US Open champion Andy Murray won his first-round match at the Australian Open, beating Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 on Tuesday.
Murray was dominant throughout his Rod Laver Arena match, his first at a major since beating Novak Djokovic in the US Open final last year, ending a 76-year drought by a British man in Grand Slam singles.
The third-seeded Murray is in the same half of the draw as Roger Federer, and the two could meet in the semifinals.
Any Murray-Djokovic encounter at Melbourne Park - which would be a repeat of last year's title match won by Djokovic - could only be for the championship here on Jan 27.
French Open finalist Sara Errani has lost her first-round match 6-4, 6-4 to Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.
The seventh-seeded Errani had her best result in 21 Grand Slam tournaments when she lost in the final of last year's French to Maria Sharapova.
The 25-year-old Italian had one of her best years on the tour in 2012, winning four events and improving her ranking from 45 at the end of 2011 to sixth at the end of last year.
