The Hair speaks: Kiper has Lions taking 1st round linebacker, thinks Denard Robinson is a great WR
Mel Kiper, the original NFL draftnik, now ESPN mouthpiece, has posted his first 2012 mock draft.
Before I go forward, let me remind you I hate mock drafts (even more so when they are posted in January insetead of April), and find the heavily coiffed Kiper more of a used car salesman type and master self-promoter than "NFL expert." But when he talks draft, for better or...

Housekeeping: Stop SOPA and PIPA
This is a non NFL/Detroit Lions post, but please bear with me.
You may have noticed I create a ton of internet content by my involvement with my own site, TWFE, along with Bless You Boys, The Bless You Boys Podcast and The Knee Jerks Podcast. Which is why the ongoing push by Congress to enact SOPA (Stop Internet Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) legislation scares the bejebus...

Matthew Stafford wins PFW Comeback Player of Year, aka Miss Congeniality
Despite throwing for 5038 yards and 41 touchdowns, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford wasn't named All-Pro or even to the Pro Bowl. The best he could do was being named a lowly Pro Bowl 3rd alternate. (Yet the NFL media wonder why Lions fans carry an eternal grudge) To long suffering Detroit fans, Stafford's snub felt like a kick in the nuts, showing a lack of respect for his historic...

Drew Sharp: Megatron can be replaced. Lions fans: Are you serious?
In today's Detroit Free Press, the Freep's resident contrarian hack for pay, Drew Sharp, gave his opinion on the contract status on the Lions' most talented player, wide receiver Calvin Johnson. He declares the Lions need not pay Megatron because wide outs are easily replaceable in comparison to other positions.
This is the example Sharp uses to defend his opinion:
Tim...

The Lions Congregation: Post playoffs
Roar of the Lions hosts the Lions Congregation, a weekly roundtable featuring those of us in the Lions blogosphere answering questions supplied by both Joshua (aka DetFan1979) and readers of the congregation. If all goes well, the Q & A goes live every Friday evening. I'll post a link to this week's post when it goes live.
This week: Post playoff thoughts

Lions keep coaching staff intact, avoid playing coordinator bingo
Today, Lions' General Manager Martin Mayhew announced there would be no changes in the coaching staff for 2012.
Via Dave Birkett of the Freep:
General manager Martin Mayhew said today the Detroit Lions have re-signed all three of their coordinators: Scott Linehan, Gunther Cunningham and Danny Crossman.
Mayhew went on to add:
With Linehan (offense), Cunningham (defense) and...

Calvin Johnson to miss the Pro Bowl, leaving Lions without a representative
If Lions fans had just one reason to watch the worst All-Star game in sports...the reason is not going to be in attendance.
Via ESPN:
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White will replace Detroit's Calvin Johnson in the Pro Bowl, the NFL announced Wednesday.Johnson, an All-Pro selection for the second straight season, led the league in receiving yards (1,681) but withdrew...

What happens when you give the completely clueless a column?
You get mainstream media articles from "HUGE" Bill Simonson spewing incomprehensible tripe. For his latest trip into the absurd, see:
Why Detroit Lions, Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers will win championships in 2012-13
Simonson also predicts the Wolverines and Spartans will share the Big 10 basketball title, the Wolverines will finish 10-2, the Spartans 9-3, one...

Aaron Berry learned a lesson tonight: Never tweet when you're angry
One thing I learned eons ago is to never post anything online when you're angry. Odds are, you'll write something you'll live to regret.
A member of the Detroit Lions obviously hadn't learned that lesson yet. This is a tweet from Lions' corner Aaron Berry in reply to some upset Lions fans.
First off, I can't emphasize enough just who stupid it is for fans to troll...

Stafford: "We'll be back"
The full Matthew Stafford quote: "It was a learning experience, we'll learn from it, we'll get better, we'll be back."
Video via the gang at Detroit4Lyfe:
Stafford says all the right things, and even though he's using platitudes...I believe him. Hard to believe the kid is only 23 years old.
The Lions have some holes to fill, but for the first...

Detroit Lions @ New Orleans Saints - wild card: 2nd quarter running diary
Word on Twitter from the beat writers is Chris Houston is injured and in the locker room. Smith taking over at CB. The Lions need all hands, depth is always an issue.
Saints face 3rd and 2 from the 3. Sproles inside hand off, bounces off the line, dips to the outside...and scores.
7-7 with 14:01 left in the half.
Well, I knew the Lions weren't going to hold the Saints...

Detroit Lions @ New Orleans Saints: Wild card pregame thoughts
We're less than an hour out from the Lions' first playoff game in 12 years and the first in the history of The Wayne Fontes Experience. Suddenly, I'm a tad sentimental. I had to take a quick look back.
The first post on TWFE V1.0 was 6 years ago this week, on January 3rd, 2006. And what do you know, I completely forgot my own blog's anniversary!

Lions in the playoffs: Looking back into order to move forward
The Lions are playing well, in the playoffs, found a franchise QB, have an epic offense, and talent on defense. I believe big things are in their future.
I honestly think the Lions have a solid shot at knocking off the heavily favored Saints tonight. Playing on the road, it would be an upset, but not the "ZOMG, the earth must have fallen off it's axis" most would make it out...

I want to believe
Over lo these many years, I've come to realize Lions fans aren't all the same. There are several types of Lions fans, and they are coming out of the woodwork on the eve of the franchise's first playoff game in 12 years.
1. Fans (if you can even call them "fans") so angry, so pissed off, so unforgiving, they want the Lions punished indefinitely for their past sins. Theses fans...

Joshua, aka DetFan1979 of Roar of the Lions, has brought back the Lions Congregation after a far too lengthy hiatus (He's had damn near as many health issues as yours truly, so I can sympathize!).

Playoff linkage: Mysterious Mayhew, Tombstone and Madden simulations
It's interesting to note Lions' GM Martin Mayhew is getting no props from the national media for his rebuilding job. The Lions are the Phoenix of the NFL, yet no one is talking about the man behind the resurrection. ESPN's Kevin Seifert gives his take on the mystery man pulling the strings from behind the Honolulu blue and silver curtain:
A week dominated by front office news...

The oddsmakers have spoken...and it's a mixed message when it comes to the Lions
The NFL is a bettor's dream. Why else would it be the most popular of the 4 major US sports?
But what got me to thinking about betting and the Lions' playoff chances in the eyes of those who make money on games were the following odds, as seen in today's Freep.
Here are the full odds from Cantor Gaming:Packers are favorite 9-5Patriots 7-2Saints: 9-2Ravens: 6-1Steelers 10...

Playoff talk: Lions Wild Card game preview at This Given Sunday
The reason TWFE has been quiet over the last day or so is due to my being busy writing for other sites.
One, keep an eye out for the return of the long on hiatus Lions Congregation on Friday! Joshua, aka DetFan1979 of Roar of the Lions, was giving me a run for the title of "Lions blogger with the most severe health issues." But he's feeling much better, and bringing back the...

Detroit Lions @ Green Bay Packers: 4th quarter running diary
Lions will start from their 38. NEED MOAR POINTZ.
Crossing pattern to Megatron, runs over a couple of Packers, out of bounds at the Packers' 38! Man amongst boys. He's over 200 yards on the day...Stafford now over 400.
3rd and 3 from the 31...UGH, Burlson falls on the cut again. Someone get Burleson some longer spikes, please?
Lions going for it...Pass to Pettigrew...

Detroit Lions @ Green Bay Packers: 3rd quarter running diary
Matt Flynn is chewing up the Lions secondary to the tune of 19-29-280-3 TD-1 INT-117.0 rating.
Stafford wasn't too shabby either, 16-29-199-2 TD-0 INT-99.0 rating. But he's also misfired on what should have been a pair of TD passes, and had another denied thanks to a bad call.
Time for the Lions to play over the bad calls. But a little help couldn't hurt.
Mind tossing...
