The Final Post
Dear Readers,
After 7+ years, I’m putting ScalpEm.com into “Archive Mode” and, for all intents and purposes, closing the site. No new content will be added in the future. After many years of blogging about the Noles, it’s time for me to move on to other formats. Where can you find me in the future? You can find me on Twitter. It lets me interact with all of...

Jon Loesche Checks In For Spring Football
With Spring Football almost finished, I thought it would be time to once again come out
of hibernation. There has been plenty talked about for Florida State’s 2011 campaign.
The Sept 17th game vs Oklahoma has already been circled as another “Is FSU back
moment”, while the tin foil hat crowd thinks the ACC is out to get the Noles with the
schedule.
So what is it? Can Jimbo Fisher...

Jordi’s ScalpEm Farewell
Many moons ago, in the days of yore, ancient cavemen made their mark on the walls of caves. They carved what they did, what they thought, and what was happening to them over however long they were in the cave. Some cavemen marked for years, some for months, and yet others maybe only left one marking. And while some died in their caves, others moved on to other pastures.
And so...

FSU’s Season Ends
Moments earlier Chris Singleton pumped faked getting his man in the air and drove the ball in along the right baseline for the slam dunk giving Florida State a 71-70 lead.
Seven point nine seconds remained in overtime. That is all that separated Florida State from their first appearance in the Elite Eight since 1993.
All the Seminoles needed to do was to hold VCU on the inbound...

Monday Morning Quick Thoughts
Although I don’t watch much basketball, I’m very happy for the Noles and Coach Hamilton. Perhaps some of the people that like to scream for his head all of the time will shut up now? Probably not, but for a program that will always be 2nd fiddle to the football team and viewed as a mid-tier ACC team, he’s doing a great job. Who’s a better value than Coach...

Sweet 16 Bound!!!!
It’s not often you see a smiling Leonard Hamilton after a game even when it is a win. But after a near perfect performance Hamilton had plenty of reason to grin from ear to ear after Florida State manhandled Notre Dame all game long in beating the Fighting Irish 71-57 to reach their first Sweet 16 since 1993.
Lower seeds such as a ten seed that Florida State came into the NCAA...

FSU Moves On in the NCAA
When the pairing of Florida State and Texas A&M, two teams noted much more for their defensive prowess than their offensive capabilities, was announced last Sunday, fans and pundits quipped that the first team to fifty would win the game.
That proved to prophetic.
With 2:28 left in the game, Bernard James swatted away B.J. Holmes layup right into the hands of Ian Miller who promptly...

Noles Sweep Boston College, Tough Week Ahead
I made it out to the Saturday blowout, but watched the Sunday game from the confines of ScalpEm.com headquarters. Tallahassee provides some of the most pleasant baseball weather you’ll find anywhere in the country, especially this time of the year. That will probably last about another 2-3 weeks and then it’ll be hazy, hot and humid until November. Weather aside, the...

Seminoles Baseball Tops Boston College 3-1
Now THAT’S my kind of game!
Scheduling has kept me away from the last few games down at Dick Howser Stadium, but last night was I was back and it was one of those nights that I love as an old-school baseball fan. I was never a fan of the 15-14 “gorillaball” scores, so a 3-1 night where Sean Gilmartin was pretty much lights out and the Noles had one big rally to...

Heartbreak
What looked to a dagger of a shot to Virginia Tech turned out instead to be a dagger to Florida State.
Derwin Kitchen’s jumper from inside the arc along the right baseline was a millisecond too late leaving his finger tips. Instead of a game winning shot that saw the FSU bench rush to Kitchen to celebrate, the referees determined after several minutes via replay that the clock...

FSU Holds Off Wolfpack
Florida State has been invited to the Big Dance aka the NCAA tournament. Well, not officially anyway.
But after holding off North Carolina State, 72-62, getting that highly valued eleventh conference win, the
Selection Sunday show next week will just be a formality. The only suspense for FSU will be what number seed and
where to.
Erasing Wednesday’s loss to the Tar Heels and building...

FSU Manages To Hold On Against Georgia
Over his three years facing Georgia, Sean Gilmartin has made a habit of owning the Bulldogs. Friday night was no different as Gilmartin recorded a career high 11 strikeouts allowing just one hit and no runs over his eight innings of work.
However, as brilliant as Gilmartin was, Brandon Johnson and Daniel Bennett were the exact opposite nearly blowing a six run lead only to hold on...

Seminoles Pass First Test of the Season
Florida State got all the runs they needed in the third inning and then got stellar pitching from Daniel Bennett and Mike McGee to hold off #1 Florida 5-3.
The Seminoles got their first hit of the game in the top of the third inning when Justin Gonzalez lined a single to center. Devon Travis the smacked a ground ball just inside the third base line for a double.
After Sherman Johnson...

FSU Starts Strong, Holds Off Miami
This season Florida State was 16-0 when leading at the half. And that trend looked like it would continue as the Seminoles thoroughly dominated the Miami Hurricanes over the first thirty minutes on both ends of the court.
Then came the second thirty minutes.
Leading by twenty points at intermission, 36-16, Florida State saw its lead nearly evaporate on a barrage of circus like three...

Lessons Of A Seminole Baseball Fan
Here are some random thoughts from my head regarding FSU Baseball:
FSU Baseball will frustrate you at times, but overall it’s not worth complaining about teams that win so many games each season. Face it, you could be a Mets fan and really suffer.
Mike Martin is frustrating at times, but not nearly as frustrating as some would like to claim.
The first base side of Dick Howser...

Are M&Ms inherently anti-Seminole?
Over the years I have convinced my Dad to wholeheartedly throw his allegiance to FSU. Before I was a Seminole, he could have overlooked college sports without a care. Now he is a diehard supporter.
The other day I received a very strange email from him. He sent me a forward of an email he sent to the M&M candy people in which he asked why there were so few red and yellow M&...

FSU Falls to Maryland, 72-68
Too little offense and not enough defensive stops when the Seminoles needed them resulted in Leonard Hamilton’s seventh consecutive loss at Maryland, this time falling to the Terrapins 78-62.
But more so was the lack of defense by FSU in allowing the Terps to shoot 52% with freshman Terrell Stoglin leading five Terrapins in double figures with 17 points.
“That was not typical...

FSU Whacks Wake, 84-66
The big question coming into Saturday’s game against Wake Forest was how Florida State would perform in its first game without the injured Chris Singleton.
For the first 10:24 it appeared like the answer was not very well. The Seminoles had five turnovers, were 2 of 12 from the floor, and trailed the Deacs 14-6.
That’s when Hamilton called a timeout. And whatever he said in the...

FSU Baseball Opening Day Is Tomorrow!
Last weekend, I was a happy man. FSU Softball is back in action for 2011. This week, I’m happy too, because FSU Baseball opens their 2011 season against VMI tomorrow at 4PM down at Dick Howser Stadium. I’ve been going to baseball for years, and there’s not a better value for a ticket in town. As a baseball fan, you get a high level team each year and a chance to...

2011 FSU Football Schedule Is Out
Lots of people are whining about the 3 days between N.C. State and at Boston College. Same with Clemson on the road following the OU game. My feeling is that it’s really not that awful of a schedule and they have to play what’s dictated anyway. Welcome to the world of ESPN dictating a lot of schedules for TV ratings. If you want TV money, you end up with schedules like...

Roller Coaster 2011 Start For FSU Softball
What an interesting weekend.
First off, I was happy that I was able to attend all 5 of Seminole Softball’s games this weekend. Granted, it wasn’t always pretty, but it’s a rare occasion that I get to stick around for all of their games in any given weekend. Many times, baseball plays at the same time and I walk over there if for no other reason than I had to pay...

Observations from Georgia Tech
After Sunday’s debacle in Chapel Hill, Florida State wanted to win this game. And they played like they really wanted it jumping out immediately to a 20-4 lead. The Seminoles never looked back after that holding off Georgia Tech who closed the margin to seven on a couple of occasions but never really threatened.
The best quote after the game came from Michael Snaer. “...

2011 FSU Softball Starts Friday
As most of you well know, a large part of my FSU fanaticism involves the softball and baseball teams in addition to the football team. I love all of my Noles, don’t get me wrong, but I have a passion for those three sports mainly. Since football season is long over, and the hoopla that so many follow call National Signing Day is past us, it’s time to enjoy the upcoming...

The Morning After UNC
Why FSU lost the game: Too much Kendall Marshall. While Derwin Kitchen had an OK game (6 assists, 3 turnovers, 12 pts), the difference of having a true point guard clearly showed. Kitchen is what he is. That is not his fault. Leonard Hamilton decided long ago to go with a combo guard at a crucial position in a league that is known for point guards. That does not appear to be changing...

Remember that Butler team that beat FSU in Hawaii?
Don’t look now but the Bulldogs have lost three straight and four of their last five. Those are all Horizon League conference games they have lost with their record currently at 14-9.
Baylor (14-7) who we did beat is tanking as well losing four of their last six.
All that adds up to Florida State’s RPI dropping to 58 per Real Time RPI.
That is danger territory in terms...
