North Carolina the Team to Beat in 2011-2012
With the next national champion set to be crowned in approximately 365 days, everyone wants to know who the team to beat in 2011-2012 will be.
I’ll go ahead and throw out something obvious: It’s not Connecticut and it’s not Butler.
The team to beat next season on paper is North Carolina. Star player Harrison Barnes says he is leaning towards returning to school...

Connecticut Wins National Title
Connecticut is your 2011 NCAA Basketball champion.
The Huskies beat Butler 53-41 on Monday night to win head coach Jim Calhoun his third national title. The Bulldogs had the worst shooting performance (12 of 64) in the history of the national championship game. Nine of Butler’s twelve made shots were three pointers.
Kemba Walker had 16 points and 9 rebounds and was named the Most...

Women’s Tournament Nears Final Four; Tennessee Out
Pat Summitt and Tennessee have gone three years without a NCAA title.
Stanford reached the Final Four as a one seed in the NCAA Women’s Tournament on Monday night. Tennessee did not.
The Volunteers are like Duke and North Carolina’s men’s teams combined into one squad when it comes to ladies basketball. Pat Sumitt’s girls rarely lose a game, especially in the NCAA Tournament...

Sullinger Returning to Ohio State
A few days ago Ohio State freshman Jared Sullinger announced he was returning to Ohio State. Sullinger would’ve likely been a top five pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.
Sullinger’s decision means the Buckeyes will likely be the team to beat in 2011-2012. Although Ohio State loses David Lighty and Jon Diebler, they do return (unless they decide to leave early) junior William Buford...

The Great Story of this Year’s Flawed Final Four
Let me start by saying, I love the NCAA Tournament more than anyone. When I say that, I realize I sound like any other male that has two hands enabling him to fill out a bracket and a 42″ HDTV, but I truly mean it. I celebrate March Madness as if it is a one month celebration of Christmas, with gifts coming in the form of last second buzzer beaters, stunning upsets, and ripped...

Boynton doesn’t practice, expects to play
Florida guard Kenny Boynton did not practice on Monday, but is still expected to play on Thursday against BYU. Boynton lit up the Cougars in last year’s meeting in the NCAA Tournament and he’s expecting to draw the assignment of guarding do-it-all scorer Jimmer Fredette.
“We fully expect him to play,” Florida head coach Billy Donovan said. “I’m still a little bit cautious...

Big Chance for VCU, Richmond, & Even FSU
Joey Rodgriguez and VCU are two wins away from the Final Four.
Every few years a mid major team has a chance to prove that it plans on staying on the national stage. Gonzaga has done it because the Zags have been as consistent as any team in the country over the last decade. Butler has done it by reaching the Final Four last year and by knocking off Pittsburgh this season. George...

The Best of Day 1 of the NCAA Tournament
Connecticut and Florida: Congratulations on making the NCAA Tournament UCSB and Belmont, now please proceed back to your respected universities. The Huskies and Gators stepped on the accelerator from the get-go and made these games blowouts. Chandler Parsons and Kemba Walker had fantastic games and at halftime fans of these two teams could start looking ahead to round three.

Gonzaga Beats Saint Marys, Earns Auto Bid
Gonzaga has done it again.
The Bulldogs beat Saint Marys on Monday night to win the WCC Tournament and clinch an automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament, which showed even in a down year Gonzaga has the tools to get to the Big Dance.
Many other teams also clinched auto bids on Monday night. Wofford upset Charleston to win the Southern Conference auto bid, St. Peters won the MAAC bid...

Gonzaga-Saint Marys battle in WCC Final
Robert Sacre and Gonzaga are one win away from the NCAA Tournament.
All season it looked like Gonzaga may miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time in recent history, but the Zags have responded with an eight game winning streak that has them in the WCC Conference Tournament Final.
Meanwhile, Saint Marys was anointed the team to beat in the WCC with Gonzaga’s struggles, but now...

The Madness is Starting
One thing is certain in college basketball: The regular season is over and things are about to get crazy.
Actually, the craziness may have already begun.
Although it isn’t obvious to the casual fan, there have already been many upsets in smaller conference tournaments. Coastal Carolina, a team that ran through its conference and finished with a 28-5 record, likely will not be headed...

Florida-Alabama Will Decide SEC Title
Florida and Alabama are both 11-3 in the SEC, but are in completely different positions in the race for a NCAA Tournament bid. The Gators are expected to grab a top five seed when the field is announced on Selection Sunday, while the Crimson Tide’s fate is still in doubt.
The Gators have went 11-3 in the rough, tough SEC East and have backed that record up with good victories out...

Kansas State Playing Its Way Into the Field
Jacob Pullen and Kansas State continue to play themselves into the NCAA Tournament field.
Remember a few weeks ago when it looked like Kansas State was going to go from a preseason top 5 team to the NIT? Remember a few weeks ago when it looked like Texas might run through the Big 12 without losing?
Forget about both of those ideas.
The Wildcats knocked off Texas on Monday night,...

Bracketology: February 22nd
The teams on the bubble should be ashamed.
The last five teams in my newest bracketology are all decent teams, but none of them deserve a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Alabama, the same Alabama team that I wrote just last night was likely out for now, is in and they aren’t even the last bubble team in. No, instead that honor goes to Gonzaga, a team that seemed destined for the...

The Strange Case of Alabama
Living in Alabama, I can tell you the first thing you learn about the Crimson Tide athletics department is that football is all that matters. People literally live based on how Alabama fares on the gridiron and after that little else matters. In fact, softball may be the number one sport discussed in the state after football. Sure, baseball gets a little attention. So does gymnastics...

Bracketology: February 18th (Morning)
As I wrote the other day, sadly I have not been able to update my bracketology on a daily basis like I normally do each season. The good news is: I’m back.
This year’s NCAA Tournament is shaping up to be one of the most open ones in recent history. Sure, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Texas, Kansas, and Duke appear to be the favorites, but since this is the tournament in the new 68...

Kansas Loses Less Than 24 Hours After Becoming No. 1
Kansas was atop the AP and USA Today polls on Monday morning for the first time all season, narrowly edging out Texas for the top spot. Around twelve hours after reaching the lofty number one ranking, Kansas State star guard Jacob Pullen made sure it didn’t last.

It’s Been A While…
I haven’t been able to update my bracketology/college basketball blog nearly all season because of school and work. My time is the one thing I do not have enough of, but I do have good news: I will updating my NCAA Tournament blog and projections through the rest of the season!
My first bracketology will be posted in a few hours.

Power Rankings: Ohio State Jumps Up to No. 2
It’s not easy to do power rankings early in the season. While some schools are playing cupcakes, others are playing tough competition. That combination makes it very difficult to fairly rank teams. When you throw in preseason expectations along with results and strength of opponents played, its easy to see that creating rankings this early on in the year is a very in-exact science...

Maryland’s Turnovers Early a Big Problem
Often, you will see teams struggle early on in the season with turnovers. Take a team like Maryland for example. Greivis Vasquez was the Terps primary ballhandler the last few years and found ways to keep the team in games they should’ve never been in. Without him, Maryland was expected to struggle a little bit with handling the basketball.
Maryland survived Charleston on Wednesday...

Preseason Power Rankings: Duke the Easy Top Choice
1. Duke Blue Devils (0-0): The loss of Jon Scheyer is going to hurt this team more than most casual fans realize. He had only 14% of the Blue Devils turnovers last season despite being the primary ball handler. Let’s see if Kyrie Irving can live up to his high expectations and be as effective as Scheyer was at point guard.
2. Michigan State Spartans (0-0): Tom Izzo has a knack...

Previewing Thursday Night’s Games: Could Charleston Test Maryland?
After Tuesday night’s scare from a game Rhode Island squad, No. 4 Pittsburgh takes on Illinois-Chicago in the Panthers second game in three days. No. 16 Illinois and No. 25 Texas also take the floor as ranked teams for the second time in three nights, as does unranked Maryland.
The Longhorns might’ve been the most impressive team on Tuesday night after rolling Navy. The Illini...

Tennessee loses exhibition to DII school
Last four college basketball season officially kicked off with four games in the 2K Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Thank goodness, no more exhibition games to talk about. Wait, an exhbition game is still the main story the night after games that count are played? How is that even possible?
Well, that’s what happens when a ranked team like No. 20 Tennessee loses to DII Indianapolis...
