Jeter moving down in lineup “not even an option”

Via Marc Carig, if the Yanks decide to move Derek Jeter down in the lineup it won’t be out of the top three spots. Kevin Long said that Jeet moving out of the upper third of the batting order is, as the headline suggests, “not even an option.” I wonder if that would be the case if his name wasn’t Derek Jeter. Let’s cut right to the chase here. Gardner...

PERFECT GAME!!

OK, it wasn’t an official perfect game but AJ Burnett tossed three perfect innings. He threw 45 pitches with 30 going for strikes as the Yanks bested the Phightin’ Phils 7-1 in a split squad game this afternoon. He got five ground outs, three fly balls and a K. Joba and Pedro Feliciano added a perfect inning each before Hector Noesi gave up three hits, including a solo homer...

Colon, ManBan steal the show

The Yanks fell to the Red Sox, 5-3, tonight, but the story of the game was the pitching. Bartolo Colon was impressive as hell, as he threw 42 pitches with 35 going for strikes. He maxed out at 93 mph and was consistently in the 89-to-low-90s range. The 37-year-old tossed three scoreless innings, fanned five and allowed two hits. I know it’s early in Spring Training, but this fatso...

Down goes Cervelli

The Yanks announced today that Francisco Cervelli has a fractured bone in his left foot and will be in a boot for a least four weeks. Cervelli, a Yanks Go Yard favorite, injured the foot when he fouled a ball off it in Wednesday’s game; he stayed in but was eventually lifted an inning later. Odds are he will miss about a month and a half with the injury. This doesn’t change things...

What rivalry?

Very touching story in the Wall Street Journal today about how the Yankees players put aside their hatred of the Red Sox to help out Boston’s first base coach Ron Johnson this past September. Johnson, who was Kevin Long’s minor-league manager in the mid-90s, was struck by tragedy a month earlier when his daughter was riding a horse and was hit by a car. Bridget needed to have...

Good AJ makes cameo + notes

AJ Burnett threw 21 pitches — 15 for strikes and no back-to-back balls — in today’s 6-5 win over the Astros. He went two scoreless innings and gave up a pair of hits with one strikeout. Most importantly, he built up some confidence. AJ: You have to have confidence in yourself and believe no matter what. Taking it pitch by pitch and not questioning every little thing you do...

Vote for the East as the best AL division

Last month, the good folks over at Jays Journal, Birds Watcher, BoSox Injection and Rays Colored Glasses and I voted and constructed an All-Star team with players from the AL East. Now that our roster is finalized, the team is facing off against the All-Star teams from the AL Central and AL West. I need you, loyal reader(s?), to go to Call to the Pen and vote for the AL East team...

Baseball is back!!!!

The Yanks dropped their Spring Training opener to the Phils, 5-4, this afternoon…but who cares? BASEBALL IS BACK!!! Granted the starters only played about four innings and it was painful to watch at times, but baseball is baseball. Things I took away from the game: The good: The pitching. Bartolo Colon was solid in his first start, much better than I expected. The Yanks&...

Carpenter wouldn’t block trade

Although Ken Rosenthal says that the chances of a trade are slim, Chris Carpenter, 36 in April, said he wouldn’t block a move if the Cardinals tried to get rid of him. It’s not up to me. If the Cardinals wanted to trade me, obviously I would go. There’s no question about that. I’m not going to hold back or veto or do anything like that if they’re looking to move me. St...

Why don’t you have a seat right there, Alex

Today was picture day at Steinbrenner Field, and a lot of them didn’t come out too flattering. One of A-Rod’s came out looking like something out of To Catch a Predator: "Eight-year-olds, dude" This one from Tex wasn’t great either. He looks like he just hopped off the short bus: "Have you seen my baseball?" The less said about Joba’s...

Mo throws his first bullpen

The Great Mariano threw his first bullpen session of the spring today, tossing about 30 pitches while focusing on location. It doesn’t have to be hard. Just find the location, and once you do that, start working on adding more speed to the ball. I did that and it was good today. Mo will keep throwing bullpens for a while, then throw a live bullpen session or two prior to appearing...

Hank fails in attempt to cover his tracks

After Derek Jeter played it cool and laughed off Hank Steinbrenner’s “too busy building mansions” insult from Monday, Hank tried to backtrack and say it was simply a euphemism. It was a euphemism, that’s all it was. It was a generalization, a euphemism. Bad choice of a euphemism, but it was a euphemism. That’s all it was. The lesser Steinbrenner child didn’t back off...

Every time Hank speaks an angel dies

Whoever is responsible for keeping Hank Steinbrenner in his cage really screwed the pooch today. Let’s get right to it. Hank: I think, maybe, they celebrated too much last year. Some of the players, too busy building mansions and doing other things and not concentrating on winning. I have no problem saying that. In case you haven’t heard, Jeter’s mansion was finished...

Kevin Millwood has a lot of balls

Kevin Millwood rejected the Yankees’ offer for a non-guarenteed minor league deal today. The 36-year-old Millwood wants a guaranteed major league deal, as opposed to having to earn the fourth or fifth spot in the rotation. However, the Yanks refuse to give him guaranteed money and want him to accept a deal similar to what Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon took this offseason. As...

Notes from Friday

Some Spring Training notes from today: Freddy Garcia says he can live at 88-89 mph but there are days when the heat is 83-84 mph. He also came through with some stellar quotes: In the past, I don’t really concentrate in Spring Training games, but this year I have to be different. I don’t worry about anybody else. I have to worry about myself. If I don’t worry...

He still doesn’t look right in Dodger blue

There was a pretty cool article about Don Mattingly on the New York Times’ website today, and you know I’ll take any chance I get to post about Hitman. In it, Karen Crouse talks about the McCourt’s divorce, the Dodgers’ offseason acquisitions, Mattingly’s ability to manage and his haters, Ronald Belisario’s failure to get a visa, the infamous haircut episode with Stump...

On the fourth day He arrived

Mariano Rivera arrived in Tampa last night and began his usual Spring Training routine this morning. He’s not sure when he’ll begin throwing off a mound but “it won’t be any time soon.” I can’t say I’m pissed off that He arrived late because He’s the greatest of all time and knows His body better than anyone. Let Him do His thing. Plus...

Pinstripes may not be as slimming as once thought

As reported earlier, Joba Chamberlain arrived at Spring Training looking heavier. He claims that he’s in the best shape that he’s been in in a couple of years, which may very well be true as reporters have said he looks bigger only in the chest and shoulders, but, even if that’s not the case, does it matter? There have been plenty of pitchers who were/are overweight and still...

The first casualty…

The Yanks released their first player this spring, as lefty reliever Neal Cotts bit the dust. Cashman says the decision came based on Cotts’ physical from Monday and had nothing to do with performance. Also from that article: Joba’s fat, but there’s “no beer gut.” I wouldn’t expect there to be a beer gut, Joba’s a Crown Royal man. In other news from Spring Training...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year

Happy Valentine’s Day Pitchers and Catchers Day everybody!! The offseason is officially over and we can start talking baseball. As Joe Girardi did his annual press conference upon arriving at Spring Training, he answered the usual banal questions. One that was interesting though was about Jeter and his place in the lineup: We signed (Jeter) to be our shortstop, and we signed him...

Yanks announce non-roster invites

Via LoHud, the Yanks released the names of their Spring Training non-roster invitees. The total number of players scheduled to report is 67. In addition to the 40-man roster and the guys they gave minor league deals to earlier this offseason, these prospects will be at camp: Manuel Banuelos, LHP, 19 Jesus Montero, C, 21 Austin Romine, C, 22 Daniel Brewer, OF, 23 Jose Gil, C, 24...

Boras claims two more Yankees

According to Joel Sherman, Swish Dog is set to hire Scott Boras as his agent. He is ditching long-time agent Joe Bick for Scotty. This makes the second Yankee that has inked with Boras in the past week, as RBInson Cano did the same thing last Saturday. Swisher will get $9.1 million this year and the Yanks have a club option for 2012 at $10.25 million with a $1 million buyout. Barring...

Some more Super Bowl pics

A-Rod wasn’t just at the Super Bowl getting fed popcorn by Cameron Diaz, he was also mingling with other famous people at a CIROC-hosted event at Fair Park Complex in Dallas. According to my spies, A-Rod and Diaz were very energetic and spent the night dancing, laughing, having fun and not at all trying to hide their feelings towards one another.  My source said they were...

Michael Kay tequila — it makes your ego bigger

Michael Kay, the “voice of the Yankees,” was honored during Super Bowl week with a personalized Jose Cuervo Platino box. He received the gift in honor of his engagement to Jodi Applegate. THAT IS ONE OF THE GREATEST TEQUILAS YOU WILL EVER SEE!!!

I thought centaurs ate grass

In case you missed it, here’s the image of A-Rod and Cameron Diaz from the first quarter of yesterday’s game: h/t to Shana Bartels for the gif Only A-Rod… More importantly, one week from today pitchers and catchers will be reporting to Legends Field Steinbrenner Field in Tampa for the start of Spring Training. In other words: the offseason is almost over!!!!
