Grand Slam ironman David Ferrer advanced to the second round at the Australian Open with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win Tuesday over Rui Machada of Portugal.
The fifth-seeded Ferrer is making his 10th straight appearance at the Australian Open and has played in 37 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments since his first major at Melbourne Park in January 2003.
His best Grand Slam finishes have been two semifinals - last year here and at the 2007 U.S. Open.
On Monday, Ferrer converted seven of his nine break-point opportunities.
