American Mallory Burdette is through to the third round of the U.S. Open in her Grand Slam debut.
The 252nd-ranked Stanford All-American beat Lucie Hradecka 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday. The 21-year-old from Georgia was this year's NCAA singles runner-up to teammate Nicole Gibbs.
Burdette got in on a wild card as the American woman who earned the most points on the USTA Pro Circuit this summer. Last month, she won her first WTA match at the Stanford tournament.
The 69th-ranked Hradecka is the highest-ranked opponent Burdette has defeated. The Czech doubles specialist beat 27th-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues in the first round. Hradecka has never reached the third round at a Grand Slam event.
Burdette saved all six break points she faced Wednesday. She had 21 winners to 13 for Hradecka.
