Bryce Harper injuries himself after awful game
Washington Nationals rookie outfielder Bryce Harper has a very divisive personality, but his outburst on Friday is something that all fans will agree was completely stupid of him to do.
In the midst of an 0/5, three strikeout game tonight against the Cincinnati Reds, Harper took out his rage on the Nationals dugout, smashing the side of it with his bat after striking out in the...
Series Spotlight: Braves at Cardinals (May 11-13)
The defending World Champion St Louis Cardinals are the class of the National League, and all of baseball, on May 11th. Their 20-11 record is just half a game behind the Rangers for the best mark in all of baseball. More importantly, the Cardinals have a +75 run differential, which is seven better than the Rangers and 51 better than the Braves in the National League. Coincidentally...
Dugout Digest - Colby Lewis, and infamy
Colby Lewis of the Texas Rangers had a very strange game yesterday, in the first game of a doubleheader between the Rangers and Orioles. Rangers starter Colby Lewis allowed five hits, six runs, one walk, and struck out a career-high 12. Of course, each of those five hits was a homer. Lewis was the first player in nearly 100 years to allow five homers along with ten strikeouts in...
Angels' catcher Chris Iannetta to miss 6-8 weeks
The hits just keep on coming for the Los Angeles Angels: catcher Chris Iannetta will require surgery on his wrist, and will miss 6-8 weeks. Iannetta was plunked on May 2nd (the day of Jered Weaver's no-hitter), and after three days off, attempted to play through the injury. It didn't work. Iannetta had a .706 OPS on the season with three homers.
Here's the bad news for...
Blue Jays sign Vladimir Guerrero to minor league deal
The Toronto Blue Jays have quizzically signed former Angels (and more recently, Orioles) DH Vladimir Guerrero to a minor league deal, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. The deal is worth $1.3 million, and will be prorated for his time in the majors.
The 37 year-old Guerrero looked pretty much done last year in Baltimore, posting just a .733 OPS, along with a career low 13 homers...
Could the Phillies be sellers?
In an interview with Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro had a startling revelation: that the team actaully could be sellers at the trade deadline this year.
“July is so far ahead,” Amaro said. “We just have to get on track. But if July comes and we’re playing like this, we’ll be sellers. How we play now will determine whether we’ll be buyers or sellers...
It might be time to rethink this whole closer thing
If there is one overarching theme to the 2012 season so far, it is that closers are dropping like flies. By my count, 13 different teams have already replaced the closer they intended to start the season with and we aren't even at the quarter pole yet. Based on the reaction of most fans, losing a good closer is like losing a vital organ and being stuck with a bad closer is...
Albert Pujols throws glove at Erick Aybar
After last night's 6-2 Angels win over the Twins, as the Angels are doing their postgame handshakes, shortstop Erick Aybar taps first baseman Albert Pujols on the elbow. Pujols proceeds to whip his glove at Aybar, and looks really, really irritated afterwards, inspecting his elbow. It's worth noting that the elbow that Aybar tapped was the one that Pujols has had problems...
Low-Level Highlight: Archie Bradley
We're only about a month in to the 2012 season but if the performance of so many first rounders is proof positive enough, it could go down as an all-time great class. The reason was due to pitching depth that was basically unheard of. But what's funny is that considering the pedigree of this week's selection, it's interesting that many believe he is overlooked...
Dugout Digest - the ugly National League
While looking over some scores from today, I realized something: last year's National League playoff teams have had a slow start out of the gate. Except for one, of course. The Diamondbacks and Phillies, both of whom won their divisions and lost in the NLDS, are currently 14-18. Arizona sits in third, 6.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West, whle the Phillies are last in...
Dugout Digest - Josh Hamilton
What more can I say about Josh Hamilton that hasn't been said by everyone on Twitter and mass media outlets? He went 5/5 with four homers and a double last night, setting an AL record with 18 total bases. Just for the hell of it, Hamilton drove in eight runs too. Perhaps ironically, all of Hamilton's homers were two run shots that scored Elvis Andrus. Huh, imagine that...
Dugout Digest - the mystical Lance Lynn
Quick trivia: who leads baseball in wins? It's not Jered Weaver. It's not David Price, Jamies Shields, or Madison Bumgarner. It's not Johnny Cueto, Justin Verlander, Jake Peavy, or Felix Hernandez. No, the MLB leader in wins is...Lance Lynn of the Cardinals, who is 6-0 with a 1.40 ERA. It's funny, though. Despite his undefeated record, microscopic ERA, and nearly...
Series Spotlight: Rangers at Orioles (May 7-10)
Getting this one up a little late today due to the extremely busy news day....sorry about that. By the time you're reading this, the first game in the series will have already begun (and possibly concluded), so we'll see how accurate my analysis is pretty quickly, right? Anyway, there is a very weak slate of games going during this week. There are a total of four series between...
John Lannan, the Phillies, and ignorance
I'm normally a very tolerant man, especially when it comes to beat writers, who as a whole, say some really stupid things. In the light of the Cole Hamels-Bryce Harper beanball sitaution from last night, Phillies beat writer Kevin Cooney (PhillyBurbs.com) tweeted one of the most ignorant, unsubstantiated things I've read in quite awhile. And coming from a guy that follows...
Cole Hamels suspended five games
The Cole Hamels-Bryce Harper beaning incident already has a conclusion: Hamels has been suspended five games by the MLB and fined an undisclosed amount. So essentially, Hamels is being fined and having his start pushed back a day for admitting to throwing at someone.
The lack of consistency here from the MLB confuses me. Ubaldo Jimenez hits Troy Tulowitzki this spring, denies it...
Guillermo Mota suspended 100 games for PED use
Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports is reporting that San Francisco Giants reliever Guillermo Mota has been suspended 100 games for testing positive for clenbuterol. This is Mota's second suspension under the MLB's drug policy. His first suspension came after the 2006 season, when Mota was with the Mets, and sidelined him for the first 50 games of the 2007 season.
Clenbuterol...
Rockies' Chacin declines AAA assignment
Last Wednesday, the Colorado Rockies demoted starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin to AAA Colorado Springs. Today, the Denver Post is reporting that Chacin had not reported to Colorado Springs yet, and wasn't planning on it.
Before the All-Star break last year, Chacin was performing pretty well. He had a 3.16 ERA in 116 2/3 innings, striking out 101, walking 50, and allowing 15...
Minor League Monday: So...Now What?
I have no Bryce Harper or Mike Trout to even ode to. Enjoy picture(s?) of Taijuan Walker.
Your Top 10 Minor Leaguers
1. Dylan Bundy - RHP, Low-A Delmarva (BAL) - 5 GS, 17 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 25/2 K/BB - He pitched on Monday and finally allowed his first hit AND allowed a walk, but has still not gone past four innings yet in any of his starts. This happens a lot at the Low-A level...

Nationals GM blasts Cole Hamels
Mike Rizzo on Cole Hamels saying he deliberately plunked Bryce Harper: "I've never seen a more classless, gutless chicken [bleep] act in my 30 years in baseball."
Dugout Digest - Latos has landed
Mat Latos has had a pretty crappy run in Cincinnati so far...well, up until yesterday. Latos through six shutout innings against the Pirates, allowing two hits and three walks and striking out 11 in the process. Latos only has thrown one other shutout appearance thusfar this season, two starts ago against the Giants. However, that start was much less impressive, due to the only...
Should Cole Hamels be suspended for hitting Bryce Harper?
During last night's Phillies-Nationals game, Phillies starter hit Bryce Harper in the back on the first pitch of the at bat. Harper would later get the last laugh as he'd come around to steal home in the inning. In a post-game interview, Hamels actually admitted that he was attempting to hit Harper, and it wasn't just "a ball that slipped away from him". Matt...
Nationals' Werth has broken wrist, will be out "awhile"
Washington Nationals right fielder Jayson Werth has a broken left wrist, reports Nationals beat writer Amanda Comak. He's expected to miss a significant amount of time.
Werth's injury comes at an awful time for the Nationals, who just called up Bryce Harper to fill their gaping hole in left field, caused by the injury to Michael Morse this spring. With Morse still out...
VIDEO: Bryce Harper steals home
This is pretty awesome. Cole Hamels hit Bryce Harper in the first inning, and Harper moved up to third on a Jayson Werth single. Hamels threw over to first to check on Werth, and as soon as he released the pitch, Harper made a beeline towards the plate, and slid in safely. You can say what you want to say about Harper's attitude and how the media portrays him, but there is...
Albert Pujols finally homers as an Angel
May 6, 2012: a day that will forever go down in Angels history. This is the day where Albert Pujols hit his first home run with his new team. You can check out a video of it here.
Of course, this isn't a cause for celebration. It's a homer. He'll probably hit at least 30 more this year. But for a player who was getting maligned by Angels fans, the media, and fans across...

Chipper Jones rips Moyer, Phillies
Chipper Jones ripped Jamie Moyer for accusing him of stealing signs and said that Moyer is probably paranoid because his old team, the Phillies, is known for doing it.
