Tar Heels Secure Tough Road Win

Harrison Barnes and Kendall Marshall combined to score 18 of No. 20 North Carolina’s final 19 points, including a thunderous dunk by the former and a steal and transition basket by the latter, to overcome a late deficit as the Tar Heels defeated Clemson, 64-62, on Saturday. Observations from Littlejohn Coliseum

John Henson’s difficulties are the free throw line are well documented so it’s ironic that after making a 3-pointer against Clemson he’s shooting better from beyond the arc (50 percent) than from the foul line (38 percent). Henson has only attempted two 3-pointers this season which is probably fine with coach Roy Williams.

Green: Tar Heels' youth steps up for tough win

Tucked into the corner of an elevator taking him upstairs to a post-game visit with his grandson, UNC basketball coach Roy Williams had what passed for a satisfied look on his face in mid-February. Three days removed from an emotional loss at Duke, Williams had just watched his Tar Heels scrap out a 64-62 victory over Clemson in dangerous Littlejohn Coliseum.

Harrison Barnes, Kendall Marshall lead UNC to win at Clemson

If Harrison Barnes is the Black Falcon, Milton Jennings was the field mouse he was swooping down to feast on. UNC's freshman forward threw down a ridiculous dunk over Jennings with three minutes to go that turned the tide the Tar Heels' way in a 64-62 win against Clemson. "It definitely gave us a little momentum and took the crowd out of the game," said Barnes.

Lucas: Ill Intentions

Harrison Barnes...went up, and he moved the ball to his right hand, and he kept going up, and suddenly he was violently slamming the ball over a helpless Milton Jennings. There have been times he has been content to be on the perimeter. This was not one of those times. This one had ill intentions.

UNC-Clemson preview

UNC is clearly a different team with freshman Kendall Marshall at the point. While Marshall got his first start in the Clemson game, fellow point guard Larry Drew’s departure has made them Marshall’s team, and they have responded with a much more cohesive effort and up-tempo style.

Chris Hanburger worked his way to Hall of Fame

As a two-way football player at UNC from 1961-1964, Chris Hanburger often expressed his displeasure with a game that required so much energy and seemed to give little in return but pain. "I never saw a guy who hated football so much play so hard and play so well," former UNC offensive line coach Joe Mark said. "He used to say, 'What am I doing playing this game...

Butch Davis says he learned from adversity of 2010 season

UNC coach Butch Davis spoke about defensive line play for 90 minutes Friday at the Nike Coach of the Year Clinic. He could have talked all day about dealing with adversity. Last season, much was expected of a Tar Heels team filled with NFL-quality talent. But injuries, an investigation into improper benefits, and an issue involving tutors forced freshmen into significant playing...

Clemson hoops looking to pay back North Carolina

Not that a reminder was necessary, but Clemson coach Brad Brownell certainly took notice of the tents popping up outside Littlejohn Coliseum the past couple of days. Tar Heels confident after strong showing in Duke loss

Turning the page to Clemson and Saturday's third road assignment in four games, North Carolina should encounter another challenging environment. Clemson’s Littlejohn Coliseum never will be mistaken for Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium — where the Tar Heels succumbed Wednesday night after bolting to a 16-point lead — but the Tigers’ den typically gets rowdy when the league’s...

Dexter Strickland still getting the point

Entering today's game at Clemson (1 p.m.), freshman Kendall Marshall has deftly played most of the ball handling minutes in 20th-ranked UNC's last two games. But the player affected the most by Larry Drew's departure just might be Dexter Strickland - the starting shooting guard who now must also serve as backup point guard and top perimeter defender.

North Carolina hopes to bounce back from loss to Duke

Roy Williams had less than 72 hours to pick up his players' spirits. The Tar Heels couldn't hold a 16-point lead in Cameron Indoor Stadium and lost 79-73. Even Williams looked drained after the loss. And now, another game away from home and in front of a hostile crowd. North Carolina has won three of its past four games in Clemson's Littlejohn Coliseum, but lost 83-64...

Tar Heels must focus on Tigers, not loss to Devils

Even though No. 20 UNC led the fifth-ranked Blue Devils by as many as 16 in the first half and then kept within striking distance until the final minute, the Tar Heels still missed an opportunity to take first place in the league. But UNC doesn't have much time to dwell on the loss to its arch-rival, as the Tar Heels play Clemson, which is fourth in the ACC, today at Littlejohn...
