phoenix Coyotes are going to get a new owner. That’s great news to the relatively small but loyal legion of fans down here in the valley. But what about ticket sales, what...

My View of the Lightning v. Coyotes
I tried to come up with some catchy title, but alas, I had nothing.
I know that Yotesgurl is clearly upset with the recent trauma that the Coyotes have inflicted upon themselves lately, and I can completely understand. In fact, I get it. If you go back through my archives a little bit, this pain is nothing new to me.
The only thing that is a concern is the Jekyll and Hyde tendency...

Coyotes Must Be Ready Tonight Against Lightning
I won’t belabor the point that others have made regarding tonight’s game against the Lightning. You can find the links over at Five for Howling.
What I will say though is that if they thought the team from the mid-western state East of Wisconsin was fast, the Lightning has speed also and they are dangerous.
New head coach Guy Boucher has his Lightning squad playing...

DiSH Network v. Fox = Collateral Damage
Through Twitter, @TheYotesDiva shared with her followers this press release.
In short, three, of which tonight’s Coyotes game against the Ottawa Senators is one, will not be televised here in the local market via NHL Center Ice.
Essentially, because DiSH couldn’t negotiate their way out a paper bag, they decide to take the ball and go home. Usually, I don’t care...

More on Hitting in the NHL
The NHL has made its presence known about head shots in the NHL – especially the “textbook” cases that Brad Harold loved to opine about last week which sent Shane Doan to the bench.
However, in reviewing the NHL last night, I came across this hit on Teemu Selanne by Kornball:
I remember hits like this…take a look at a playoff game where Scott Stevens levels...

Howling at a Full Moon
With the recent weirdness around the NHL lately, I could only determine the cause to be a full moon – sorta – I mean, it’s not quite a full moon, but close enough.
Let’s look at the situations that have surrounded our game lately.
First, Shane Doan gets more than enough punishment for his hit against Dan Sexton of the team on the western coast that is not...

The Doan Situation
First, let’s get my biases out of the way.
I hate the Ducks. They operate on bullying tactics when trying to compensate for their shortcomings, but to their credit last night, they kept themselves together.
Next, I like the Coyotes and if I were a hockey player, I’d kill to play for a captain like Shane Doan.
Finally, I have looked at the hit, considered the situation...
