Branch Finds Fountain of Youth at Patriot Place
Who said you can’t go home again? To be frank, I didn’t really think much of acquiring Deion Branch and trading away Randy Moss. On paper, it looked like a total downgrade at the position with the team only gaining a net move of one round up in the 2011 draft with the picks exchanged in the respective moves. After a few days of letting it settle in for a few days, I decided...

A Rolling Stone Might Gather No Moss, but Zygi Wilf Might
Back to the past?
Out of the Bizzaro World Department, Randy Moss is reportedly headed to Minnesota, pending a contract extension with the Vikings. This comes one day after a zero catch performance at Miami that probably helped motivate his requests further to get out of Foxborough.
Currently being reported is Moss being exchanged for a 3rd round draft choice in the 2011 NFL Draft...

Globe Writer’s Criticism of Tom Brady Is Unwarranted
Sometimes newspapers blow my mind.
After the Tom Brady car accident last week, there was a report by the Boston Globe featuring the family of the injured man in the van that hit him saying, “We aren’t getting any attention and it’s because Tom Brady is famous.”
Right…because it was one of your family members with seven pages of moving violations that was the victim here...

Maroney to Denver Quicker than any of his Carries
Late this afternoon came what seemed to be the inevitable – Laurence Maroney is no longer a Patriot. Word coming from ESPN’s Adam Schefter the Patriots sent Maroney and a 6th round choice to Denver for a 4th round selection all coming in next year’s draft.
Early word out of Foxboro from the Boston Herald’s Ian Rapoport is that Maroney confronted Belichick after Monday’s...

Tom Brady Deal “Imminent;” Moss’ Turn Next?
As reported by the Boston Herald this morning, the Patriots and Tom Brady have worked out a possible deal that would pay the franchise QB roughly $19 million per year for the next 3 seasons.
There currently isn’t a figure listed for guaranteed money and no confirmation that Brady has agreed to those terms either, but he is expected to do so by tomorrow.
It is definitely a reassuring...

Secondary Concern now a Focal Point – Bodden to IR
First, it was the Mankins holdout and Kaczur going through back surgery to deplete the O-line. Then it was losing Ty Warren for the season to hip surgery that takes a big piece from the D-line. Now here comes another big blow to the secondary. Cornerback Leigh Bodden was placed on injured reserve today during roster cuts, finishing his 2010-11 season before it started. Bodden had...

4th and 2 – Patriots-Rams Preseason Primer
Recently I had a chance to exchange some thoughts with Will Horton of RamsHerd.com on four topics leading up to tonight’s game with St. Louis. In keeping with the same theme, I’ll be running out four Patriots related topics to be watching for as well. We’ll finish up with two players to keep an eye on, one from each side of the ball.
Let’s start with the Pats:
1. Patriots...

Old News – Torry Holt should be the last washed-up wideout the Patriots sign
Take a step back in time to Super Bowl XXXVI when the Patriots took on “The Greatest Show on Turf,” aka the St. Louis Rams.
In that epic matchup, a standout third-year receiver from NC State was involved in one of the more notable plays of the game. He slipped off the line, allowing none other than O-T-I-S Smith to grab an interception and take it 30 yards to set up a Adam Vinatieri...

A Hip-check to the Pats’ D-Line
If there weren’t enough problems with the offensive line trying to plug holes. The defensive line just got quite a bit lighter losing Ty Warren for the season. He hits the injured reserve with a reported torn hip labrum, which we’ve learned more about since A-Rod and Mike Lowell. The list of potential replacements that are currently rostered is lengthy and pretty underwhelming...

Takeaways from Pats-Saints Preseason Game
It wasn’t the prettiest display of football last night, but hey, isn’t that every preseason game in a nutshell? The starters play a few sets, and give way to the guys who are trying to make the cut or take the next step up in their career. Overall, I think that both teams showed a little offseason rust that training camp hasn’t blown off yet, but by Week 1, we should see a...

Training Camp: Day 1
Happy Patriots Day, my friends! With the first day of workouts completed, there are already a number of news items coming out of Pats camp to keep fans interested.
Shawn Crable was injured before camp started. In other news, the sun rose in the east this morning. Seriously, what a waste. This guy was the prototypical outside linebacker in Belichick’s system. There is...

Should Wes Welker Start Training Camp on Time?
Reports surfaced over the weekend that Wes Welker will be cleared to fully participate in training camp when it opens on Friday. My question is: should he? If Welker’s knee is fully healed and strong enough to handle playing wide receiver in the NFL, it is a bit of a medical miracle. It was just over seven months ago that Welker tore the ACL and the MCL in his knee. Generally...

Are You Ready For Some Football?
To NFL fans, the beginning of July means only one thing: NFL training camp is less than a month away. If you’re a Pats fan like me, you cannot wait for Brady and the team to get back on the field after last season’s disappointing playoff exit.
The Patriots have announced part of their training camp schedule and have five practices that will be open to the public:
Thursday,...

Peter King Thinks The Pats will Miss the Playoffs
Recent Boston native, Peter King, did a way-too-early ranking of NFL teams this week and put the Patriots at #14 and on the playoff bubble in 2010. He ranked both the Jets and Dolphins to be better teams than New England next season. I am not going to point out how wrong Peter is in his assessment of the Patriots team. I am biased towards the Pats and will always rank them...

Patriots Offseason Links
We are now in the dead season of the NFL calendar. The NFL Draft is over, the big name free agents have signed, and training camp is still a few months away. Still there are some nuggets of interest coming out of Foxboro to keep Pats fans entertained:
Tom Brady spoke to Dennis and Callahan and opened up about the changes in his life off the field, the 2009 team, and what he...

Patriots 2010 Draft Recap
Now that we are a few days past the NFL Draft, everyone has had time to digest and evaluate the new Patriot players in their own way. Some people will say the Pats missed in the 1st round by selecting a glorified special teamer. Other people will say that the Pats addressed several areas of need but still did not come away with a sure-thing to improve the pass-rush. I believe...

Pats Trade Down, Select Devin McCourty in the 1st Round
After trading out of the 22nd and 24th picks in the 1st round last night, the New England Patriots finally settled at pick #27 and selected Devin McCourty, a cornerback from Rutgers. Here is a scouting report on McCourty:
McCourty isn’t the flashiest corner coming into the draft, but his under-the-radar status will be enough for him to be a blessing in disguise for any organization...

Patriots 2010 Schedule Released
In one of the most overrated events of the NFL calendar, the NFL schedule was released live last night on the league’s network. We all knew who the Pats opponents would be in 2010 months ago, but the powers-that-be in the NFL have now put the official dates on paper. You can look at these teams now but teams change so much from year to year that no one really knows how good...

Ho-Hum Jets Add Another Player with Questionable Character
Another week, another player with off-the-field issues is brought in by Rex Ryan ad the New York Jets. This time it’s Santonio Holmes from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Listen, I am not going to sugarcoat it – the addition of Holmes and Antonio Cromartie this offseason make the Jets look very formidable on paper. However, lets stop planning the parade through the Canyon...

Belichick Courting Tim Tebow
The Boston sports world has been abuzz over the last few days with the news of Bill Belichick, Nick Caserio, and Tim Tebow spotted having dinner together in the North End this week. Patriots backup Brian Hoyer then confirmed the meeting today saying that he spoke with Tebow when he was in town. My thoughts – Belichick is either helping a friend out or he has lost his mind. ...

Don Banks Mock Draft 4.0
Well well well…look who is coming over to my side of the street. In his latest mock draft, Don Banks has the Patriots selecting none other than Sergio Kindle at number 22. I said it before and I’ll say it again, I don’t think Kindle will be there at #22 but if he is, I think he will be a Patriot.

Pats Resign Bodden and Faulk
The Patriots continued their offseason plan of locking up their own this week by resigning Leigh Bodden and Kevin Faulk. In typical Patriots fashion, they evaluate and keep their own and avoid spending big on veterans in the free agent market. Bodden was a solid contributor for the Pats on defense this year. Although not a lock-down corner, Bodden did a good job lining up against...
