‘I tell myself each match could be my last,’ says a reflective Andy Murray after Queens win

Andy Murray made a triumphant return to tennis at the Queens Championship and said after he is just trying to make the most of every match.

Murray was hit with the most serious of injuries when he was world number one which required major hip surgery and many thought it would be end of his career.

However, determined to prove his doubters wrong, Murray returned, winning a doubles and a singles tournament before the coronavirus and a serious of bad luck stopped him in his tracks.

Firstly a positive COVID test prevented him from competing in the Australian Open and then a freak groin injury stopped him the night before the Miami Open.

Now the 34-year-old, three-time Grand Slam Champion, has won his first match back on grass for three years against Frenchman Benoit Paire and said afterwards he is enjoying every minute.

“I just wanted to go out there and enjoy it and just be myself. I did that. I enjoyed it. I get another opportunity tomorrow,” said Murray who will now face number one seed Matteo Berrettini in the next round.

“I’m always sort of telling myself – and maybe it’s not the best mindset – but each match could be my last one, you know, that I play now.

“I want to make the most of every match that I play and each tournament that I get the chance to compete in.”

Murray had got emotional at the end of the match while being interviewed on court. When asked what it feels like to compete again, he replied, “I love playing tennis” before tearing up and apologising.
