I'm upset that I didn't see the tennis match on Saturday, which was on rain delay so often in Flushing Meadows, NY, that I saw (between sleep and wake) USC true freshman quarterback Matt Barkley and company come from behind and beat Ohio State instead that night on ABC. Normally, I'd be quick to defend Serena, but—like a male predecessor who won a lot but whined a lot, too (John McEnroe, natch)—the end result shown on sports highlights on YouTube and ESPN disgusted me, as she lost in a bizarre, 2009 US Open women's semifinal match, 4-6, 5-7, to the comeback queen from Belgium, Kim Clijsters. As a friend told me not too long ago, you can take the girl outta Compton, but you can't take Compton outta the girl. It's not an excuse, and it's definitely an embarrassment for the sport. For Serena. For Venus. For Oracene and Richard. For Billie Jean King, et al. Who knows if Serena would've beaten C...
