Olympic Men's Tennis

James Blake, our very own Yardbarker!, is into the Olympic quarterfinals. Next up for JB: Roger Federer.

Paul Henri-Mathieu will play Fernando Gonzalez for the rights to the winner of Blake vs. Federer.

On the bottom half of the draw, Gael Monfils will face off against Novak Djokovic. THIS could be a very, very entertaining match, folks, and I hope it goes three sets. The last quarter is Melzer vs. Nadal. Groan.

My dream scenario: Blake d. Federer for the first time at this event, a la Jennifer Capriati back in the day when she got the best of Steffi Graf on the Barcelona clay. Blake's game matches up very well against Mathieu and Gonzo, both, so he makes the final. JB finds the game the gave him a 2-0 career edge vs. Nadal and wins the gold medal...

Thanx Been. This is Star 80. Im with you. Thanx 4 the info.. Because tryin 2 watch the tennis on T.V.. is next to playing the Mega in NY.. Very disappointed tha, but Im with you all the way.. Blake has it in him for the Gold. If he can just veiw his game in his mind and stay calm (play his game) Its Gold all tha way Baby..Fire it up one more time..Blake!!.. Bring home the GOLD. GO USA.. GO Hollywood in WaterTown, NYC

This is so cool reading James' blogs from Beijing. I went to the Indianapolis Open Series a few weeks ago and bought my JBlock t-shirt. I wore it to the gym tonight and didn't realize he was playing the 3rd round. Definitely must have been my good karma sent his way...I am also disappointed with NBC's coverage of tennis but the Olympics are awesome so far. Go USA!

Watched James BEAT Federer on computer, then on tv, now ready to watch the replay. Both these guys have alot of class. USA USA USA James is looking good and ready for GOLD.

The men's semifinals are set:

James Blake vs. Fernando Gonzalez
Novak Djokovic vs. Rafael Nadal

Gonzalez leads the head-to-head series vs. Blake 5-3, but several of their most recent matches have gone the full distance. Gonzalez has won two titles this year, but has struggled on hardcourt. Blake has played himself into form and has recently defeated two hot hardcourt players in Giles Simon and Dmitry Tursunov. Gonzo's game has been much more erratic: he lost to Acasuso in Canada, and to Berdych in Cincy.

If Blake can stand up to Gonzo's pace and serve well, our Yardbarking tennis pro will be into the Olympic final.

As for Djokovic vs. Nadal, wow. Wow wow wow wow wow. This should also be a great match, and it's ridiculous to think one of these two will have to play for a bronze medal!

Blake and Gonzo are very similar - super talented whose A game can beat anybody, but whose C game is absolutely terrible and shows up way too often. I always said Blake can pull this off if he is consistent - nobody can handle a consistent dose of his best.
