Reign of Federer over? Not so fast...

If I have to hear one more "expert" declare that Roger Federer has lost his spot atop the tennis world, I am going to lose it. Let's put his 2008 season into perspective for a moment. The guy has lost 2 matches. Two. And it's not like he has lost to a couple of nobodies. Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are two of the game's top young talents. Now add the fact that, according to ESPN, Federer was sick with mono during the Aussie Open, and you've got some incredible overreactions from the tennis world.

Maybe people want to believe that Federer's reign is over just because they've grown tired of his dominance. Maybe Roger has set the bar so high for himself that even two losses represent a monumental collapse. Let's just wait until Federer is fully healthy and comfortable again on the court before we suggest the rest of the tennis world has caught up to him.

My thoughts exactly. If the "losing streak" continues well into the season, then we'll talk. I think he's in for a challenging year and that he won't be nearly as dominant--but he definitely isn't falling apart.

Definitely hard to maintain that level of play as long as he has. I don't think he's done by a longshot, but can he continue or does he even want to continue to dominate? That's the question He's done everything there is to do in the sport and he has plenty of money.

He and Tiger are the dominant figures of there respective sports. Tiger went down, Tiger came back. 2 matches is certainly nothing to worry about. It's not like someone turns off a light switch to his skills on the court

He has definitely done well, and will continue to for the rest of his career

Folks have to say shit - even if its stupid. Unfortunately there are many people waiting with baited breath for him to falter so they can say they wrote about it/said it first. I guess its part of being #1 is dealing with folks who secretly want to see you collapse. Bottom line... Roger is Ze Man.

If he doesn't win Wimbledon, will you feel the same way?

Absolutely. How many grand Slams does he have? I can appreciate the overall body of work. No one can take that away. Tiger lost over the weekend. Doesn't mean he's stil not the greatest.

People aren't saying that he wasn't as great as he was - they are saying that his run of greatness has ended. They are two completely different things.

In that case, how the heck does ANYONE know that? Tiger went through a couple slumps as he revamped his swing and, if I remember correctly, lots of folks were all too happy to say his reign had ended - he was on the way down. Very wrong. So, I'm not much for prognostication. But again, if he doesn't win Wimbledon, I will still feel the same way. Only time will tell.
