New Haven, CT—American Sam Querrey and Spaniard Fernando Verdasco poured in double duty today at the Pilot Penn Tennis event, advancing to their fifth and first finals of the year respectively. After a rain-out on Friday which saw the postponement of both semifinal matches, Querrey promptly took to the indoors courts of the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center to dismiss Argentine Jose Acasuso 6-3, 6-4 in 63 minutes.
Persistent rain meant that tournament officials were not taking any chances with the order of play on Saturday and sanctioned the semifinals to be played indoors.
"I think it was a little slower indoors," Querrey said. "Kind of cold in there, so the balls were a little dead."
Querrey used his monster serve to hit 11 aces, win 94 percent of his first serve points and break his opponents serve on two occasions. Acasuso failed to convert on his only break-point chance in the first set and only managed to win 76 percent of his first serve point...
